New Problem With Aliases

I have many .bashrc aliases. When I used to type in an alias, it just executed the alias. Now something has changed. When I type in the alias, it prints the alias lines and then executes the commands:

alias cde='cd /etc/ && ls --color -a' #get to /etc

root@me~# cde
cd /etc/
ls --color -a
...into /etc and list of folders/files follows...

How can I stop the

cd /etc/
ls --color -a

from being displayed?

Thanks.

Problem With .bashrc Entry

I need to execute this .bashrc string:

alias lml='grep '[0-9]\{1,3\}\.[0-9]\{1,3\}\.[0-9]\{1,3\}\.[0-9]\{1,3\}' mail.log | grep "relay=" | awk '{print $8}'' #list mail log

I have tried enclosing the string in alias as lml="..." and alias lml=`...` to no avail. The problem is apparently with the grep "relay=" in that it has to be enclosed in "", as well as the awk that has to be enclosed in ''.

Any ideas on how to get this setup? Thanks.

The Behaviour Of Single & Double Quotes In Writing & Running Aliases?

This isn't a problem, more a how or a why:

I have always written an alias (alias ln="ln -sv") which changes the instruction for a "hard" link into one for a "soft". This worked fine until I needed a hard link, so, as part of the alias, I decided to give myself a reminder of what I was doing. After a bit of a struggle, I ended up with this (which I stuffed into my .bash_aliases file):

alias ln="echo -e 'Symbolic (soft) Link (use \033[1;36mhln\033[0m for Hard Link)\nuse \033[1;36m-f\033[0m for force'; ln -sv "

and it works:

Symbolic (soft) Link (use hln for Hard Link )
use -f for force
ln: missing file operand
Try 'ln --help' for more information.

(OK, no operand was supplied here, but the stuff we're talking about works fine).

Recently, however, I needed to look at the construction of the alias, ran "alias ln" & got:

alias ln='echo -e '\''Symbolic (soft) Link (use \033[1;36mhln\033[0m for Hard Link)\nuse \033[1;36m-f\033[0m for force'\''; ln -sv'

Now, I can (sort of) understand the logic of what's going on here, but not entirely - viz:

..1...'...............Open 'protected' mode (was double quote)
........echo -e....Command: invoke "echo -e"
..2...'...............matches 1: Closes 'protected' mode
........\.............invoke newline(\)? Or is this simply an scape character? (Yes it is see http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...-quote-861714/)
..3...'...............Reopen 'protected' mode (or an escaped single quote - if so why?)
..4...'...............0pens 'protected' mode for "message" code
........Symbolic (soft) Link (use \033[1;36mhln\033[0m for Hard
........Link)\nuse \033[1;36m-f\033[0m for force
..5...'...............5 matches 4 (closes message code),
........\.............invoke newline(\) - or see above
..6...'...............6 matches 3 & closes the section started @ 'reopen'
..7...'...............Reopens 'protected' mode
........; ln -sv......New command[ ; ], creates link
..8...'...............8 matches 7 - the end (or is it?)

I would guess that the "alias" command has some built built in function that does all this - I have saved the the modified version as an alias & it works fine - but although I have read the excellent post:

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...-quote-861714/

I don't understand why the system has both double & single quotes. I have always felt that as long as the command line was explained & demonstrated in simple language it was easier to work with that than any point & click system. I grew up with CPM, DOS, Qemm, Desqview, WP5.1, DbII and these were great programs with great (especially WP51) manuals - but, ahh! - those days have gone

Any suggestions gratefully received

.profile And Bash.rc

hi guys

i was taught that /etc/profile was global for environmental variables and settings...and ~/.profile was specific to the user...

and that bash.rc and ~/.bash.rc was for aliases and functions...i was trying to setup a permanent alias in my profile to a common ssh command and read that it should be going into .profile??? is it really not strict or just a rule of thumb?

How To Handle Parameters In A .bashrc Function

I want to create a simple bash function (in .bashrc) that takes in one parameter (a directory name) and tars all the files inside of that directory into a specific directory in /home (we'll call that destdir). The name of the tar should be the same as the directory parameter.

