Installing Nvidia Proprietary Driver 343 On Ubuntu (Unity)/Linux Mint (Cinnamon) X64

Hey guys. So I just went out and bought a Sager 8268-s (clevo p150sm-a) With an i7 4910mq and a Nvidia 980m gt. As I am a computer tech by trade, every time i see Windows i get horrible PTSD so i decided to try Linux instead. After many hours of trying to get a dual boot working finally got Linux Mint 17 Cinnamon installed on my computer, but when I went to install the Nvidia driver it landed me in fallback mode which I could not escape. So then I tried Ubuntu 14.04 LTS thinking maybe Mint was incompatible with the driver and the same thing happened.

So here is my method:

(sorry i don't know how to make a code box :/ )

First I log in to get root access:

$ su

Then I Update the xorg:

$ sudo apt-add-repository ppa:xorg-edgers/ppa

Then update my system:

$ sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Then i go into Virtual terminal (Ctrl+Alt+F1) and disable the display manager:

$ sudo service mdm (or lightdm for Ubuntu) stop

Then i install the drivers which i have done multiple ways:

$ sudo apt-get install nvidia-current nvidia-settings

or

$ sudo apt-get install nvidia-343 nvidia-settings

or by downloading the driver from Nvidia (first designating the file as executable)

$ sudo sh nvidia.run && sudo apt-get install nvidia-settings

Then after install, I create the config file:

$ sudo nvidia-xconfig

Then I reboot. After I get the low res mode in Ubuntu or fallback mode in Mint and Driver manager doesn't detect any proprietary drivers and I have to reinstall to get the OS working again. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Copy Encrypted Compact Flash Issues With Dd In Ubuntu

Hello, I have a system that uses a compact flash with a windows os and some other files on it, also somewhere is some sort of encrypted licensing information. I have several of these machines and can use the cf from the others just fine in this machine. But when I take one of those cards and try to copy it with dd, somehow the machine can tell the difference. It's nothing illegal, it's just too old to buy the replacement. Someone has told me they copied successfully in linux with the dd command, but mine aren't working. I also can't tell the brand or type of cf since all the labels have been removed. All i know is that it's a 256mb card. So is there any other options besides dd, or is there a deeper level of dd that i can use to copy this info. I'm using something like:

sudo dd if=/dev/sde of=/home/folder/cfcard

then to copy from my hard drive to the blank cf:

sudo dd if=/home/folder/cfcard of=/dev/sde

I'm using a usb cf reader, and when i have my finished cf everything looks good. Even the machine can read it, it just gives me an error that the cf card isn't a licensed or corrupted.

Borked Ubuntu With Putty SSH Cmd Line

I am not sure what happened here, and I find it oddly disturbing that a Putty session from Window could do this, but here is what I did -

I was attempting to open a ssh redirect session from Putty command line on my W7 work PC to my home PC running Ubuntu 14.04. I've done this before with the Putty GUI and had no issues at all, but this time I was using cmd line and it never did connect. I ran this command:
Code:
putty -ssh -D 1080 -P 22 domain.com

The Putty window opened but never connected. I tried twice and when it didn't connect, I gave up and went back to the GUI. I connected with the GUI just fine, but after connecting an SSH session to my Ubuntu server at home, I noticed it was acting odd.

Long story short: It was in a "read-only" mode, saying the file system was read-only. I couldn't run apt-get update or even create a new folder in my Home folder or desktop. I remotely rebooted the machine and it never came back online.

When I got home I checked it, and it told me that Ubuntu had found some errors, and was asking if I wanted to correct them. I said yes and it took a short while, but then finally let me log back in.

After this, the box is about 90-95% back to normal except for a couple of odd things that I don't understand.

