Help Requested On Installing Linux On An Unformatted SSD

Hello. I am an absolute beginner with Linux and would appreciate a bit of hand holding. I am building a small computer for use with Ham radio applications and have never used Linux before.

I have downloaded a Ubuntu build onto a wintel machine and created a cd. The drive in the PC is a CCD an I have only ever used one on a windows machine and then I didn't install it.

Can someone guide me as to :

1) how I should format or in some other way prepare the SSd for the installation of Linux
2) tell me anything I should be aware of in installing Linux to the SSD
3) anything I should watch out for in using the SSd with Linux.

That last one may seem silly but I have been warned never to defrag on the Wintel machine as it will damage the SSD.

I look forward to any help / advice that you may have.

Best regards

I Need To Learn How To Install Software On Linux.

Hi. Sorry to be so stupid, but I just managed to load and install this Linux (which I really like a lot) on my previously windows <--(bad) system.
But now I need to upgrade some software (like Adobe flash), and I have no clue how to do this. I understand I should go to my original linux distrubutor, and select software thru them (my "Linux distro").
But actually, it's been awhile since I did the install, and I dont exactly remember where I even got this distribution. (I know, I'm dumb--sorry).
Is there a way I can look at my linux system files and see who my distribution is thru, and where is their website. Or would it be easier if I just went thru the whole download and install of linux again <--(not really looking forward to that).
Or even, am I wrong about going thru the distro to do installs/upgrades?
Anything you can tell me will be greatly appreciated.

How To Grasp The Concept Of Linux

I've been a DOS / Windows user ever since I got my first computer. I've been on Linux for almost two weeks now, and it's still hard for me to get really into it. Mainly because it is a totally different concept.

If Windows has exe, bat, and com files, what does Linux have?

Can you even run an application/program in Linux?

Why is it so damn hard to get up-to-date stuff like flash plugins and java? or up-to-date browsers for that matter.

I love how stable Linux is now that I don't have to worry about viruses, but I am reluctant when it comes to installing and trying things because this one concept is so alien to me.

Linux Mint 16 Will Not Finish Booting From My Usb

I am trying to boot Linux Mint from an 8gb Sandisk USB. I changed my boot settings and it boots into what I believe is called grub? I am given two options, Boot Linux Mint, Boot Linux Mint (compatibility mode). When I select either of them all I get is a black screen. I've tried many things to get around this, messing with my graphics card settings (within grub), different USB's (another 8gb and a 32gb), I tried Ubuntu and that just doesn't boot at all I go straight back to my UEFI settings. I'm very new to Linux and I don't just want to hop in, I just want to boot from my USB whenever I want to play around with it. Thank You

Note: I'm running windows 8.1 currently on a ASUS N550JV laptop. I've been using the UUI from Pen Drive Linux.

How To Master Linux? Where Do I Start?

I'm new to Linux, I want to master all of the lovely little details about what makes Linux tick, and how it ticks. I would love to know any suggestions of where I should start. I want to know how anything, the hardware, software, and firmware works. I am wanting to get into computer science, I'm very motivated and am willing to put in the time to learn and master Linux. I figure that Linux is a good of a place to start as any, seeing how there is a lot of source code to study and open source software to play around with.

A Trust Or Just For Fun.

Hello.
I have a question. Can you tell me why some people in large companies like Google, Yahoo and Etc use Mac OS X?
I guess all of them support Linux but why Apple?
Why some Linux tutorial videos or even Linux learning is in Mac OS X?
Did you think about it and provide a solution's?

Tnx.