For example, I want to be able to type into the terminal "task directory_name".

I tried this but it didn't work:

Code:
function_name() {
   cd $1
   tar czf /~/destdir/$1.tar *

   return 0
}
alias task=function_name

What am I doing wrong?

Sendmail Alias Not Working

I'm trying to send all root's mails to an external e-mailaddress, but for some reason I can't get it to work.

I've edited /etc/aliases with the following rule:

root: <myexternal@email.address>

and run newaliasses after, which would run without any errors.

I can run: echo "Testing" | mail -s "Server Testing" <myexternal@email.address>
just fine without any issue and it's being delivered correctly to my external address.

But when I run: echo "Testing" | mail -s "Server Testing" root

I (first) get a "Deferred: 451 Temporary local problem - please try again later" error and when I then run: "Sendmail -OTimeout.hoststatus=0m -q -v" to flush the mailqueue it says everything is ok, but I then get a message saying I have new mail in /var/spool/mail/root and I don't get the mail on my external e-mailaddress.

I have no clue where to look next, hopefully you guys can point me in the right direction.

Just for completeness: I use mageia release 4 (x86_x64).

Termite Configuration Problem

i'm setting up arch linux and trying to get a workable interface to mess around with my configuration files and the like. i got bspwm working with bar and sxhkd works fine to open termite or firefox/vimperator for starters. i set up ~/.config/termite/config for both root and my user the best i could based on the information available on the 'net. the fg/bg colors seem to have changed, but all my other colors are just default like in the login shell, when all my colorn = #digits options are obviously all blue-hued.

~/.config/termite/config:
Code:
[options]
resize_grip = false
scroll_on_output = true
scroll_on_keystroke = true
audible_bell = true
visible_bell = false
mouse_autohide = true
dynamic_title = true
urgent_on_bell = true
clickable_url = true
scrollback_lines = 1024
icon_name = terminal
transparency = 1.7
pseudo_transparency = false
cursor_blink = system
cursor_shape = block
padding = 2
border_width = 0.5
roundness = 2.0
browser = firefox
font = Terminus 12
foreground = #9999ff
background = rgba(33, 33, 66, 0.6)
hilight = #333366
color0 = #333366
color8 = #333399
color1 = #6666cc
color9 = #9999ff
color2 = #0099cc
color10 = #00ccff
color3 = #3366cc
color11 = #6699ff
color4 = #006699
color12 = #0099cc
color5 = #0066ff
color13 = #0099ff
color6 = #669999
color14 = #66cccc
color7 = #99cccc
color15 = #ccffff

i'm still having trouble getting around and figuring out to ex. copy from vim to vimperator and stuff so i'll add any of my dotfiles if anyone thinks they'll help.

edit: i also made zsh my default shell on all of my accounts. this is the global zshrc in /etc/zsh/zshrc:

Code:
autoload -U run-help
autoload run-help-git
autoload run-help-svn
autoload run-help-svk
unalias run-help
alias help=run-help

setopt HIST_IGNORE_DUPS

export LC_ALL=en_US.UTF-8
export LANG=en_US.UTF-8
export LANGUAGE=en_US.UTF-8
export EDITOR="vim"
export SXHKD_SHELL=$(which sh)

eval $(dircolors ~/.dircolors)

alias ls="ls -a --color"

autoload -U colors && colors

PROMPT="{$fg_no_bold[green]%}%# %{$reset_color%}"
RPROMPT="%{$fg_no_bold[blue]%}%~%{$reset_color%}"

Permission Denied For PhpMyAdmin

Hi,

On Centos 7 I haven't been able to configure phpmyadmin. I've got Apache 2.4.6 and I've installed the latest phpmyadmin, both with yum.
I've changed all the 127.0.0.1 to my public ip and I've disabled the 'denied all' directives. This is how it looks:
Code:
Alias /phpMyAdmin /usr/share/phpMyAdmin
Alias /phpmyadmin /usr/share/phpMyAdmin

