PcDuino 3 Nano Or Odroid-C1 For A Home Server?

The Centrino laptop I have as my server seems like overkill so I am looking at some alternatives. At first I was going to use a Raspberry Pi but someone on these forums pointed out there are better solutions. This lead me to the pcDuino 3 Nano and the Odroid-C1

First, my server will handle a printer, a file repository, simple backups of the most vital files (Pictures, documents, etc), and coordinate my webcam surveillance feeds (I think zoneminder?) . The problem is I am a PC guy and have little more than basic information about linux or ARM architecture. The only ARM device I own, aside from cell phones, is a Pogoplug that I have managed to kill by trying to put linux on it.

I am cruising Google trying to glean as much information as I can but the level of ignorance on my part is staggering. This leads me to you wonderful people.

To make things easier, the specs:

pcDuino 3 Nano
1 gig of RAM
1GHz Cortex A7 Duel Core CPU
4GB flash memory + micro SD card slot
3 USB ports and 1 SATA, among others

Odroid-C1
1 gig of RAM
1.5Ghz Cortex A5 quad core CPU
micro SD card slot
4 USB ports among others

From my untrained eye, I think the pcDuino is the better choice due to the SATA port but the Odroid does have a quad core CPU. Will linux take advantage of those extra cores? Also, since these are ARM CPUs I understand they won’t run normal linux distributions. Will I have problems with SAMBA, CUPS and RSYNC? My research says no but I’d like to confirm before I spend the money.

As always thank you in advance.

How Do I Get Sound In Mint?

Hello Everyone,

I installed Linux Mint about four days ago, after a few hitches that I was able to figure out on my own, I got everything up and running and am enjoying my experience. There is one problem however, that I haven't been able to fix myself, so now I'm asking for the communities help. Since day 1 I haven't had any sound from Mint. I've tried videos through Firefox, music on Banshee, and system sounds but nothing is working at all. I have spent the better part of the last three days ripping my hair out and jumping from source to source looking for an answer and so far nothing has worked. I have tried a lot of things including forcing ALSA to reload, and even uninstalling and reinstalling ALSA and Pulse all together. Therein lies my next issue, I followed a guide off of the forums to try uninstalling and reinstalling ALSA and Pulse and it seemed all went according to plan, I reveived no errors during the process, but now my little sound icon in the system tray is missing.

Here is the info on my audio device:

Code: Select all
Audio: Card-1: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] FCH Azalia Controller driver: snd_hda_intel bus-ID: 00:14.2
Card-2: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD/ATI] Device 9840 driver: snd_hda_intel bus-ID: 00:01.1
Sound: Advanced Linux Sound Architecture ver: k3.13.0-37-generic

Any help is greatly appreciated as having no sound, while not vital, is a major inconvenience.

Thank you!

Newbie With A PCI To Parallel Card Problem

I'm a newbie with a Linux box running Ubuntu 10.04 that I'm attempting to setup to control a desktop CNC. The box didn't have a parallel port so I purchased a SYBA PCI to Parallel card. Following the instructions from the card I ran "lspci -v" and below is what it showed;

03:00.0 Communication controller: NetMos Technology PCI 9835 Multi-I/O Controller (rev 01)
Subsystem: LSI Logic / Symbios Logic Device 0010
Flags: medium devsel, IRQ 19
I/O ports at ec00 [size=8]
I/O ports at e880 [size=8]
I/O ports at e800 [size=8]
I/O ports at e480 [size=8]
I/O ports at e400 [size=8]
I/O ports at e080 [size=16]
Kernel modules: parport_serial

The instruction stated to use the following command;

/sbin/modprobe parport_pc io=e080, irq=19 If I read the instructions correctly.

Unfortunately, the instructions didn't say where to add this command line. Also I didn't see any drivers listed on the disk for the chipset referenced above. So is the card trying to use a generic driver installed by Linux?

Your guidance is greatly appreciated!!
Thank you Brian

Trouble Installing To Presario F730US

I'm having trouble getting OS installs to work on this low-end laptop. I've tried Linux Mint, OpenSuse, Manjaro, Zorin OS Core 9 (32bit, 64bit and lite versions). My problem is that once installed, the graphics aren't rendered correctly or (with Zorin) the system would freeze right after logging in. Manjaro did install and work, but the screen was so dark it was unusable, even after adjusting the brightness levels. With Linux Mint, the compatibility mode worked perfectly using the live cd, but the graphics were too distorted once installed. OpenSuse also had distorted graphics. I just want to put the laptop to use until it dies on my.

I've tested the hard drive with the on board diagnostics and I've checked the memory. Neither of those tests gave any errors.

The specs a

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core TK-55
2 gigs of DDR2 memory
Nvidia GeForce Go 6100 graphics card.

Any help would be appreciated. I'm not an expert, so be gentle with the help and recommendations.

Arch Linux 2012 Does Not Boot From Flash Media

Hi.
I am trying to install archlinuxarm-13-06-2012.img on a micro SD card. I have followed the tutorial on http://www.instructables.com/id/Rasp...ing-ArchLinux/ to install the OS on the card however when i restarted my machine all i seen was a blinking cursor but that was it. No menu option no nothing.

Then I thought, maybe I didn't do it properly, so I have installed arch linux on a 8 GB usb stick but the result was the same as it was for the sd card. I have tried various software to install the OS on the USB stick : USBwrite and Win32Imager.

I have read some online stuff..but the information is quite varied and I'm running out of time.

Any help please?

How Do I Use My AMD 280X To Render Game Graphics?

So total Linux noob here, so I apologize for poor wording or not being able to understand anything!

So I want to love Linux (mint, btw) I really do, but my one problem is that I can't run games because, despite having the HDMI cord running through the graphics card, Linux is for some reason using the Intel integrated graphics as a renderer. Now, I have no tools to totally confirm this (I primarily use MSI Afterburner on windows) other than noticing that any linux games I have run sort of poorly (none of the games I have for linux other than Witcher 2 are demanding enough to be obvious). So how do I (or can I even) use my AMD card as a renderer? After looking around for solutions, I've picked up that AMD/Linux support is sort of poor, but is it really excluding me from using my card at all?! Thanks!

Linux USB Port As A 'flash Disk'

Hey All,

Is there a way to present a path or other block device to a USB port on a Linux server then have that port connected to a USB port of another device (ie USB to USB) and have it look like a flash disk?

I can plug a USB flash disk to a router just fine. But if I wanted a device to access a path off of another device int he absence of NFS or CIFS capability, that would be handy.

In other words, anyway to assign storage to a USB port in Linux? It would be akin to something like SAN with a target and source just with USB.

Cheers,
DH

Linux File Server

Hello Everyone
I have installed Ubuntu Server on a 500 GB drive formatted as EXT4.

Of of my Media, movies, music and pictures are from Windows PC's formatted in NTFS.
As all of the computers connecting to the server will be windows based will NTFS be fine or will I have to reformat them to work. The two media drives are 2 x 2GB Sata drives.
Could you tell me if this setup would work or will I have to reformat and and transfer the files to a new filesystem.
Also as a file server whats the best linux file system to use so it will work with windows PC's in a lan flawlessly.
Thanks for you expertise.

Comparing SSD And Compact Flash Memories

Hi all,

I have a device which has a Compact Flash card and a SSD. The file system is split so that everything except "/home" is stored on the compact flash card.

On the compact flash I am experiencing partition table corruption due to power loses when writing to the CF card.

One solution to this is to move everything onto the solid state drive, but as this is also flash memory - is the rish of corruption still the same as using the CF card?

Thanks in advance for any replies.
