Misbehaving 'echo' Command On Cygwin

Hi,

I've used unix before, but have just started to play with CYGWIN (1.1.3) on windows XP (32 bit). I'm having trouble getting 'echo' to behave as I would expect.

I've created a script called runstuff which contains these lines....
Code:
#!/bin/bash
# This line works as expected....
echo "the user is <$USER> and the hostname is <$HOSTNAME>"
MYVAR1=bill
MYVAR2=fred
# This lines doesn't.....
echo "my first variable is<$MYVAR1> and my second is <$MYVAR2>"

The output I get is this...
Quote:
$ runstuff
the user is <Mike> and the hostname is <MikesLaptop>
> and my second is <fredl

In the first echo statement it is just echoing a couple of external variables - this works as expected. In the 2nd echo example the two variables are internal, but the displayed output isn't what I'd expect, my guess is that the first part of the output "my first variable is <bill" has somehow been overwritten by the remainder of the string. Or am I missing something?

I have tried exporting the variables, and I've experimented with wrapping them in quotes, but the results are always the same.

Any help gratefully received.

String Concatenation In UNIX / Shell Script

Hi,

I am new to UNIX - i wrote this below script based on the requirement. But i am stuck at the concatenation (at the second last step of the code)

The below code is working fine till the concatenation(second last step) - I need to concatenate Hello to the "physId" e.g. - The filename is UM123456789.20150503 - i am extracting M123456789 and i need to append "HELO" to it at the end. But as per the below script - when i am using the concatenation, it is overwriting the M123456789 and the output thus becomes HELO456789. I am trying to get the output as - M123456789HELO - where am i going wrong?

on the terminal i checked - echo $0 and it gave -> /bin/sh. Hence i wrote the below code.

#!bin/sh
absolutePath=/abc/data/abc_unix/stg/decrypt/*.*
filepath=$(echo ${absolutePath%.*})
echo "$filepath"
filenameext=$(echo ${filepath#/abc*decrypt/})
echo "$filenameext"
file=$(echo ${filenameext#.*})
echo "$file"
extract_physId=$(echo ${file:1:9})
physId=$(echo ${extract_physId})
echo "$physId"
key="$physId"HELO
echo "$key"

Check Empty Variable Without Comments

Hello,

They gave me this:
Code:
#!/bin/bash

# Write error message on stderr and die
function die() {
  echo "$@" >&2
  exit 1
}

# Load var from properties files
function load() {
  for propertie in "$@" ; do
    [[ -f "${propertie}" ]] || die "load() : \"${propertie}\" don't exist !"
    while read ; do
echo "${REPLY%=*}"
echo "${REPLY#*=}"
      [[ -n "${REPLY%%=*}" && -z "${REPLY#*=}" ]] || die "load() : Variable \"${REPLY%%=*}\" is empty!"
      eval "${REPLY%%=*}"=\'"${REPLY#*=}"\'
    done < "${propertie}"
  done
}

load "manage_srcds.conf"
echo "SRCDS_TICKRATE=$SRCDS_TICKRATE"
echo "SRCDS_SCREEN=$SRCDS_SCREEN"
echo "SRCDS_SRCDS_GAME_NAME=$SRCDS_GAME_NAME"
echo "SRCDS_MAXPLAYERS=$SRCDS_MAXPLAYERS"

but, return:
Quote:
###################################################
###################################################
load() : Variable "###################################################" is empty!

cat manage_srcds.conf

I just wish that there was no empty variable excluding those who do not have integer.

Help Modifying Text With User Input

Hello,

I apologize in advance for my limited UNIX scripting knowledge. I am new to it and really want to learn.

I am trying to write a bash script that updates a config file based on user input.

What is the best method for accomplishing this? I need it to prompt the user for two variables, find the location in the config file, and insert new text with the two variables.