<Directory /usr/share/phpMyAdmin/>
   AddDefaultCharset UTF-8

   <IfModule mod_authz_core.c>
     # Apache 2.4
     <RequireAny>
       Require ip X.X.X.X
       Require ip ::1
     </RequireAny>
   </IfModule>
   <IfModule !mod_authz_core.c>
     # Apache 2.2
     Order Deny,Allow
     #Deny from All
     Allow from X.X.X.X
     Allow from ::1
   </IfModule>
</Directory>

<Directory /usr/share/phpMyAdmin/setup/>
   <IfModule mod_authz_core.c>
     # Apache 2.4
     <RequireAny>
       Require ip X.X.X.X
       Require ip ::1
     </RequireAny>
   </IfModule>
   <IfModule !mod_authz_core.c>
     # Apache 2.2
     Order Deny,Allow
     #Deny from All
     Allow from X.X.X.X
     Allow from ::1
</IfModule>
</Directory>

# These directories do not require access over HTTP - taken from the original
# phpMyAdmin upstream tarball
#
<Directory /usr/share/phpMyAdmin/libraries/>
    Order Deny,Allow
    #Deny from All
    Allow from All
</Directory>

<Directory /usr/share/phpMyAdmin/setup/lib/>
    Order Deny,Allow
    #Deny from All
    Allow from All
</Directory>

<Directory /usr/share/phpMyAdmin/setup/frames/>
    Order Deny,Allow
    #Deny from All
    #Allow from None
    Allow from All
</Directory>

on /var/log/httpd/error_log:
Code:
AH01630: client denied by server configuration: /usr/share/phpMyAdmin

The httpd.conf hasn't been changed except this:
Code:
<Directory />
    AllowOverride none
    #Require all denied
    Allow from all
</Directory>

Normal access to my apache works fine (a default test page shows up)

SELinux is disabled and I've also stopped iptables to test it.

How To Color Different Lines In Gnuplot

Hi there. My environment is Ubuntu 12.04 OS. I have an example of the files I create with gfortran and gnuplot. The gnuplot draws this picture from a data file with 2D Cartesian coordinates. It is perpective projection. I need to color some parts of the plot (various lines) in different colors because some other details must also be drawn and I feel that the resulting network will be confusing. Gnuplot user manuals treat this subject but only in conjunction with lines drawn through a formula like sin(x), etc. I don't have that. All I have is columns of floating point numbers. Is there way I can draw lines of different color with gnuplot 4.6?

Thanks, - A.

RHEL Changed The W Default Options In 7!!! Is There A Way To Get Them Back?

RHEL changed the w default options in 7!!! (or at least Centos did) Is there a way to get them back?

In particular the -f flag is gone now as a default option, to show the IP, of the person connecting.

Which means instead of a simple 1 letter:
Code:
w

You have to do:
Code:
w -f

or Code:
finger

If there an easy way to add that option back as a default option? (Other than making an alias).

Changing User Name Slight Hangup

hi-

Today I switched my linux username and changed to /home/newname. I am doing this because it is not secure to broadcast your username to the world.

At this link:

http://askubuntu.com/questions/34074...ge-my-username

I am wondering if there is a way to do it a little better for me.

Quote:
You can either keep a symlink for backward compatibility, e g ln -s /home/newname /home/oldname or you can change the file contents with sed -i.bak 's/*oldname*/*newname*/g' *list of files* It creates a backup for each file with a .bak extension.
I tried to do a symlink.

It is not working exactly the way I had hoped. I may not understand it.

When I do the command ls -l I had to make an alias command with awk to parse out the user when i display it. That isn't a big deal but I noticed the oldname and newname are in the printout before filtering it with awk.

Also, my old home directory (the one that matches my /home/oldname is not deleted).

I can log in and the desktop looks fine. I indeed have a new /home/newname.

At one point can I delete the /home/oldname.

Is it okay that ls -l is picking up both usernames (new and old) in separate columns?

I wanted to bounce this off a more experienced user to see if there are some minor adjustments I can do to improve not having 2 home directories and if it is okay for ls -l to display both the old and new user name.

thanks!
