Want A Reliable Music File Player For Red Hat

Hi. I am a noob to Red Hat but have previously used but am no expert with other linuxes such as Puppy and Ubuntu. Can anyone suggest a good music file player for Red Hat (or in general) ? I have many files that I have recorded from records and cassette tapes but Itunes/ Windows won't let me play them, saying that the ORIGINAL cannot be found, so I am switching back to Linux. Thank you. Admins- if this is in the wrong area feel free to move it. Thanks.

Help With Music Player And USB Flash Storage

I keep my Music on a USB flash drive. I do not have room on my laptop to store my mp3 library so this is not an option. Whenever, I remove the flash drive (or restart my computer, i think) my music player (rhythmbox currently) forgets where the music is stored. I have to go through reimporting my whole music library which is time consuming and tedious. I imagine that my music player can't find the files because the flash drive gets mapped to a different mount point or something after restarting or removing the drive.

TL;DR
How can I setup my laptop so that my music player can find my music library on a usb flash drive without needing to constantly re-import my library?

Also, I have the same question to syncing to cloud storage. How can I automatically sync flash storage to the cloud?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Can't Play Avi File In Parole Media Player

Hi. Running Xubuntu 14.10 in Dell Optiplex 170L. Parole Media Player is on 14.10 but it crashes when it attempts to play an .avi file. Looking around some people suggested VLC media player, but on the Ubuntu Software Center it doesn't say it handles .avi.

Transferring Audio Files From A Media Player To An Android Phone

Hi all,

I'm not quite a newbie having been using Linux for around a year now and think I know some of the basics at least. In the main it does what I want, some things better than they ever did on Window while some things frustratingly more awkward!

I have a load of music files that I'd like to search through and transfer some to the external sd card of my android phone. This was something that was a doddle during my Windows days but seems unbelievably difficult now. Back then I used a media player I loved, Mediamonkey, and could simply drag and drop whichever tracks I wanted, or right click and move to a device that way. Sadly this doesn't work too well with WINE though so is fine on XP through Virtualbox, apart from a lack of USB function.

I'm using Linux Mint 17.1 with a KDE desktop.

When I plug my phone into a USB port, it is recognised straight away as an android phone and I can navigate around it with no problems in Dolphin. I could look for each individual file and transfer them that way but with around 30,000 mp3s the task would take quite some time!

None of the media players I've tried so far recognise the phone or the storage on it.

I've installed Windows XP on Virtualbox and have Mediamonkey on there with all my audio files. I can't seem to get Virtualbox to recognise any USB devices so I can't transfer files that way either.

I find it annoying that, in effect, Android is a variety of Linux yet connectivity between the two is so complicated. Airdroid has been the best way that I've found but that's not an option.

I've been trying for 4 hours now and have got nowhere. If anyone can help I'd be grateful Thanks

Recursively Move Files Of One Type And Create Destination Sub-folders

I'm just getting into Bash scripting, and would appreciate some help with this question. My music collection is split into a smaller, "active" set, kept on my laptop, and a much larger collection on an external hard drive. I've just converted some of the larger filetypes on my "active" set to *.mp3, and now want to move all the original files (*.flac) to the external hard drive. I need some help putting together a command or script that will recursively search my active music set for *.flac and then move them, but keeping the source directory structure. Some or all of these subdirectories may not exist on the destination.

eg. On the active music set, I may have:

/Music/artist1/album1/(a mix of *.mp3 and *.flac files)
/Music/artist2/album1/(a mix of *.mp3 and *.flac files)

and on the hard drive

/Music 2/artist1/album2/(the contents of the album)

So when copying, it'll need to create "/album1/" in "artist1" on the destination, and also "/artist2/album1/"

Thanks in advance!

Need Advice: Reinstall Or Dump Linux Mint?

Since I have not found a solution to my intermittent boot problem I'm thinking of reinstalling Linux Mint, switching to a different Linux distribution, or turning back to the dark side, i.e. Windows. This was my first Linux install and I was really impressed with the OS and the applications. I like Linux Mint but I want a reliable computer and if I cannot even get it to boot properly then that's a long-term concern.

The problem with a reinstall of Linux Mint is that I don't know what to do differently. I don't know what, if anything, I did wrong the first time. Of course, switching to a different distribution is also a crap shoot since I don't know what went wrong with Mint. I don't really want to go back to Windows but it's been a stable, reliable OS for me for years.

Anyone have any advice?

Perplexing Cron Audio Problem

I'm running LinuxLite 2.0 32bit on a Dell 3000.

I have never come across anything like this and to tell you, I am stumped.

Here are the contents of my crontab file:

Code:
# Edit this file to introduce tasks to be run by cron.
#
# Each task to run has to be defined through a single line
# indicating with different fields when the task will be run
# and what command to run for the task
#
# To define the time you can provide concrete values for
# minute (m), hour (h), day of month (dom), month (mon),
# and day of week (dow) or use '*' in these fields (for 'any').#
# Notice that tasks will be started based on the cron's system
# daemon's notion of time and timezones.
#
# Output of the crontab jobs (including errors) is sent through
# email to the user the crontab file belongs to (unless redirected).
#
# For example, you can run a backup of all your user accounts
# at 5 a.m every week with:
# 0 5 * * 1 tar -zcf /var/backups/home.tgz /home/
#
# For more information see the manual pages of crontab(5) and cron(8)
#
# m h dom mon dow command
*/10 * * * * /usr/bin/arecord -t wav -f cd -d 42 /home/randy/Music/lanting$(date "+\%^b\%d\%y").wav

If I run this from the terminal, everything is fine. It properly records the audio:

Code:
/usr/bin/arecord -t wav -f cd -d 42 /home/randy/Music/lanting$(date "+\%^b\%d\%y").wav

If I run this as it is shown in my crontab file, it records but there is no audio recorded.:

Code:
*/10 * * * * /usr/bin/arecord -t wav -f cd -d 42 /home/randy/Music/lanting$(date "+\%^b\%d\%y").wav

What could be causing this? I tried different cron settings for example 15 14 * * 2

This recorded at 2:15pm on Tuesday (today) but no audio. Yet if I run the code as mentioned above, from the terminal without the cron settings, the recording is fine.

Any ideas what I should do?

Linux File Server

Hello Everyone
I have installed Ubuntu Server on a 500 GB drive formatted as EXT4.

Of of my Media, movies, music and pictures are from Windows PC's formatted in NTFS.
As all of the computers connecting to the server will be windows based will NTFS be fine or will I have to reformat them to work. The two media drives are 2 x 2GB Sata drives.
Could you tell me if this setup would work or will I have to reformat and and transfer the files to a new filesystem.
Also as a file server whats the best linux file system to use so it will work with windows PC's in a lan flawlessly.
Thanks for you expertise.