I was thinking I could use sed to find the text in the config file where the new text must be inserted before and replace it with the new text, two variables, and same ending text as before. Example:

echo "1st variable?"
read variable1

echo "2nd variable?"
read variable2

sed -e "s|<the spot in the config file that needs new config>|sometext...$variable2_somemoretext...$variable1\n<the spot in the config file that needs new config>|g" config > config2

This works except variable2 is not inserted into the replace string, only variable1 is. This is the result in config2:

sometext..._somemoretext...$variable1
<the spot in the config file that needs new config>

If anyone can tell me why variable2 isn't working in the sed replace string, or if there's a much better way for accomplishing what I'm after, I'd appreciate any help I can get.

Help With 'CASE'

Hi guys,

i'm beginner with Unix, I tried my best, but I Really don't know how to finish it .

here's my problem : I have to do something like Student system - student's name | subjects | mark |credits.

after starting script it will ask you for Student's name, then which subject, then the mark will appear.

It's a homework, and I have my own idea how to solve it, but cannot finish it, i don't want complete solution, just a help!

Code:
#!/bin/bash
echo "Students name"
echo -n "Enter student's name: "
read name
echo
case $name in
Example1|Math) echo "C" ;;
Example2|Programming) echo "D" ;;
Example3|WWW) echo "A" ;;
Example4|Economie) echo "-" ;;
esac

I don't now how to bring together case with second things which is "enter subject".

I appreciate any help

Better Way Of Writing This Command Of Leaving Multiple Blank Lines

Hi All..

I need to give four lines of gap(Freespace) between two command outputs.

what i did was below

Code:
echo "" >>$LOG_DIR/$LOG_NAME
echo "" >>$LOG_DIR/$LOG_NAME
echo "" >>$LOG_DIR/$LOG_NAME
echo "" >>$LOG_DIR/$LOG_NAME
print "***************** LEVEL 2: Truncating  Tables: Success:  tables Truncated ***********************" >> $LOG/$LOG_NAME
echo "" >>$LOG_DIR/$LOG_NAME
echo "" >>$LOG_DIR/$LOG_NAME
echo "" >>$LOG_DIR/$LOG_NAME
echo "" >>$LOG_DIR/$LOG_NAME
# Run the load scripts.
echo "***************** LEVEL 3: Loading Dupe Check Tables: Success: Dupe Check tables Loaded***********************" >> $LOG/$LOG_NAME

Is there any better way of writing this command to leave multiple lines between two commands.

Please advise...

Zenity Radiolist Parameters In Variables

Note: Ubuntu 14 latest release

I am a highly experienced unix user with many years of experience. However, I retired 13 years ago so I can't remember some simple things so forgive me for posting here.

I am trying to use the "zenity --list --radiolist" command. Now this requires that the list of items be last and be of the form FALSE <item name> as in FALSE "Choice 1" FALSE "Choice 2" That's easy without variables. It would be zenity --list --radiolist [other options here] FALSE "Choice 1" FALSE "Choice 2 Works fine.

But what I have is a list of choices in an array. Each of these is a string of multiple words and I have tried (nearly?) everything using echo command piped into zenity (supposed to work) to including an array element in the line with all sorts of quotes, single quotes, escaping quotes, etc. I have even included the "FALSE" in the variable so as not to have to generate it. Nothing works. When using the set -x, it shows that the shell has put a single quote around each word which makes each word a separate parameter.

I have searched all sorts of examples of zenity but the requirement for the word "FALSE" between each item while using variables is never shown.

If anyone has a working example of something like this (or any simple alternative:
JTemp[3]="This is a string"
echo "FALSE "${Jtemp[3]} | zenity --list --radiolist --text "Select Topic" --column "Topic" --column "Pick one" which should display a radiobox with one entry, I would appreciate it. I could then expand it to include all the array elements.

I know I am doing something simple wrong. I just can't figure it out.

Note that I am writing this on a windows machine and using a non-internet-connected linux machine for my work so if I typed the command line wrong, it may be a problem here and not on the real machine.

Thanks for any help.