The main issue is that my Samba shared drives are no longer working. The fstab file looks the same and can connect to other machines, but nothing can connect back to the Ubuntu box. The folder permissions are correct also. I have a CentOS7 box, a Fedora laptop and a W7 box - none of them can connect to my Ubuntu box. I only run Samba and connect with it, even from Linux boxes, just to make it simple (since Windows is stupid and can't use NFS) - this has always worked in the past. Now for the life of me, I can't figure out why nothing will connect.

Is there a logfile or trouble-shooter I could look at it see what happened? It should be in /var/log somewhere, but I don't know where to start. SSH? Samba? The entire filesystem was read-only for a short while, so is there a FS or System log in /var/log?

I am kinda confused on this one, any help is appreciated.

Topic - What Is Linux Kernel And How To Upgrade To Linux Stable Kernel 3.18.1

What Is Linux Kernel?

Those who don't know what is the Linux Kernel they should know it because Linux kernel is the essential part of any Linux operating system. It is responsible for resource allocation, low-level hardware interfaces, security, simple communications, basic file system management, and more. Written from scratch by Linus Torvalds (with help from various developers), Linux is a clone of the UNIX operating system. It is geared towards POSIX and Single UNIX Specification compliances.

Latest Stable Linux Kernel Version 3.18.1
It's been a quiet week, and the patch from rc7 is tiny, so 3.18 is out.
I'd love to say that we've figured out the problem that plagues 3.17 for a couple of people, but we haven't. At the same time, there's absolutely no point in having everybody else twiddling their thumbs when a couple of people are actively trying to bisect an older issue, so holding up the release just didn't make sense. Especially since
that would just have then held things up entirely over the holiday break.
So the merge window for 3.19 is open, and DaveJ will hopefully get his bisection done (or at least narrow things down sufficiently that we have that "Ahaa" moment) over the next week. But in solidarity with Dave (and to make my life easier too let's try to avoid introducing any _new_ nasty issues, ok?]

Ubuntu Will Not Dual Boot Beside Windows 7--error Codes

I have windows 7 laptop, Dell. I downloaded the newest edition of Ubuntu (Twice)to see if it would install and dual boot beside Windows 7. Unsucessful on several attempts. I decide on Ubuntu it starts to boot into Ubuntu than a black screen with all types of Kernel error codes that i'm unfamilur with. one is---(1.292618) kernel panic-not syncing: no working init found.

Ubuntu 15.04 Vivid, Fresh Install. What Is Default Sound System?

Hi,

Although I've been using linux several years back. I am not a fast learner so here goes a question I should understand long ago.

I have installed fresh Ubuntu 15.04 netinstall.

After that install xorg and windows manager.
Sound was working.
Then I wanted to check the mixer and I used to alsamixer, and strange the app was not there.
I have tried all alsa* binaries but none of them was installed.

How can I findout what sound system is running?

Thanks

VAIO SVS1311... SteamOS Install.

Hello there! I'm completely new to linux; I've used ubuntu and other distributions but just at user level.
The problem is, I've got a Sony laptop with the inside H2O (3.9) BIOS, don't have the complete specs right now, but i can check them when i'm back at home. It has a NVIDIA 640M LE, 8gb ram, an Intel Core I7 processor, and a 750gb HD.
The screen, although working well enough, is broken, some plastic parts are broken also and it's not in good condition overall. It worked well in every aspect aside from those.
As i have a desktop, computer to work already, I don't need the laptop for working anymore, so I thought it could be a good idea to use it as an entertainment center in the living room, you know, for watching movies, playing some old-school games in local coop with and without emulators and so on.

I thought the still in beta SteamOS (Think it's a Debian-based distro) could be a nice option, so I've installed it. The installation process ran without issues till the first reboot; after that i only get "operating system not found" error and nothing else.
I unplugged the HD and made a complete installation from scrap with every reboot needed in my desktop computer and everything worked out fine: installing games, browsing the web, playing music, etc.
But, after plugging again the HD with the OS installed in the laptop I still get the same error; operating system not found.

Any ideas of how to solve it? Thank you in advance, and sorry about my english
