First time Linux Mint user and fist time poster to this forum. Need to install a Linux distro on my family member's HP Mini 1000, an older netbook with minimal hardware (1 GB memory stick, Intel Atom N270 processor, 80 GB ATA HDD, and it runs XP SP3. . I advised her to uninstall XP and buy Windows 7, but she doesn't want to spend the $93. So ...

I have been testing different Linux distros from flash drive on my HP Probook 4530S laptop. Have tried Ubuntu 14x and now Mint, which I prefer. Ubuntu wouldn't boot to desktop on the netbook after choosing "Use without installing." Mint runs OK on it, but I can't configure the wireless connection. I suspect that either the network hardware isn't compatible or I am missing something when trying to manually configure the settings. I read some info from the Mint web site about this issue, but not sure about whether the Mini's wireless card is compatible: Broadcom 802.11b/g WLAN. Does updating Windows drivers help with this?

I am looking for a live linux distro that is able to recognize more hardware by "default" without installation. For example, when I borrow a laptop/netbook, I want to be able to boot the live linux distro and be able to have wireless access to internet (at least most of the time).

I know how to get the wireless working if I have internet access to begin with, but sometimes I do not have a wired connection or am not allowed to install stuff.

I would like to try many live distros on different laptops, but it would be hard to convince other people to give me their laptops to do that; so I would really appreciate your help.

I read lots of post abot exactlly that topic, but none of that worked for me.

I just built a computer and decided to give ubuntu a shot. It's a desktop, and hooking it up to Ethernet is a tad bit inconvenient as things stand, so I'm really reeling to figure out how to get this Netgear adapter to work. It's an AC1200, got it at Best Buy, and it comes with a CD with drivers for Windows. I don't seem to be able to install it.

This is my first post here and my first computer that I built, so I really have no clue if I've messed up somewhere down the line. That being said, I'd really appreciate if someone could help me with this one.

It looks like my kernel version is 3.13.0-32-generic and my Ubuntu version is 14.04.1, if that's important. I haven't messed with the settings at all yet, so pretend you're talking to a monkey that just installed Ubuntu with no idea what he's doing.

Intel Celeron 420 1.6 GHz
2GB DDR2 memory
80GB HD

I believe he was previously with Windows 7 installed (but the original factory is Vista Starter)

I used the KillDisk for formatting, and overwrite zeros, and apparently it was all OK.

I tried to add some parameters both in Mageia as The Elemetary and ubuntu (after pressing F6), as
acpi = off noapic nolapic nodma PNPBIOS nomodeset irqpoll xdriver = vesa resolution = 1024x768 and nothing, changed nothing

In Mageia, when I click install linux kernel appears the load popup and always goes to 100%, but then just goes black screen passes 10, 20 minutes and not change anything

I am a long time Windows user. When XP got old I was like everyone else. Left with what to do. I purchased copies of Win 7 & got those working ok. I am just so tired of Microsoft products. So I took some time & I have read and researched several articles about Linux, Ubuntu, Zorin et al. Earlier this week I loaded a new Zorin OS9 from a DVD into a HP Compaq nx9420. The install worked flawlessly. Damn it is such an easy product to use. Bravo! I have an issue that has been experienced by many newbies. I found several answers to this same question. I read through several replies and went into terminal and typed in the directions. I am still stumped. I need some assistance. I hope someone has the time. I cannot connect to the internet through wireless.

The laptop has a Intel PRO Wireless 3945ABG Wireless network card.

Im trying to break free from windows. just got puppy 4.3.1 and know nothing about linux . after trying a full install it will not reboot without cd in the drive, just says error loading operating system.My system has more than required amount of ram and almost 40 gig hd. have only 1 partition formated to ext2. could not figure how to use grub.

ps. also canot connect to wireless router

Given: Wireless card recognized by laptop and executable driver file sitting waiting for installation.

Question:When I click on the .exe file (driver file) it opens and installs somewhere that I can't find, even with the Tools - Find Files/Folders option using the *.inf file format as a search handle.
How do I control where this file opens to? If I could control where it opens to, I could then find it to install it for use.
