This is kind of a linux question.
I have no window at work. I was thinking of taking a small LCD and hooking it to a Raspberry Pi (Or some other tiny board PC) and then linking that to my cell phone to stream a webcam from Grand Turk, or wherever I want to see that day. My phone is 4G and I have 30gigs of data a month. My question is, how much bandwidth does VIEWING a webcam take? I think most of them update every 30 seconds or so.
On a related note, does anyone have experience with LCD4Linux? Is it possible to use that to display a webfeed?
Thank you
I’ve been fascinated by the Raspberry Pi since it was announced but have never gotten one. I think I am about to take a bite and I want to pair it with the LCD panel from an old laptop (LCD controller comes off of ebay) to create an information panel for my living room.
So far, I’d like it to display the current weather (Condition and temperature), network load, and automatically show a webcam feed from the front porch if it detects motion.
I’m new to Linux so I am not sure how to do all of this but that is for another thread. My question is: What would you do with a passive LCD panel in your living space?

I was recently given a Samsung Convoy 3 phone as an insurance replacement. One of the phone's features is that you are supposed to be able to transfer data directly from the phone to your computer using a USB cable, but the phone's data transfer program (Mass Storage) has been hanging at the step where it contacts the computer. I am running Linux Mint 13, and I've determined that the operating system recognizes the phone when I plug it in, but it doesn't mount automatically. Verizon and Samsung have not been helpful.
Today I figured out how to mount and unmount the phone manually using mtpfs, but I wasn't sure what program to assign to open it, and the one I chose didn't work. Now I can't figure out how to change the program assignment -- no "open with" option comes up when I right-click on the icon on my desktop -- and I'm also not sure what program to use.
I'm willing to do the whole data transfer via command line if someone can walk me through it. I'm not very experienced with command-line prompts yet, but I've loved the ones I've learned so far.
Thanks!
Hi all,
I'm aspiring new Linux Administrator and I have been given tasks of looking at various Linux servers and clients. As a newbie, I often forget/confuse about the series of steps I should take to accomplish certain tasks against various types of Linux distro. So I have some large no of notes in text file format, which i often refer to.
Earlier I used Microsoft OneNote, which can be used to view/update/create notes from my home PC, my Android phone or through various web browsers at client's site. But now, I am not able to access notes simply because, (1) MS SkyDrive is too slow, (2) Many of Linux machines have no GUI, (3) I'm not allowed to carry my Android phone inside server rooms, etc.
Long story short, I should be able to access my text notes in terminal from any machine which has internet connection. And also if I may extend, also in my android phone.
What I have with me is one .com domain with hosting space for next 1 year.
Any Idea on how I should proceed will be really appreciated.
Many thanks.
The Centrino laptop I have as my server seems like overkill so I am looking at some alternatives. At first I was going to use a Raspberry Pi but someone on these forums pointed out there are better solutions. This lead me to the pcDuino 3 Nano and the Odroid-C1
First, my server will handle a printer, a file repository, simple backups of the most vital files (Pictures, documents, etc), and coordinate my webcam surveillance feeds (I think zoneminder?) . The problem is I am a PC guy and have little more than basic information about linux or ARM architecture. The only ARM device I own, aside from cell phones, is a Pogoplug that I have managed to kill by trying to put linux on it.
I am cruising Google trying to glean as much information as I can but the level of ignorance on my part is staggering. This leads me to you wonderful people.
To make things easier, the specs:
pcDuino 3 Nano
1 gig of RAM
1GHz Cortex A7 Duel Core CPU
4GB flash memory + micro SD card slot
3 USB ports and 1 SATA, among others
Odroid-C1
1 gig of RAM
1.5Ghz Cortex A5 quad core CPU
micro SD card slot
4 USB ports among others
From my untrained eye, I think the pcDuino is the better choice due to the SATA port but the Odroid does have a quad core CPU. Will linux take advantage of those extra cores? Also, since these are ARM CPUs I understand they won’t run normal linux distributions. Will I have problems with SAMBA, CUPS and RSYNC? My research says no but I’d like to confirm before I spend the money.
As always thank you in advance.
I'm sorry to ask such a simple question but every time I think I figure something out or think I'm going somewhere get stopped dead in my tracks. My friend installed linux on my computer and then moved away immediately so I have no one to help me!
I downloaded the webcam program Cheese. I found through some tutorials that I have to copy the folder to the /opt/ folder and the only way to do that is through the terminal. I found this tutorial and still can't manage to copy the folder. These are the problems I run into:
1. I don't know where to open the terminal. I've tried opening it from the extracted Cheese folder in my downloads folder and from the /opt/ folder itself. It opens up but:
2. when I type the command sudo cp -r cheese /opt/ it will ask for modernnewspeak's password. When I try to type this in nothing happens, even though it JUST let me type in the command. I pressed "enter" thinking maybe it was hiding my password and I get the message "cannot stat 'cheese'. No such file or directory"
please tell me what I'm doing wrong! I tried to follow that tutorial and look through the FAQ here but I cannot figure this out. Thank you in advance!
Hi all,
I'm not quite a newbie having been using Linux for around a year now and think I know some of the basics at least. In the main it does what I want, some things better than they ever did on Window while some things frustratingly more awkward!
