Help With Puppy Linux

Hi guys,

I'm new to this forum and linux too.
I thought of installing a lightweight distro of linux and did some research on the net where I found people recommending Puppy Linux. Plus it is (theoretically speaking) possible to run it from a USB (flash) drive which I decided to try out but it seems like it's not that simple a task as a lot of people (all over the internet) say it is.

What I tried so far is this: installing it into a thumb drive using unetbootin follwing a youtube tutorial (which basically showed how to download an iso of puppy, use unetbootin to make the thumbdrive bootable and install puppy on it). It didn't work. The USB wasn't recognized as a bootable device. I know for sure it can be booted from it since I tried ubuntu from the same USB and the same Laptop (which is able to boot from USB).

I thought that something with the Flash Drive not OK so I tried to use a windows installer to install puppy like other windows programms but this didn't work either. This time Puppy was recognized because there was an option to boot either Puppy or Windows 7 but when I chose to boot from Puppy nothing happens just a screen flash, some letters in the top left corner saying something like NTSC or NTSF (I can't read it properly because it goes away too fast) then after the screen flash the whole thing again (boot from win 7 or Puppy I choose Puppy again the flash... basically a loop).

Any ideas what I'm doing wron or what the problem is?

Thank You for any replies.

Fastest Linux To Boot – Only Need To Run VLC?

I have an old Pentium 3 all in one computer. This computer will have one dedicated use, which is to watch video streamed over the network from a Slingbox type device. My only requirement is that I can run VLC to play the MPEG2-TS stream. I also want VLC to automatically paly and audio CD when it is placed in the CD drive. Therefore I really don’t require many codecs. My only other requirement is that I will need to load drivers for a wireless remote or something so that I can control VLC.
At the moment the PC does the above with windows XP, but it takes far too long to load. As I only want the computer to perform this one task, what Linux distro would people suggest for the quickest boot? I have so far tried puppy but it still takes a while to load. Does anyone have any suggestions where to go from here?
I am very new to Linux so will need something which is not too hard to setup.

How To Configure GRUB2 To Give Me The Multi Boot Option

PXE Won't Boot

Hello.

I don't know if this forum is the correct one to ask about this problem. Feel free to move it to another forum.

I am running PelicanHPC, a Debian-live based clustering distro.
It sets up a DHCP server, and offer PXE boot to other machines in a network.
I have switch off the DHCP server in my router.

Problem is that when I boot from this computer through the network, it displays a message for a split of a second: Succeed download. I guess that it is downloading the NBP correctly. But then, it's just returning to BIOS and/or booting my OS normally.

The other computer is offering a non-EFI image, and this computer boots: UEFI: PXE IPv4. Maybe there is a mismatch, but I have no idea on how to fix this.

What can I do to boot it correctly?

If you need more information, just ask me about it.

Thank you

Is A DHCP Router A Network Server?

I have several computers connected to a D-Link DIR605L router, two with ethernet cables and two through wifi. The Windows XP computer can see itself and nobody else. The Ubuntu (trusty) desktop and Ubuntu (lucid) netbook computers see nobody (unable to retrieve file list from server) and the Windows Vista computer only sees itself. Clearly, I have failed to configure something or a set of somethings.
Do I have to have one of the computers always on, acting as some kind of file server or can the router do this job? This is a new router. My old one (whose power supply went phut) connected everybody without arguing about it and we could share files around, even with a mix of OSs.
Since this is a local network only, I have no firewalls enabled, as far as I know ...
All of the network set-up posts I've found rabbit on about how to get your internet connection working through your router, which is not an option for me. I have dial-up working on the XP computer and a mobile wireless USB dongle for internet access on the trusty desktop.
I've installed samba and a few other packages, but so far, none of them have solved my problem. Can someone please tell me where to start and which tutorials to read? If I have to set up a computer as a file server, I guess it will have to be the XP thing, as it's the only one that is always running, but I'd like to avoid that, if possible, as I speak XP worse than I speak Ubuntu.
BTW, D-Link are no help at all, two hours on the 'phone and they were still trying to get me to connect to an ADSL service I don't have ...

Ubuntu Will Not Dual Boot Beside Windows 7--error Codes

I have windows 7 laptop, Dell. I downloaded the newest edition of Ubuntu (Twice)to see if it would install and dual boot beside Windows 7. Unsucessful on several attempts. Once I reboot the computer it will give ma a choice of 7 or Ubuntu. I decide on Ubuntu it starts to boot into Ubuntu than a black screen with all types of Kernel error codes that i'm unfamilur with. one is---(1.292618) kernel panic-not syncing: no working init found.

Try passing init option to Kernel (see Linux Documentation/init.txt for guidance..

I am not sure what all this means any help would be appreactiated...

How To Start Legacy-OS-2 From USB? Which Boot Codes In Syslinux?

Hello,

I loaded the legacy OS 2 files from the ISO (vmlinuz, initrd.gz and pup_214.sfs) into a CF card (on an IDE adapter in my old PC). This CF card can be mounted on an USB adapter later for booting diverse PCs.

It boots..
and stop later with an error.
... looking for Puppy in .. (diverse devices) DONE
... looking for pup_save.2fs in .. (diverse devices) DONE
... (STOP TO PROMPT) cannot find Puppy in idehd.

Question: what is the reason of stop? should I perhaps use a specific boot code?

my syslinux.cfg has
label puppy
kernel vmlinuz
append initrd=initrd.gz PMEDIA=usbflash

My Computer No Longer Boots Live Disks

A week ago, I realized that I could not boot live disks. At first, I thought that it was the optical drive not writing the disks correctly, but when I tried two live disks that I've used many times before nothing happened with those either.

I have CD/DVD drive listed first in my BIOS' boot order and I even tried selecting the optical drive in the menu when the computer started and it still does not boot a disk. Thankfully, my somewhat old hard drives are still chugging along but I need to be able to use a live disk, in case one or both die on me.

My question is, how can I know for sure what the problem is? Is there a way to test the optical drive (Samsung Super Writemaster - which has a bad rep)? Could it be my motherboard. It was bought new 2 years ago, and there are no other issues with it. Also, I have been able to create playable DVDs on my computer with the Optical drive that work perfectly on my Bluray player, yet I cannot play the movies or open a data disk in file manager on my computer. What does that mean?

I want to know that it's worth it to buy another burner, before shelling out the money when I'm already practically broke from Christmas gift purchases. Any suggestions on how to test the optical drive would be appreciated.

Asus Eee PC Netbook - Booting From A USB Stick

Hi all. I'm trying to set up a netbook with Ubuntu for my computer-challenged Mother. I downloaded the image file to the download section of the new netbook, created a USB stick to boot from and then restarted the computer, pressing F2 in order to change the boot order. Using the "+" key I was able to put [Removable Dev.] on top: "1st Boot Device", but, and here's the thing, it is disabled: "A devince enclosed in the parenthesis has been disab led in the corresponding type menu." I do not understand this, nor do I know what to do. Help please....
