I'm pretty new to Linux and I wanted to start off by getting familiar with it. I wanted to set my vpn up, but I'm having a lot of trouble. I'm not that familiar with installing things from the terminal. Would anyone be able to help me through getting OpenVPN installed and running?
What I have here is a Dell Optiplex GX620 (stock) with a new install of Xubuntu as of May 18. It works fine except that I am having trouble printing.
The printer is an HP Deskjet 832c hooked to a Linksys BEFW11P1. The Linksys box is an old internet router/firewall/wi-fi/printserver. I am using it as a network printserver with all the other functions disabled. It's a strange setup for sure. But, over there I have another computer running Lucid Puppy 5.3.2 and it prints just fine.
This machine running Xubuntu only will print the simplest of documents. The printer setup will print a test page, Text files will print, AbiWord files will print, PDF files and HTML pages displayed in Firefox do not print.
I have been taking some stabs at trying to fix this problem by changing some settings. but no joy.
Has anyone seen an issue like this? Any pointers/ideas on where to actually look for the problem.
It seems to me that Xubuntu does not use CUPS to manage it's printers? True? Would installing CUPS be a good idea?
Thanks
I am a new user of scientific linux 6 .
I am working on a project started by others and Unfortunatly , the GUI stopped working.
I need to find out how to trouble shoot the GUI to solve the problem .
What I have now When I open my PC is a complete black terminal .
I need to go back to the GUI and start troubleshooting.
Can somebody advice me how to start ?
Thanks
Hi everyone.
Earlier I posted a reply on a thread about a problem with partitions while installing Elementary OS Freya as dual-boot, and yancek answered giving me a link with a tutorial (thank you!).
However, after I continue with the installation it stopped with an error saying that grub wasn't installed, something like that. But when I start my computer (with USB boot priority), pops a window with the option to 'Try Elementary..." and "Install Elementary..." and if I press Esc a grub console appears. Doesn't that mean grub is installed? What should I do to fix this?
Best regards,
a Linux amateur
I'm looking for a GUI version to start on. I've used Windows for many years and have gotten used to it so I would prefer something that has a feel like Windows but would allow me to learn to use Linux. Also appreciated would be a link to a good, free anti-virus app to go with it.
I tried Mandrake in the past with no success. Although it has a GIU front end, after installing programs, I could find no way to see the files that had been installed or even a list of executable programs (similar to the Windoze Start button).
It just seemed to me that it was saying told me, this is your disk data area, everything else is off limits. It's my disk, it doesn't belong to the writers of the OS, therefore, I should have access to ALL areas of it. I had that row with Windows telling me the Program Files folder was off limits to me, even when I upgraded my login profile to Administrator.
I want to to learn how to use it and how the OS structures it's own data areas so I'd want some way to access those areas of the disk as well, similar to accessing the system folders in Windows to learn how things work.
Mandrake seemed OK at first but then it was like the GUI was a door but either side of it was a completely alien landscape. The only familiar thing was the door itself. I'm looking for a windows type feel at the front end so I have familiar ground to work from with the alien landscape on the outside of the door only.
Thanks.
Hi,
This may be silly but (paranoid as I am) I do find this strange, my laptop (Xubuntu) had an update earlier, and as I wanted to shutdown, the system wanted an authentication, I hit cancel and the system logged me out, I logged back in and did not have to authenticate anymore to shutdown...glitch or..."trouble"?
Thanks
Thor
PS - I ran RKhunter and it found nothing...
i am very new to linux but i wanted to try it out, my main windows drive is tiny so i decided to format my usb hard drive and use that, first i tried to install ubuntu but i got a normal.mod not found error, so after some reserch and a grub reinstallation it booted once,
the next day however i got another error so i decided to switch to mint to see if it would work any better, but i'm still getting the normal.mod not found error.
i've tried a whole bunch of things like reinstalling mint and grub, boot repair, but nothing works, i'm kinda frustrated because i know it works because it booted up before but i just can't figure out how to fix it.
I've just installed Arch, and Installed and configured openbox and gnome terminal. Openbox starts, firefox works, but when I try to start gnome terminal, I curser spins for a moment and then it doesnt load.
I've tried to find a resolution to this but I'm not seeing much relevant to this specific scenerio. Also, this is my first time ever installing Arch, or any distro without a graphic installer or a kickstart script. My experience is pretty basic. I've used ubuntu/mint/centos for quite a while but figured this will be a good way to get me learning.
After I post this I am going to reboot to get back to command line and look at the installation and maybe install another terminal and see if this makes much a difference.
I just asked a question about Xubuntu and things are a little clearer now. But when I go to install new software or apps is the only thing that will work with Xubuntu something that says it's compatible with xfce?
I don't think that's the case, because I remember installing stuff like the text editor Kate that was more like other things than xfce but it works great anyway.
But what would be really helpful would be if someone could give me a list of the different kinds (I don't even know what they're called but the software programs or apps say things like 'works with KDE or Debian or GTK2 etc.') of things that will work with Xubuntu.
Thanks.
Hello, I'm new here and I want to start learning and getting into linux but my main problem is that I can't seem to be able to install Kubunto 15.04 onto my desktop from a live usb. I'm using a usb because I don't have a cd drive. I've tried installing some different linux distros before and didn't get them to work either. I can post the specs and info of my desktop if needed but they seem to be in working order and I don't think its a hardware problem. I used LiveUSB Creator to make my usb and I put the 15.04 Kunbunto iso file into it. I tried turning off UEFI but I'm not exactly sure what that is anyway. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!
Here is a photo of what happens after I turn on my desktop and it passes the beep test:

Also, if I have broken any forum rules or if you have any advice on how to make my posts better please let me know.
I always thought dual booting was a very complicated thing: partitions, swaps, etc. But I was just installing Xubuntu 15.04 on a Windows computer and it gave me the option to install my Xubuntu next to the Windows. That's dual booting then, right?
And is that cool to do or should I choose the custom choice (I clicked on it to check it out and it looked mega complicated)?
