mysqladmin -u root -p version
this is the command used to get version of MySql database.
similarly how can i get the details of any database installed??
I am in the process of setting up my first VPS to host a website that I have been working on. By profession, I am a programmer, so I know nothing of Linux or web hosting!!
Thanks to lots of help on here this weekend, I finally learned how to access my VPS using SSH. (That only took a day or two to learn!) And my first command-line task was learning how to copy a file to another folder while maintaining the original modified date. (That only took another half-day!)
Whew!
So the next thing that I need to do is set up MySQL on my VPS...
My VPS runs on CentOS 6, and it also comes with cPanel, but since astrogeek and Miati were persistent in explaining why it is better to do things via the command-line versus using a GUI, I figured I would check things out...
My cPanel comes with some "wizard" that supposedly sets up a MySQL database for you, but whenever I see "wizard" I tend to run!
Advanced Support for my web host said that I should definitely use cPanel to create my database and create the users, because if I did it using phpMyAdmin it would supposedly mess things up as cPanel wouldn't recognize things?
(BTW, I requested MySQL Root access this morning, but I do not have Root access to my VPS - by choice for now!)
Questions:
1.) Should I listen to my web host and use the cPanel wizard to create a new MySQL database?
2.) If I decide to bypass cPanel, how exactly would I use my MacBook to talk to my VPS and do MySQL stuff over command-line?
FWIW, I developed my entire database using phpMyAdmin in MAMP on my MacBook. When I created my original database in development, I used phpMyAdmin's GUI. And then for everything else (e.g. create table, indexes, queries, etc.), I hand-wrote the SQL in TextEdit and then ran it in phpMyAdmin.
But I have no clue how to do any of this on my VPS!!
3.) How would I use the command-line to create a new database and set up groups and users for MySQL?
4.) If I did things by command-line, is it true that I would break cPanel?
I have been working on my website for the last 3 years, and it is ready to "go live", but I am discovering that setting up my VPS properly - and with lots of security - and getting things like PHP and MySQL set up is a very daunting task!!!
Sincerely,
Rob
Hi all,
Newbie here. I've done plenty of research before coming to ask for help.
I installed the latest version of Serviio, which has a bug and I'm trying to reinstall an older version. I'm using Ubuntu and manually installed serviio, this sudo apt-get remove doesn't work.
I followed some advice and removed the folder, however when I install the older version, the console comes up with the latest version.
How can I completely remove all trace and history of serviio?
Thanks,
Dave

I'm writing this program for my own edification. I want to write and retrieve from a database. I will start on Linux and probably use MySql. After I get the program working on Linux I would like to be able to use it on a Windows 7 or 8 platform. Here are some sample entries I would like to write to and draw from. Which database would you use? Does MySql work on both Linux and Windows?

Hi everyone!
Having read about the latest LibreOffice version, I felt tempted to try it out. I uninstalled the default version on my Ubuntu machine and downloaded the .deb from the LibreOffice site and installed it. The new office has since worked without any trouble.
A few days later I decided to dump Unity and go back to Gnome. So I installed Ubuntu-Gnome-Desktop.
It was then that I noticed two versions of LibreOffice on the application dash (I think, because there are two sets of icons for each office application- see the attached screenshot).
Did Gnome install its own version of LibreOffice with it? Does it really have one? I don't know.
Whichever icon I use to launch the app, the office however always brings up the latest version. So, there's no problem in terms of application errors. As I thought there's no need to have an extra version of an app and eat up my space, I tried to uninstall through Aptitude, but it doesn't 'remove' LibreOffice.
Any advice, please! Thanks in advance.

HI,
When I first joined this forum I made a fairly long synopsis of who I am and what I wanted to do with Linux. I thought I posted it but now I can not find it anywhere. No doubt I messed up somehow!
I am developing a Java stand alone application that will require some server side Java Servlets to manage the marking, registration, install and deployment phases. I have a spare Windows 7 PC that I have converted to the Debian Linux system successfully...
I currently use LunarPages as my ISP and host to 3 domains. If I use them to host my Server Side processing they use Resin 3.x for the web server and my contract with them provides me with one 'MySQL' database system...
Next on my own server I will install the Resin version that LunarPages requires along with their required version of the Java EE.
I have 3 ways to eventually deploy my Java stand alone application
1. Use LunarPages to host my Server Side Servlet command...
2. Use the Google AppEngine service...
3. Use my own Linux Server for deployment purposes...
This message is an intro and does not have any specific question yet...
Perhaps someone may offer some suggestions for me or critique my objects...

A client asked me to create a Database for his school, to house all the student records etc. This isn't usually what I do as I am doing my Major in Game programing. Now I went with Access or Base but they both will need to be installed on his machine. I tried going with SQLite But it doesn't have a front-end. So in short, I want to devalop A SQL baseed DB with a simple GUI Frontend. Where Should I head now, Or Any books which feature such cases. The database will be initially be offline.
