Gedit Not Opening From Terminal - Not Authenticated

I have just installed a new debian OS and want to change a file.
For some reason, gedit didn't come pre-packaged so I installed it with apt-get.

When I use a terminal as root, gedit won't open. I get the following error message:
Code:
gedit grub
(gedit:3679): EggSMClient-WARNING **: Failed to connect to the session
manager: Authentication Rejected, reason : None of the authentication
protocols specified are supported and host-based authentication
failed

Gedit will open page files on the desktop - but not on the terminal.
Is this because I haven't done something with the new install or should I remove gedit and reinstall?

A Gedit Warning.

I have Ubuntu 14.04. gedit is my preferred text and code editor. All of a sudden I am getting this warnng when I open a txt file:

Quote:
(gedit:3860): Gtk-WARNING **: GtkScrolledWindow 0x9bba3c8 is mapped but visible child GtkScrollbar 0x9bbc7a8 is not mapped
There are four such warnings in a row (or rather column). They litter my terminal output. What is this and how to correct it?

Thanks, - A.

Gedit Won't Save; Advanced Level?

Hello - I admit to being new to Linux. I'm not sure if this problem should be re-routed to a more advanced level, though.

I downloaded Oracle Linux ver. 7 on my server with Server settings (and a Gnome GUI). After running through the terminal basics, I tried opening gedit to test out its capabilities. It wouldn't let me save to folder; it just grayed out and I had to quit the application.

I modified gedit to -rwxrwxrwx (chmod) and took ownership of the file (chown) under my user profile and group. When that didn't work, I re-logged in as root and modified gedit back to root ownership and group, and it still won't save changes to any file location.

One more thing: gksudo didn't work, either...

Any suggestions?

Root Terminal: 'Granted Permissions Without Asking For Password' - Is This Normal?

I am using debian 7.7 stable and when I open the root terminal it asks for the password.

But if I open it again, I get the message: 'Granted permissions without asking for password. The /usr/bin/x-terminal-emulator program was started with the privileges of the root user without the need to ask for a password, due to your system's authentication mechanism setup'.

Oh, really? Because I don't remember setting up any 'authentication mechanism setup'.
How can I change this so the root terminal always asks for the password?
Do I have a trojan already? Because I installed the OS just a few days ago.

Thanks very much.

Garbage Characters Appear In Gedit.

Hi there. My environment: Ubuntu 12.04, preferred editor is gedit. All of a sudden, just today I realized that I have close to 200 lines of chinese characters intemingled with small squares and circles instead of my gfortran code when I open this file in gedit. It has about 900 lines. I also see a red band on top of the editor window saying there are bad characters and if I want to quit or keep editing.

I then open the same file in vim and find that the file is intact, no errant characters at the bottom. I then uninstall gedit, reinstall it and find the same. The bottom of the file's filled with this chinese garbage. Any idea how to correct it?

Thanks, - A.

X11 Connection Rejected Due To Wrong Authentication

hi experts

I got a bit of problem with the below situation:

Code:
root@kvm_host1:/mnt/nfs# virt-manager &
[1] 4663
root@kvm_host1:/mnt/nfs# X11 connection rejected because of wrong authentication.

[1]+ Done virt-manager
root@kvm_host1:/mnt/nfs# su test
test@kvm_host1:/mnt/nfs$ virt-manager &
[1] 4679

As you can see, I ssh into my ubuntu host with user test, but during some nfs config I su into root, then try to launch virt-manager GUI via X11. Which obviously fails I guess since root wants to launch X11 session but I established the session as user test.

My question is this: Is there a way to stop this from happening? to allow my root to launch the GUI as well?

Thanks

Update Grub Command Not Working

I have made a change to GRUB2 bootloader in etc/default/grub.
Now I need to run 'update grub' for the change to take effect.
However, the 'update grub' command on the terminal is giving this error message:
Code:
root@debian:/# update grub
bash: update: command not found

Can someone please explain why this command is no longer working?

I've had to make a change to grub because I tried to install a new distro which meant I had to alter grub.
The install wasn't successful so I deleted the grub file and then re-installed it.
The re-installed grub needs a change so I can get sound on my pc.
However, I can't add these changes because the 'update grub' command doesn't work.

I've checked the grub file with another debian distro and they are both the same.
So now I don't know if I need to check if a different grub file is the problem or anything else.
Can someone help?

Search Function For FireFox Browser?

It is too bad there is no search capability in the Mozilla browser. While reading large pdf files I am forced to copy their content into gedit and use its search tool.

Is there a way to change that? Thanks, - A.