Regular Expression In Expect Script To Prevent Printing To Screen

Hello, I have an expect script where I ssh to a remote host to determine the network configuration and get from the user the network interface card that should be used. From their response, I determine the subnet mask and save the information to a text file that is later transmitted back to my local host. This is all so that I can set up virtual IP aliasing and verify that the physical IP address of the local and remote host are on the same subnet prior to continuing with the setup. I am running the script on Linux, with expect version 5.45.

The code itelf works just fine, but I'm having some issues with how it displays on the screen. As you'll see below in the example, the default system prompt displays, as does the user input command that I'm sending to the shell from the expect script.

Is there a regular expression or something that I can write to prevent the prompt and command that I'm sending from printing to the screen? I know that it should be suppressed if I have an expect command following the Code:
send -s "\nread n_card?'Enter the network interface card number for this server (i.e. eth0): '\r

command, but everything I have tried for strings and regular expressions to expect causes the netstat -rn output to not show up all of a sudden. I'm new to expect, so I'm not really sure why this is happening.

I would really appreciate any help/suggestions. Thanks for your time!

Part of the Script Code:
Code:
expect {
   -re $prompt { ;# Send individual commands and get user input
        set timeout -1

        # Get partner hostname and put in vipsetup.txt file
        send -s "hostname > vipsetup.txt\r"
        expect -re $prompt

        # Display the network routing info for the user and prompt for
        # network interface card number
        send -s "print \"The network routing table for the $ptner server is displayed below:\n\" ; netstat -rn \r"

        expect -re "\r(.*):\r"
        send -s "\nread n_card?'Enter the network interface card number for this server (i.e. eth0): '\r"
        interact "\r" return ;# Wait for user input from read command
        send -- "\r"
        send -s "echo \$n_card >> vipsetup.txt\r"

        # Obtain subnet mask information for partner based on network
        # interface card number being used
        send -s "msk=\$(cat /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-\$n_card | grep NETMASK)\r"
        send -s "msk=\$(echo \${msk#NETMASK=})\r"
        send -s "echo \$msk >> vipsetup.txt\r"
    }
    timeout {
        send_user "Connection to host $hostip timed out."
        exit 6
    }
    eof {
        send_user "Connection to host $hostip failed."
        exit
    }
}

Script Output:

Trap Error And Assign In Bash Script

hi
I try to assign return from a _error_handler_function to a variable
this is just a test( dummy test ) not a really case

#!/bin/bash
logfile="/dev/shm/log.err"
exec 2>$logfile
_err_handler(){
v=$(cat $logfile|grep dummy|wc -l);
rm $logfile
echo $v
}

trap _err_handler ERR

x=$(dummy);
echo "x value is $x "
z=$(notrap)
echo "z value is $z"

expected output :
bash-4.1$ sh test2.sh
x value is 1
z value is 0

what is wrong here and how should I fix?

thanks in advance

Basic Bash Script

Code:
PREFIX=192.168.1
OCTET=1
while [ $OCTET -lt "255" ]; do
    echo -en "Pinging ${PREFIX}.${OCTET}..."
    ping -c1 -w1 ${PREFIX}.${OCTET} > /dev/null 2>&1
    if [ "$?" -eq "0" ]; then
       echo "OK"
    else
       echo "Failed"
    fi
    let OCTET=$OCTET+1
done

My question is, in the penultimate line, why is it OCTET, and not $OCTET, with a dollar before it, meaning, the variable?

What if it were written:
Code:
let $OCTET=$OCTET+1

Like in C++ (I think) or Python or whatever?

Check Status

I am writing a script to check whether a "sysinfo" is installed in a system or not. sysinfo is a tool that gives information about the system. Its is installed in /usr/local/bin. so at CLI when I type sysinfo, it will display output.

#!/bin/bash
sysinfo=`/usr/local/bin/sysinfo`
echo "$sysinfo"
if [ "$?" = 0 ];then
echo "sysinfo installed"
else
echo "Please install sysinfo"
fi

Concept is, I run the command if it is present, it will show output and exit status of command is 0 else it is not installed. But it is not working as expected. Any thoughts , idea, suggestion.