I have a load of music files that I'd like to search through and transfer some to the external sd card of my android phone. This was something that was a doddle during my Windows days but seems unbelievably difficult now. Back then I used a media player I loved, Mediamonkey, and could simply drag and drop whichever tracks I wanted, or right click and move to a device that way. Sadly this doesn't work too well with WINE though so is fine on XP through Virtualbox, apart from a lack of USB function.
I'm using Linux Mint 17.1 with a KDE desktop.
When I plug my phone into a USB port, it is recognised straight away as an android phone and I can navigate around it with no problems in Dolphin. I could look for each individual file and transfer them that way but with around 30,000 mp3s the task would take quite some time!
None of the media players I've tried so far recognise the phone or the storage on it.
I've installed Windows XP on Virtualbox and have Mediamonkey on there with all my audio files. I can't seem to get Virtualbox to recognise any USB devices so I can't transfer files that way either.
I find it annoying that, in effect, Android is a variety of Linux yet connectivity between the two is so complicated. Airdroid has been the best way that I've found but that's not an option.
I've been trying for 4 hours now and have got nowhere. If anyone can help I'd be grateful Thanks
Hello all, I currently have a very unreliable connection to the internet. I have a IPhone six that I was grandfather in on that has unlimited data and the personal hotspot feature on. I have bought many different modems, adapters..that is why I kept seeing this link pop up, (I was going to try and and even clone a ahhh "sheep" later). That is how desperate I am. I have rooms full of old hotspot devices. hardware, cords, routers, old phones, antennas, etc). I am currently just using wifi-over-wan on a CP-MBR95. As I am sure you all know this gives me barely enough bandwidth to download a Game of Thrones episode, and the signal fluctuates continually. In fact this is the second attempt at posting here because I lost the signal, and had to start over just as I had almost finished the last one, so I shall wrap it up. I would like any suggestions on what Linux version I should put on the awesome new hardware I received yesterday, and any suggestions on a bootloader would be great too. I am currently using Yosimite, but occasionally I need to play Skyrim or something so my head doesn't explode, or I wear out the reset button.
[B]Primarily[B], I need to first make sure I am at least getting enough bandwidth to justify my $180 a month Verizon bill (plus all the hardware I buy that never fits or works as expected, and ideally want be able to set up a VPN and share my data with friends. family, and community. I usually am quite impulsive, obsessive, and I do not often ask for help from others. That is most likely what has impeded my progress thus far. That and the fact the web can be loaded with poor information. I do not have any programming skills, but I have a strong imagination, and a willingness to learn. I also am devoted to aid the next curious soul who has the same fascination with getting in way over his head, and keeping at it until he at least knows more about something than he did if we spent his days with his head in the sand as sadly many of us do here in the US, especially the parts I'm from.
Thank you for suffering through that novice novella,
I look forward to learning what I can from you all.
Respectfully,
RaVen162
P.S. - I'm not sure how things work around here but if anyone has any suggestions at all, or have someway I can contribute, please don't hesitate to contact me. I got very close to losing my unlimited plan yesterday for upgrading to a 4g LTE phone on another line and putting the sim in the only plan with unlimited data. (if you ask questions like, "isn't that a violation of our contract by denying me the services I have paid for at an inflated cost for 8 years now." They usally say something like I'm not sure Sir. I'm not a lawyer..."OK can you put me in touch with him when he gets back from his deposition over at Tracfone"?.. got a call back 5 min later and he had no problems with what I did. By the way, just a heads up. I may me a smartass from time to time, but I am rarely one without the other. I apologize in advance for breaking any rules. Hopefully you guys will let me hang around for a bit. I really want to learn any OS I can, especially opensource ones. Thanks Again!
My son built me a new desktop from the ground up, which works beautifully, but I'm new to Linux (Ubuntu) and learning as I go. Since my computer is custom, I don't have any "instructions" to lean on. I want to upload pictures from my cell phone, but don't know how because I'm not very computer literate (sorry!). I have tried plugging in my LG G3 phone with a USB cable, but my computer doesn't seem to respond to it. Nothing happens. Can someone give me some pointers? Thanks!
Thanks so much, Ztcoracat, I did manage to get all the pictures printed out that I needed by using your idea of emailing them to my email address and then printing them out from there. Great idea and good advice!! Thanks again!!
Hello everybody,
I am seeking help regarding sharing internet connection. I would be greatful.
I have;
A Laptop : Samsung RV509, i3, 300GB HDD, 3GB Ram, Dual boot Windows7 & LM 17 cinnamon 32bit. WiFi & Bluetooth available.
A Desktop PC : Celeron CPU 2.4GHZ, 40 GB HDD, 1GB RAM, LiveUSB-LM 17 cinnamon 32bit, No WiFi hardware available, No Bluetooth hardware available.
A mobile phone : Nokia Asha 500, WiFi & Bluetooth available.
An old USB data cable: with which the mobile phone can be connected to the computers. I have successfully connected and transfered data back & forth, and also shared/connected Mobile-Broadband-internet to both Laptop and Desktop.
What I have been doing now is; I have an internet connection to my Laptop with an external modem and Ethernet. Its working fine. I have an unlimited plan and so I want to share this internet connection on the mobile phone too; instead of incuring extra cost by connecting to the internet directly through the phone. I am successful at that. I can share this internet connection on my phone through WiFi.
Now, what I want to do is; without buying any extra hardware, to share this same internet connection on my Desktop PC, too.
What I tried is; I searched the web, but didn't find any solution. Now I am here. Please kindly help me.
Thank you & Regards
Anil
