Difference Between Udev And Udevadm

Hi. I am relatively new to linux systems. I recently jumped on an endeavor to install a vanilla kernel (3.18.5) from the kernel website. Its Documentation/Changes file mentions the minimum version requirements of the packages needed. For udev, it mentioned Code:
udevd --version

to check the version number. But looking around I found for Fedora its Code:
udevadm --version

(I'm using Fedora Workstation 21 64-bit). Is there any fundamental difference between these two utilities? Any explanation would be helpful.

How To Determine If Syntax Array=( Str1 Str2 Str3 ) To Declare Array Is Valid

Hi, I am creating a Korn shell script and need to create an array where each element corresponds to one line of an input file. Being able to do the following would be awesome: Code:
array=( $(cat file.txt) )

However, I'm finding that not all of my development boxes allow this. Some return this: Code:
ksh: syntax error: `(' unexpected

I suspect this has something to do with the Korn shell version. Does anyone know how I can find out what version is required in order to be able to declare arrays, as above? Or is this an OS version issue?

I would really appreciate any tips on how I can find out the minimum requirements for this syntax to be valid.

Thanks.

Question For U-boot Env Value.

Dear Sir.

U-boot version : 2015.01

I'm setting some env value. for example see below.

Code:
U-boot > printenv
serial_number=abcdefg

I'm want to "serial_number" pass to kernel cmdline.
So, I'm make a "bootargs" env value. see below.

Code:
U-boot > printenv
bootargs='console=ttyS0,115200 board_serial=${serial_number}'

But, i was failed that env serial_number pass to kernel.

Code:
Built 1 zonelists in Zone order, mobility grouping on. Total pages: 32512
Kernel command line: console=ttyS0,115200 board_serial={serial_number}

How can u-boot env variable pass to kernel?

Thank you.

Headless Libreoffice Doesn't Create File

I am trying to convert a PDF document from an Excel and PowerPoint document. I installed it and ran the command. It gives no warning.. Just doesn't create a new PDF document. I've successfully done this before, but I think it was a different server. I've checked file permissions, but don't think it is the issue (I've tried as a normal user and as root).

I could convert doc, docx, and txt files, but not xls, xlsx, ppt, and pptx files.

Thoughts why? Is there a verbose option or a log file which I could check for clues?

Thank you

Configuring A Dual Boot Arch And Fedora Installation

I have setup a dual boot system with Fedora 21 and Arch Linux. The problem is that Fedora doesn't see my encrypted Arch installation. The installations are on separate partitions and do not share anything apart from hard disk space. I have run the following commands as root in Fedora:

Code:
grub2-install /dev/sda

Code:
os-prober

Code:
grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub2/grub.cfg

When I rebooted, Fedora was the only OS entry showing in the GRUB menu.

There was a suggestion from one of the members of the Arch forums that I should write the entry myself into /etc/grub.d/40_custom and then re-build the grub configuration or take the Arch entry from Arch's /boot/grub/grub.cfg and just paste it into the 40_custom in Fedora and rebuild.

How do I boot from a live Arch USB stick into the installed Arch and do as stated above? How would it work? Thanks in advance for your replies.

Error After Running Yum Update - Black Screen

Can you guys advise on how to resolve this? We have a machine (RHEL 6 32bit 2.6.32-504.8.1.el6.i686) that boots to a black screen. I can SSH into it from my machine, but when you're physically at the machine it just displays a black screen.

I have tried booting from the previous 2 kernels, but still get the black screen.

I am assuming something got hosed with the video stuff? Its an ATI Radeon 4000series card. Should I install the ATI driver from their website and try? We have never had to do that with these machines though.

Also, when running a yum update, we receive this error. I'm not sure how to resolve this and if resolving this will fix the video issues.

Ubuntu Directories

Hi there. I have Ubuntu 14.04 installed. Actually I have been doing a lot of work in this OS for about a year. The thing I cannot still comprehend is how to find files I installed. In this particular case I need glut.h for g++ compiler. So I go here, do this command;

Code:
sudo apt-get install freeglut3-dev

And find out that I already have the newest version (which I have suspected since I recall installing it).

So, the next step is to find the glut.h file and reference it with #include command. I cannot find it anywhere. This website says it has to be he

Code:
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libglut*

Why's the asterisk? Is it a footnote or part of the code?

I don't seem to have /usr/ directory. I cannot find it anywhere.

How does Ubuntu directory work?

Thanks, - A.

Manually Downgrading Bash & GCC

Hi all,

I have a strange request. I have a system running Fedora 21. This system is now not connected to the internet (for security reasons).

I have used the " yum downgrade bash " command to revert back to version 4.3.30, but I am still receiving compilation errors in some code (which I have rescued from a Fedora Core 4 installation [don't ask!!]).

Is it possible to download the source for Bash version 3, compile and install it to test it on my Fedora 21 installation?

If so, could someone help me please, as this is something I have never tried before?

Thanks in advance for any help.
