Server Sleep Issues

Hello,

I've recently built a home server by updating my old gaming PC and adding a second drive. I used fstab to mount the second drive and everything has been working great.

I only need the server to work when I'm home and awake so I set it up to sleep and wake on lan. Now when the PC wakes up the second drive is not mounted anymore.

Does anyone know what I can do to fix this?

Thanks
BTW I'm using Xubuntu.

Install Onto Second Hard Drive

Hello

My harddrive on my home server computer seems to have corrupted, likly due to some recent power outtages (using it as a home nas, game server, nothing important really)...
It was previously running windows 7 because I took the harddrive from my old computer, but now as I have to format it anyway I might as well do it right.

Since my server does not have a CD drive (that works) I am hoping for a way to intall Debian onto the harddrive from my main computer (running windows 8).
I have plugged it in, and the drive seems fully functional.

I'm not very skilled with Linux, and am completely on bare ground. My googling has not come up with an answer that I have understood yet.

TL;DR - How do i install Debian onto a secondary harddrive plugged into my computer take this drive and put it into another computer and boot from it?

Backups And External Drives

Hello everyone,

I recently had an issue where I lost my whole backup server due to an electrical overload causing my server to literally explode and fried all 4 of my terabyte drives.... needless to say, I have no more backups because of this, and everywhere I read about backups said that setting up a raid array would allow me to keep good backups.... boy did I learn this lesson the hard way in needing to have some sort of external backup option, which brings me to this post and my questions:

I'm using Ubuntu 14.04 LTS server on an older Dell Poweredge 600sc, and I was thinking of using WD Passport 1Tb external drives to be used as my "offsite" backup option. I don't have a lot of data, and my current backup schedule is only a weekly backup, so thinking that if I have two of these passport drives so that I can have one drive offsite and one attached to the server, and rotate them every 4 weeks so as not to loose all my data.

Here's my question: Ideally, I would love to just be able to unplug the current drive, plug in the new drive and have everything work. However, I don't see this actually working, but if there's a way to do this, that would be totally awesome.... ;-)

So, realistically, I know I will have to unmount the one drive, unplug it, then plug in the new drive and mount it on the system. Is there a way to mount this to the same mount point automatically so that I don't have to rewrite my backup script each time I swap drives out so that the backups go to the same mount point? Or will the UUID's get messed up each time I do this?

Hopefully this makes sense and an easy solution can be found to accomodate this idea.....

Thanks again for all your help. This site is awesome for newbies such as myself........

Auto Mount 2 Hard Drives Attached By USB To Router

Hi all. My first time post and very new to linux.
I am using linux Mint Debian version.

My goal is to auto mount 2 external harddrives (Each hard drive is 2TB) attached to the 2 usb ports on my asus wireless router model rt-n56r.

I have succeeded in auto mounting my first drive HDD1 by configuring fstab file:

//192.168.1.1/HDD1 /media/public cifs username=**,password=**,rw,nounix,iocharset=utf8,file_mode=0777,dir_mode=0777 0 0

At boot this partition is mounted without issue.

In attempting to mount the second hard drive HDD2 I added another entry in fstab as follows:

//192.168.1.1/HDD2 /media/public cifs username=**,password=**,rw,nounix,iocharset=utf8,file_mode=0777,dir_mode=0777 0 0

It appears that both HDD1 and HDD2 mount however, when entering the partition only files and directories of the second hard drive appear.

So I changed the mount point in the second hard drive to reflect /media1/public1 and after the configuration neither hard drive appears to have mounted.

I tried using UUID instead of path to partition but cannot get even 1 attached hard drive to mount.

I appreciate in advance the help and assistance to my query.

Neither Mouse Nor Keyboard Wakes Up My Computer

Hi,

Xubuntu on an old Mac Mini.
I don't know how to do much so please give basic instructions.

I use my power button to put the computer to sleep. Only the power button wakes it up again. It used to wake if I jiggled my mouse or pressed any key.

Is there something I can do so the mouse or keyboard will wake it up?

NFS Won't Mount On Boot, But Good Manually (Debian Using NFS4)

I've setup a NFS4 file share on an usb drive on a server at home for my personal use. Both client and server use Debian stable (3.2.0-4-amd64). I followed the tutorial he

http://initrd.org/wiki/NFS_Setup

My setup seems to work fine if I mount it manually, just won't mount at bootup. Looking around online I see that this has been a common and long-standing problem- evidently the system tries to mount the NFS before the network is up.

I found a work-around- add this line to the /etc/rc.local file:

Code:
mount -a -t nfs4

Now it works, but of course I still have to wait for the initial timeout (60 seconds?) and a few more for this to work.

I find this really odd. Lots of online discussion about this for many years going. What is the real story on this? Is there some configuration setting that I (and many others) have simply missed?

BTW- many of the solutions I see online are old, won't work with NFS4, or are OS specific.

What Linux System For A Simple Linux Web Server

The local provider has given us a fixed IP so we can have a web server for the car club's domain.

I will be using a Dell 2400 desktop computer with a 1.8 GHz Pentium 4 processor, 1 GB RAM, 40 GB hard drive and a DVD drive.

I want to use command line, not GUI and FTP the club's car pictures from my home.

My only Linux experience was sparse use of Red Hat 2.05 which is now 15 years old and not secure.

If the structure and folders are the same, Can I use CentOS 5.11 or 6.6

Lost On Unbuntu Linux File Systems

I am trying to create a combined media and storage server (NAS) on my new Unbuntu server. I have a 256GB drive as my boot drive and I have two 1TB drives that are empty. I want to use the two 1TB drives as storage for some important data and also for the media that will be played/collected for my XMBC server. I want to be able to access/manipulate these shares/files/data from my Windows computers over my home network.

I have Unbuntu 14.04 and Webmin installed.

I greatly appreciate any assistance. I feel like I am running around in circles on Webmin with this.

NFS Response Is Very Slow

Hi Everyone,

We are using Dell Power Edge R510 server as a central storage in Linux network. I have configured RAID6 on 10 near-line SAS hard disks. Using NFS i have exported one directory and mounted it on other machines.

Recently we are facing one problem, when anyone read/write big file (2-3GB)from NFS drive, others feel very slow access to that drive. Sometime we can't open simple text file till complete read/write process.

I have remounted NFS drive but still problem as it is.

Can anyone help me to solve this problem.
