I have just switched over from DVI to HDMI on a new monitor. I would like to feed the audio out over HDMI. Currently I get no audio over HDMI. Is there a setting to enable this? I am running Debian Wheezy with XFCE.

The sound isn't working on my debian live usb.
I've installed pavucontrol hoping that this would turn on the sound somehow. But it hasn't.
The program is showing RS880 HDMI audio [Radeon HD 4200] as my output device.
The play back bar moves when I play video on youtube but there is no sound.
On the configuration tab, I've tried all the options under 'built-in audio' - but none of these seem to work.

Not sure why there appears to be two sound cards...
On a Ubuntu site about a similar problem with the same sound card, they suggest creating /etc/asound.conf and adding code to it http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1647400
However, at this point, I'm a bit lost.
Can someone help please?
I tried setting my FiiO-Dac as default alsa sound device using changes in my alsa.conf, but after a reboot, alsa always went back to my broken onboard sound. Help would be appreciated.

Hi I a running Ubunto 12.04 on a HP PC with an onboard intel analaog sound card
(ALC662) and a HDMI connection into my TV.
I use this PC for Mythtv and Kodi using the sound over HDMI which works a treat in MythTV however I cannot get the sound to work on Kodi, Firefox or any other app which I presume is down to misconfigured ALSA setup, I had this working previously but it stopped and I am not sure why, possible updates.

I installed an ATI card into my pc, now the sound is gone. I suppose this is due to the position of that new card which is now "0" (when I start alsamixer, I see the sound default is "HD-Audio Generic" with "Chip: ATI R6xx HDMI". I dont have a screen on the HDMI. I just want to take the "Intel ICH6" with "Chip: Analog Devices AD1981B" as the default card as per previous installation.
What should I do?

I have installed a new Debian OS to try out the xfce desktop.
My radeon hdmi sound card needs non-free drivers and so I have no sound.
On my previous debian install with gnome desktop, I found a number of changes I had to make to get the sound working.
I have done all this with this new install with xfce.
However, one thing I haven't done yet is to change the System settings-Sound settings to use the hdmi sound card.
The problem is the xfce desktop doesn't have an icon for sound settings under System settings.
This is a bit weird. So I'm wondering if xfce has installed correctly or if it's missing a package so the System sound settings will show up.
Does anyone know what's going on?
Does anyone know of a USB to HDMI adapter for Linux? Amazon.com only seems to have them for Windows and Mac. Or would they work with Linux also? None of my old laptops have an HDMI port. I'd like to know before I spend the money for one. Thanks much for any help you can give me! -Ed
I just installed Debian 8 on a new ASUS z87-a and most things work fine right out of the box. However even though DVI and regular sound output work fine, I tried the HDMI connection but I have no sound and the image is just a blue screen. I tried also the sound optical output and got no sound either. Is there some special drivers that need to be installed for HDMI and SPDIF to work?

I have linux mint 17.1 cinnamon installed on my computer, but the surround sound is not working (I only get stereo from two speakers)
When I run lspci I can see that my card is called
C-Media Electronics Inc CMI8738/CMI8768 PCI Audio (rev 10)
there is another embeded card that came with my computer called
[AMD/ATI] Trinity HDMI Audio Controller
but I have my speakers hooked up to the first one and I have selected this card in the "output device" option on the lower right hand side of the screen, and I have selected the sound setting "analgog 4.0 surround".
My surround sound used to work when I had windows xp and xubuntu installed on an older computer with the same surround sound card attached. So I can't understand why it is not working now.
Can anyone help me with this?

I want to connect my laptop to the TV to view sports etc. but when I plug in the HDMI cable nothing happens, the program just continues on the laptop. I am using Xubuntu and am completely new to Linux
Hello guys thanks for helping. I solved the problem by going to Display in Settings and selecting "Configure new displays on connecting". This enabled the TV when I plugged in the HDMI cable. Thanks again. Liam

I have just installed debian stable non-free onto my hard drive but the sound isn't working.
I've been to the debian site https://wiki.debian.org/SoundConfiguration and found that 'users' don't automatically have access to audio (for security reasons).
So I did the following command as root (sudo):

Now when I am 'user', I can get sound.
I also did:

adduser USER_ID cdrom
This allows 'user' to get sound from the cdrom.

So I have 2 sound cards.
The debian website says: 'If sound does not work for root account as well, then that means that either your sound card is not supported by Debian or it was not configured properly'.
Ok, so the first part of the statement is worrying.
So I went to the debian device driver check page http://kmuto.jp/debian/hcl/ and did 'lspci -n'.
The output can be pasted onto their web page and debian will say if the sound cards are supported.
The web page shows that the sound cards are supported:
