Strip Last Lines Off Pipe

I have a datastream going through a pipe, and I need to strip-out (remove) the last 3 lines (trailer) from that stream so that it doesn't go down to the next command in the stream.
ive tried combinations of head/tail, but that all assumes you know ahead of time how many lines are in the stream to begin with...

Problem With CUPS Printing.

Hello,

I have cups 1.7 set up. And have a printer LaserJet P1606DN configured. But with one user, every morning the first printing gets errror "Unable to write print data: Broken pipe". After that printing works fine. Printer is set with maximum sleep time "after 1 hour".

Any ideas, what to check?

Problems After Cloning VM To Physical HD

I just cloned a Centos7 "everything install" VM to a physical disk using VMWare Workstation and Clonezilla using the instructions he https://www.howtoforge.com/convertin...cal-machine-p2

Now, when the clone (physical disk) boots up, it drops into the command line with this:

Quote:
dracut-initqueue[417]: Warning: Could not boot.
dracut-initqueue[417]: Warning: /dev/disk/by-uuid/4b8b5627-9027-46f7-b722-61d3ddd28e74 does not exist Starting dracut emergency shell...
What I've tried:
1. I checked /etc/fstab and the proper UUIDs are there, including the one above.
2. Tried booting via USB stick installer into rescue mode, chroot /mnt/sysimage , and:

Quote:
mv /boot/initramfs-$(uname -r).img /boot/initramfs-$(uname -r)-oh_crud.img
and then
Quote:
dracut /boot/initramfs-$(uname -r).img $(uname -r)
...but I get this:

Quote:
cat: write error: Broken pipe
When I enter "blkid", I see the HD in question showing up as both /dev/block... and /dev/sdb... I tried "lshw -class disk" but it says "command not found". Finally, the rescue shell says it is mounting my disk in /mnt/sysimage and all my files are where they should be, so it appears it is seeing and mounting the HD.

Any suggestions? I am a n00b, so going off a lot of google and not a lot of understanding here.

Reinstall Linuxmint Rebecca 17.1 Without Losing Personal Data, When There Is No Bckup

Hi,
I'm very new at this. This is probably to long. This is the first time I've posted a question in a forum like this. Don't know yet how to state this kind of problem concisely.
-The problem: my Linuxmint Rebecca 17.1 won't boot up. I believe I deleted an essential file from the OS and need to reinstall Rebecca. But, here's the big thing I feel desperate about. I need to do this (reinstall) without destroying (overwriting, erasing or such) all my data, and thus losing all my research and writing project files, audios and so on, my life.
-From my newbie view, very incomplete view,, here's what I think I was doing just before the catastrophe.
-I got a dialog box telling me I had twenty packages that were broken.
-I tried several things involving the update manager, which I can't remember now, to resolve the broken package thing.
-I kept getting a dialog box asking me, in effect, if I wanted to remove these broken packages, which I thought I should probably do.
However, one of these broken packages/files was labeled as an 'essential file.' And, the dialog box asked, in effect: "Are you sure you want to remove this essential file?"
Well no, of course, I didn't want to remove an essential file, so I spent an hour or so trying to get that 'essential file' off that broken package list. I couldn't find a way to do it.
Finally, super frustrated, I went ahead and removed all the broken packages, and along with those, the 'essential' file. (this was the mistake, a huge mistake on my part).
-And ta da. No more Rebecca. I exhausted every approach I know to reboot, but it wasn't going to happen. Quess the 'essential' file I removed was 'essential.' :-).
-I put Rebecca on a USB. Finally got the BIOS to boot up the Rebecca USB. So, I can run Rebecca from the USB. It looks like I could install her again on my desktop from this point. But, I don't dare, without knowing how to do so without further shooting myself in the foot.
Any direction? I would be so grateful if there was. Thanks

Quick GREP Question..

Hey guys,

Something is puzzling me!

I saw someone use the grep in the following way and I'm not sure I understand what it does, and if there's any benefit to using it this way.

Code:
grep X.X.X.X /var/log/log.log | grep -v query

I checked the man file which confirmed that -v is relating to matching non grouping lines (which I'm not sure I fully understand either!) but I don't see any difference in the output of the above command versus the same command without the | grep -v query bit..

Why would you pipe grep into grep unless you were searching for something specific within the search results?

Does query mean something else?

Using Find And Pipe To Tar

am trying to use tar in combination with find, the goal is to all files in /export that have been modified in the last 24 hours (back up purposes), then tar them so I can untar on the backup server, updating just the modified files.

Perhaps there is a better way, however, I have tried using cpio but the problem come in when I copy to the NAS drive (NTFS) I lose all my owner/group and permissions. I have found that if I tar the files, then copy them to the NAS, when I untar on the server, it will retain the owner/group and permissions.

So… here is what I have tried:

First, I use the find command to see what files should be in the tar archive.
Code:
/export $ find . -depth -mtime 0 -print
./file4
./file3
.

Ok, that looks right, now I will try to pipe that in to tar
Code:
/export $ find . -depth -mtime 0 -print0 | tar -czvf backup.tar.gz --null -T -
./file4
./file3
./
./share/
./share/pdf/
./share/pdf/penny-2014-09-03-11:41.30.pdf
./share/pdf/penny-2014-09-03-14:25.17.pdf
./share/pdf/penny-2014-09-03-11:24.36.pdf
./share/pdf/penny-2014-09-03-14:37.12.pdf
tar: ./share/pdf/.directory: Cannot open: Permission denied
./share/pdf/penny-2014-09-02-14:52.06.pdf
./share/pdf/penny-2014-09-03-12:18.43.pdf
tar: ./share/PDF: Cannot open: Permission denied
./share/file3
tar: ./share/.directory: Cannot open: Permission denied
./dir1/
./dir1/file1
./file4
./file2
./file3
tar: ./.directory: Cannot open: Permission denied
./list
tar: Exiting with failure status due to previous errors

It seems that it is trying to tar all the files in that directory. When I view the files in backup.tar.gz all of the files from /export are in there not just the modified ones

Erratic Wifi

Have had ongoing problems with wifi since I built my PC. It was like it is now when I first built it, I tried bits I found online to try and fix it and evntually it just started working out of the blue, when I hadn't changed anything. A few weeks ago it just reverted to how it was before

Very rarely it works normally, except it will only see my network (always about 60-70% strength) and not the other 3 in range
Sometimes it will say it is connected but not be able to download anything, and wont even load up the router homepage
Sometimes it connect and run for a few minutes before dropping and not being able to reconnect
Most often it will see my network and all others in range but wont connect
Sometimes it wont see my network at all, but will see others in range
Sometime network manager wont even show wireless up as an option just "nwtwork cable unplugged"

My 2 HDDs are on Mint 17.1, one is 64bit one 32bit. Motherboard is Gigabyte GA-970A-DS3P. I have 3 wifi adapters, one belkin, one realtek, and one "Think Penguin" one I bought especially from USA thinking it would be an easy fix. All have same problem, but all work on my other older PC properly with about 50-60% signal strength (same OS 32 bit)

I have no idea where to start
