Making Kickstart File Available On USB Drive?

The RHEL installation guide says:

The kickstart file should be on a
separate flash memory drive to the boot media.

Why is this?

If I want to have the minimal boot media, the kickstart file and the complete installation software on the same USB drive, is it not possible?

How do I point to the kickstart file on the USB drive if it has a file system and the kickstart file is not a raw copy but a file on the file system?

Shell From URLSetup - Kickstart

I am having difficulty with booting a server via kickstart. It gets to the URL Setup stage which then fails to get the image over the network.

Not sure what is going on here but is it possible to get a shell from this step?
Once I could get this I can then troubleshoot some more...

System Partitions Over Two Drives

I have a machine with two drives a Compact Flash card (CF) and a Solid State Drive (SSD). Recently I have been experiencing failures of both the SSD and the CF.

When I sent these back to the manufacturer for analysis, they reported that the SSDs and CDs are healthy - but that it appears that the partition table has become corrupt.

Using a Kickstart I created my Linux machine with the partitions split over the CF (to hold the operating system) and the SSD (to hold my data):
/ on the CF
/boot on the CD
/usr on the CF
/home on the SSD
Would Unix have an issue with using the CF to boot and run the operating system and using the SSD to store files?
Has anyone experienced any issues of this kind?

I Am Trying To Install Mukulu Linux On A Desktop That Has XP On It .

I have followed all the instructions I have got from the net and made boot-able DVD's and USB sticks several different ways as people advise. I have done the same with Mint 17. I have created a partition (26G) and follow the install instructions 1: English 2:Has at least 7.4G available drive space. 4: Is connected to the internet. 5: Here it shows a page where I think it should display the drive options (but does not) If I push the "install now" button it comes up with an error "No root file system is defined --Please correct this from the partitioning menu" I close the installer and look at the drives in GParted and they are all there and the one I created for Linux is PARTITION - /dev/sda4 FILE SYSTEM - ext4
MOUNT POINT - /media/makulu/0C43086E0C43086E LABEL - Lin
SIZE - 26.02 GB USED - 590.07 Mb UNUSED - 24.44 GB FLAG - (blank)
No indication on how to fix the "No root file system" problem. I have tried so many bits of advise that I am beginning to think that I may be better of sticking to windows (perish the thought)
Can anyone help?

Fedora 13 In VirtualBox Help With Yum Install System-config-kickstart

hey guys, I need help with yum install system-config-kickstart.
Ive try running this in terminal with root and user. nothing seems to work.

Loaded plugins: presto, refresh-packagekit
Error: Cannot retrieve repository metadata (repomd.xml) for repository: fedora.
Please verify its path and try again.

Guys I'm new to Linux. What should I do?

Kali Thumbdrive Boot Error "Failed To Load COM32 Filename Vesamenu.c32

Using a Kingston 4GB datatraveler for drive creation
Created using amd64 1.1.0a of the Kali ISO verified from Kali.org
Drive created using Ubuntu 14.04 on a Dell Latitude E5500

dd seems to create the drive with no errors. The drive boots to the error. Hard reboot into Ubuntu to search for solution has led me to a long series of issues that I have been trying to correct.

A possible fix for the failed to load error is to copy the file to the root of the USB drive (/dev/sdb1). Drive is created with a hidden HPFS/ NTFS fs. 0x17. Changed FS to HPFS/NTS (0x07). Drive now mounts, but when attempting to copy onto drive, I get an error that the file system is read only.

I try to correct the issue using nautilus and the properties menu. It does not allow me to change the view only to read/write even though it shows me as the owner.

I think maybe a command line thing would work, or who knows what else. Maybe an fstab entry? I am continuing to search the web, and hope to work this out.

Any help would be appreciated.

Deleted Partition With Deepin On It, Now Stuck In Grub Rescue Please Help.

Hi, yesterday I decided to install Deepin in a dual boot. I later decided I no longer needed/wanted it so I deleted the partition. Apparently I had grub on that partition as well, and now my laptop only goes to grub rescue and will not boot.
I have an acer aspire v5 touch. Removing the hard drive is not an option. I have tried to access UEFI but my computer just beeps and goes to grub rescue. I have grub rescue disk on a flash drive, I used unetbootin to do that, but iI cannot get to any boot menu (f12), and when I use ls (hd0)/ I get a unknown file system error. Please help, and sorry for my grammar/formatting, I'm on mobile.
Tl;dr: Deleted partition containing grub and deepin, now can only get to grub rescue, and I keep getting an unknown file system error, please help.

Linux File Server

Hello Everyone
I have installed Ubuntu Server on a 500 GB drive formatted as EXT4.

Of of my Media, movies, music and pictures are from Windows PC's formatted in NTFS.
As all of the computers connecting to the server will be windows based will NTFS be fine or will I have to reformat them to work. The two media drives are 2 x 2GB Sata drives.
Could you tell me if this setup would work or will I have to reformat and and transfer the files to a new filesystem.
Also as a file server whats the best linux file system to use so it will work with windows PC's in a lan flawlessly.
Thanks for you expertise.

How To Remount Root Partition On System Booted From External Usb Drive

Hello,
I have a setup with arch linux installed on external ssd as normal (non-live) installation.
I had to do that after my main laptop was broken. I don't want to put my drive into the new hardware, so I run it as external one for until the main will be repaired.

It boots as usual, everything is working fine until the usb drive reconnects for some reason (may be the physical connection problem). It probably mounts itself as read-only, the system freaks out and dies slowly from I/O errors process by process. I cannot issue commands from shell, even reboot. I have to physically reset the machine.

Is there a way to change its behaviour to auto remount as rw after reconnecting the USB and just keep running as usual?

I think the fstab is the file that i should modify, but cannot find a way how to do it properly. Please correct me if I'm wrong. My current fstab:
Code:
#
# /etc/fstab: static file system information
#
# <file system>	<dir> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
# /dev/sdb2
UUID=145b3c51-6531-48f3-a79b-fb1ae238c7ee / ext4 rw,relatime,data=ordered 0 1

# /dev/sdb1
UUID=AFC4-6899 /boot vfat rw,relatime,fmask=0022,dmask=0022,codepage=437,iocharset=iso8859-1,shortname=mixed,errors=remount-ro 0 2

.tar.gz 111GB Extracting Fails

Hi guys

We are trying to move Oracle applications database tier archive, that is 111GB (over Linux) to a USB external drive using cp. Though the file successfully gets transferred to the external drive, trying to extract the file from a 2nd machine always fails, saying the archive is corrupt.
We have checked the integrity of the archive using 7-zip, reporting no errors. However totally frustrated as our last few attempts were totally futile.

The interesting part is, if we do scp to transfer the file to 2nd machine, extraction doesn't fail.

Please let us know, how we can successfully move this archive to the 2nd machine which is at a remote location and no possibilities of setting up a FTP for such a huge size file.

Both the source and destination Linux distros are RHEL 5 Enterprise, 64Bit, ext3 file systems.
