Hello, y'all with vast Linux knowledge, I've built my own gaming desktop, here are the specs:
1-MOBO Asus M5A78L-M LX Plus
2-AMD Radeon Graphics R9 270, 2GB DDR5 Memory
3-2 Hyper X Memory Cards totalling 16 Gb of RAM
Have installed and runninbg Zorin 9.0 Ultimate (Ubuntu 14.4) - MY PROBLEM, I am unable to downlolad any games especially "Minecraft", "League of Legends" and a host of other games on "Steam". I have Wine Geko (32 bit) 2.1 version installed and have Winetricks as well, when I open it I can install a host of games, however, nothing is installed. This is the last straw for me, I have no clue what to do do being a Newbie and unfortunately the folks at "Zoringroup/helpdesk" have been absolutely useless as well. Thanks.
Hello, so for a good 6 months installing and using Linux on my HP Chromebook 2014 has worked perfectly. Then bam, one day I get on press ctrl+alt+T type in sudo startunity and it doesn't work! I am willing to reset my laptop and reinstall Linux if necessary but if its fixable please let me know! I've been looking around and haven't been able to find anything about this. Here's a screen shot of what it says:

Personally, I think its because my Chromebook automatically updated itself.
hey folks,
I always wonder why many programs from these operating systems are not cross platform? I mean, all three are using a linux kernel.
Sometimes I would like to run a gnu/linux program on an android/chromebook device and an android/chromebook program on gnu/linux. There are a few cross platform programs that I can think of like: Firefox, google chrome browser, and Netflix.
I know very little about android's and the chromebook os's inner workings, but I do know that both have many close source apps and proprietary software and drivers.
What else is on android and the chromebook os that makes it different from gnu/linux? And why do certain companies prefer to port programs to android and the chromebook os over gnu/linux?
I'm new to linux but I use linux a little at school and by connecting through a shell at home. Anyways, I just installed linux a little while ago and I opened a shell and tried to compile some java code by going to the directory of the code and typing "javac someCode.java" like I do at school but it says the command is not found.
I previously had installed the java runtime environment and I just went to go and try to install the java development kit but it says it was already installed.
Is there some sort of path I need to set for the shell to look for the java compiler? Thanks in advance.
Edit:
I have added aliases to my .cshrc file at school and I just found a bashrc file and csh.cshrc file in the /etc folder. Sorry, I'm really new to all of this. Anyways, I'm geussing I have to edit the bash file? Can anyone point me to a good tutorial of scripting for these files???
OK, I fixed the issue with the download. I installed Linux Mint Cinnamon "Rebecca" 17.1 on the computer. It said it was installed successfully, but when I rebooted all I got was a black screen with the cursor stuck in the upper left corner of the screen. I let it sit for a long time (maybe 45 minutes), did a control alt delete but nothing happened. I had to shut down the computer manually.
Hello Linux users. I'm described as a newbie (which i am) but you've never seen a newbie as new as I am I'll wager.
I installed Zorin 9 OS core as an alternative to Microsoft crap that I'm really tired of, (cost as well as never vending bugs). Yes I know I'll still have bugs with linux but at least the patches and fixes in any Linux distro is for the benefit of Linux users and not to sell more Microsoft crap.
I have evidently been reasonably successful to install the latest Zorin 9 with my desktop environment choice. However I'm used to (and like) the MS so called quick launch bar at the bottom of the XP desktop installation, from which I can place links of any app or web link to instantly go there. Correct me if I'm wrong but Linux has basically the same quick launch function which I can choose from the software center and I've tried to select and install at least 2 named Cairo-dock and Docky for example. I did choose and install those according to the Linux prompts but I notice no change in the "Avant Window Navigator" at the bottom of my desktop, and when i try to drag a web link or app to that bar it either flips back to the link spot i saved on the desktop, or there's no action at all. In other words I am not able to put a link or app on the AWN, which AWN does not serve as a dock launcher at all (except for my Firefox browser icon WHICH IS INSTALLED at the left bar location and does work to quick launch Firefox when I left click on it.
So how do I not only properly install that notorious quck launch app in linux Zorin 9 OS and finally drag or otherwise install my links there?
thanks for any advice or replies.
I recently installed debian-7.8.0-i386-DVD-1.iso on a VirtualBox. It "live booted" just fine and then I followed the install instructions. As far as I can tell it works. ??? I dont know. here is the issue. When I tried to instal from the Add/remove software in the applications. I get a notice to load 'Debian GNU/Linux 7.8.0_Wheezy_- Official i386 DVD Binary-1' in the dvd tray, after it starts to load/install. so what is really going on there? why do I need to use this? how do I get around it. I appreciate the input. Keep in mind I have know idea about how Linux works. First time user.

Hello. I am an absolute beginner with Linux and would appreciate a bit of hand holding. I am building a small computer for use with Ham radio applications and have never used Linux before.
I have downloaded a Ubuntu build onto a wintel machine and created a cd. The drive in the PC is a CCD an I have only ever used one on a windows machine and then I didn't install it.
Can someone guide me as to :
1) how I should format or in some other way prepare the SSd for the installation of Linux
2) tell me anything I should be aware of in installing Linux to the SSD
3) anything I should watch out for in using the SSd with Linux.
That last one may seem silly but I have been warned never to defrag on the Wintel machine as it will damage the SSD.
I look forward to any help / advice that you may have.
Best regards
Nick (GW6EWX)
