I checked the echo/sound test. Worked. The video test. Worked. A friend called. I could see and hear her perfectly. She could hear me perfectly but couldn't see me. I noticed the video icon with the red line thru it so I clicked that. My friend could now see and hear me perfectly, and I could hear her, but there was now a purple flashing screen over her face. Eventually the purple flashing went to a solid purple and then the entire computer froze solid and I had to power it off.
The only other clue is to get the sound to work on my end I had to go into the pulseaudio volume control and in the input devices next to quickcam Communicate MP/S5500AnalgoMono click on the green check mark (that when I hover the cursor over it it says "set as fallback").
I just downloaded zorin. I cannot find the sound control, nor do I hear any sound.
I tried to use the search option on this forum but had trouble finding the thread I was looking for.
Thanks in advance
Update: Ok, i got the volume control to show up on the panel, down next to the clock. Everything is turned all the way up, when i pull up pulse audio i can see the sound meter fluctuating while i play a video, but there is no sound coming out of the speakers.
How do i get sound?
Thanks again
Dear all,
I have recently upgrade my distribution, everything worked fine except for the sound system.
The audio stops working after a while. I lose the sound after several minutes of Skype use or while watching videos in my browser, it just happens....
But not only Skype or video audio stops, all sounds stop as well. I need to reboot the system to get the sound back, and then the same, at certain point all sounds disappear.
I tried many things that I found (reinstall alsa, kill and restart pulseaudio, install pavucontrol) but none of them seems to work.
This is the result of aplay -l
card 0: MID [HDA Intel MID], device 0: ALC889 Analog [ALC889 Analog]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: MID [HDA Intel MID], device 1: ALC889 Digital [ALC889 Digital]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
The weird thing is that the audio meter of the output sound from pavucontrol shows signal. The bar moves when receiving sound but no sound can be listened.
Typing pulseaudio with or without sound gives me:
E: [pulseaudio] pid.c: Daemon already running.
E: [pulseaudio] main.c: pa_pid_file_create() failed.
I though the second line was telling that something went wrong, but the sound works at the beginning even with that message.
I do not know what else to do. Any help would be more than welcome since I'm really frustrated.
Thank you very much for your help.
Im unable to hear sound! please help. I have alsamixer open and Ive tried everything. Running linux mint.
Before i start id like to say im a total newb to linux.. Used windows for years but I'm not tech minded, my old pc run slow so i bought an ipad! Then was given a linux pc but a good friend about 4-5 years after buying an ipad.
Brief history
A friend of mine the other day gave me a pc he had lying around unused but dusty and had linux installed. i got it home and it worked perfect but no sound, messages him and i was told by a him to locate the "analog output" click that in settings and make sound run through it, all i could find was dummy output ( i think its called ), i researched it and found its because it was bugged so to sort it out i needed to uninstall and reinstall so i followed some guys code and did that.. It said the install was successful in the control panel type thing. but on restart i get a blank screen.. Like my monitor isn't working! " i used this method http://itsfoss.com/fix-sound-ubuntu-1304-quick-tip/ no sure if links are allowed but i used this guys method to try and get my sound back and ended up with a blank screen after restart.
I get to the grub menu ( think its called )

I have found many post relating to blank screen but non are like the picture i posted or talk really in death tech talk which i don't understand.. I think in the grub menu i need to change something but I'm confused
I believe its when you reinstall stuff that it makes the monitor not work?? Could this be the case?? If so can you help??
Ps sorry if i posted in wrong section i am a total newb so please forgive me
And no in death tech talk, try keep it simple
Thanks commando.
Ps if you want me to explain things further please say. I'm not computer literate sorry but i will do my best.
Running Xubuntu 14.10 (and out of patience). Got a Nikon Coolpix L15 and hooked it up to my Dell Optiplex 170L via a USB cord. The camera icon pops up. I double click on it and get to the photos, but then the whole thing starts bogging down and I can't copy the photos and something crashes. (Not the whole computer.) I'll attach the report. (It's in two screenshots because it didn't fit in one.)
And when it bogged it also gave me an error message window with 'One or more applications are keeping the volume busy. (PID-0)'
And I thought it was kind of treating the camera as a usb drive. When I hovered the cursor over the camera icon it showed:
'Mounted in "gphoto2://[usb:004,002]/"
and it showed:
0 bytes left (0 bytes total)
And there was four photos and a video on the camera.
I checked and was able to download the photos and video on a Windows computer, so I don't think the issue is with the camera or the files.
Because of the 'volume busy' error message I closed out everything on the computer and was still getting the same messages when I tried to transfer.
It seems close to doing it. I can highlight a photo but then it all bogs down and crashes.
Hi
I have installed Linux Mint 17 Mate. I worked very well for many many days. However, today suddenly the sound system has stopped making any sound. Linux Mint is producing any sound, whatever audio/video player I use. How can I fix it?
Update: The sound system in Mate Control Center is making sound, however VLC/MPlayer are not producing any sound. But audacious is making sound.
PS. Other OSes are producing sounds correctly.
i was suggested by a friend to use linux because my laptop was running slow. it worked fine for a few weeks but one day i turned my laptop on and i got a message that cinnamon has crashed & is running in fallback mode. i did what it suggested and tried to restart cinnamon but when i pressed the restart cinnamon icon the cursor just when back to the middle of my screen and the icon came back up again saying that cinnamon had crashed. ive searched on many forums looking for a salution to fix my problem but most of them i need to use my termenal which i cannot access.could someone please help me out with this problem. just a little heads up im not a computer programer or webpage designer
I have a Toshiba laptop that will not boot. I get to the grub menu which gives me the option to load Ubuntu, Ubuntu recovery mode, or a couple of memory tests.
If I select Ubuntu I get a black screen with a flashing cursor in the top left corner.
Selecting recovery mode gives me a lot of messages with the last one being "EDD information not available".
The memory test option does not return any errors.
If I try booting Mint from a bootable DVD I get the Mint screen and then it goes gray with a flashing cursor in the top left corner.
Any suggestions?
Hi, I am trying pulseaudio and alsa to work on chroot linux. But there's one problem, whenevr I install PulseAudio, it makes a non working virtual device by default instead of the YMU-823. So how do I get pa to change my default sound card.
Arch linux, recent installation, Thunderbird has been working well so far.
FWIW, I have Thunderbird running in two different OS's on a multiboot machine; both of them have their mail-folders and address-book entries sym-linked to a data partition, a system that has been working well for me for a year or two.
Just started happening earlier today... some of my folders I can click on, but clicking on others either just brings up a blank pane, or the mouse cursor changes to a rotating/buffering cursor, and if I move the mouse around the screen, it "whites-out" the message listing in the pane, observable in the horrible-quality video referenced below. The messages themselves don't seem to be affected, I can access the same content from another OS on the same machine. If it means anything at all, the two folders that *do* open normally when I click on them are the two folders with the smallest number of messages stored in them, but *none* of them are storing ridiculous amounts of messages. (Nor am I using more than a trivial percentage of available disk space.) The "buffering" cursor will continue indefinitely, but returns to normal when I click again on one of the two folders still acting normally.
