In Praise Of Linux

I just wanted to post and say how incredibly impressed I am with the whole linux thing! I know you guys have been at this for a while but for someone like me to walk in cold it really is an amazing system. I just ran a full version of Ubuntu studio from my DVD player FROM A FIVE YEAR OLD DELL!!!!!!! It's free, it's incredibly fast and it still hasn't crashed... And I don't know what I'm doing so it really should crash.
I amazed that linux is not the number 1 system in the world. I will make a prediction and say that Linux is going to start to become equally as popular as the big two. It's only a matter of time.

This is not a question. I just want to say to all the programmer guys out there and all the programmers that have contributed to this system..... THANK YOU. you really have changed the world. I'm going to keep going with my exploration and keep asking annoying questions on the forum but I am proud to be a member of the Linux family. Keep it going guys. Brilliant stuff.

Which Distro For Laptop?

my question is.... do i install the same distro for a laptop as i am using on this desktop or is there a widely used laptop distro that the linux experts always use or at least on avarage use more than any other.

Good Command Prompt Linux For Beginners, But Power Users?

Hi, please excuse any misunderstanding about the title.

I'm an experienced computer user, but not with Linux. As a matter of fact, even with Windows, I only do so much at the command prompt.

I am looking for a very fast (boot and etc.) Linux system, that has nothing more than a command prompt. No X-Windows. However, I would like to configure X-Windows immediately after an installation.

I noticed the LFS project. Very cool, but way too complex for me. It is exactly what I'm looking for, except, I would like the basic system to already be proven, maybe even with security updates.

The biggest most important thing is (ONLY WHAT I WANT). I don't want dozens of browsers, a hundred text editors, or any other cool or stupid open source or commercial software. I simply am looking for what Dos 6.22 was in Linux.

There are many distros. Can you guys help me pick one out that is light, secure and ready to be configured to run X windows or X-Free or Xorg, I'm not sure what the best is right now.

PS: I'm a linux noob, but I have had several decent installations of Ubuntu, and some experience with the command line, including compiling software, but still a beginner.

I'm New To Linux & Like To Know What Version Would Be Best. I've Heard Ubuntu.

Hi, my name is Daniel & I've been considering trying out Linux. A friend of mine says he's got Linux's Ubuntu, & says he really likes it. I've got experience building computers, & Computer Networking. I've got a Desktop w/a free (empty, unformatted) 150 GB Seagate HDD, so I'd like to try using that HDD for a version of Linux. I'm running Win. 7 Ultimate on my primary drive, but I had to install the Win. 7 Ult. 32 bit disc for it to run successfully. I'm considering a dual boot system.

The System I built has an ASUS (A8N-SLI) 64 bit, Socket 939, NVidia N-Force4 Motherboard, w/an AMD, Athlon XP 4000+ 64 bit CPU. I've got 2 ASUS/NVidia G-Force N6800GT PCI Express Graphics Cards, w/256 MB DDR3 RAM each (using my SLI). I've got 2-1 GB 184 pin sticks of Corsair 3200+, 400 Mhz, CL-2 DDR-RAM. I' ve also got a Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 4 Sound System (4.1), w/internal PCI Card & external control box that runs w/Fire Wire. I've also got an Acer 24" Digital monitor, & 1 CD/DVD Burner,& 1 NEC Dual Layer DVD Burner.
I went into detail, just in case my system has something requiring a certain version of Linux. My main problem is, I don't know anything about coding, so I guess I need a version of Linux w/a robust GUI. I thank you in advance for your time & consideration. I look forward to hearing from you. -)

What's Missing In Lubuntu

In August of this year I'm going to build a dedicated linux audio computer. I have been using ubuntu studio on my cheapo dell optiplex to learn linux and to get used to different programs and see which ones I need.

Lubuntu seems to use less cpu than ubuntu studio for the same program. I don't want any other programs on my system part from ardour, jack and a few misc MP3 players. All audio. It says that ubuntu studio is a low latency program, does this mean that Lubuntu isn't low latency? It seems that Lubuntu is running the program easier but I'm nervous to go with it because I fear it may be missing certain components to keep it less needy of cpu power.
What are your thoughts on this.

Linux Company Environment AD Alternative

Hi Guys,

I'm new to this community and i just have a basic Linux knowledge especialy Ubuntu+ UbuntuServer. I'm Studying IT its my last year and im working on a thesis called "Windows Vs Linux". I'm trying to setup a virtual company environment in windows and the same in Linux. I want to compare the both... what are the pros and cons from both operating systems, stability, Security, managability, TCO,... . I did some research and stuff but for the Linux part its not easy... So i have a few questions, hopefully I'm getting some response. First of all I'm thinking of using Ubuntuserver LTS as server side OS and for the workclients Mint or ubuntu. Is this a good distro choice ?

My second and i think its the hardest part of setting up a manageable Linux Company environment is an Active directory alternative that offers the same functionality in Linux. Is this possible ? Ok you have like openlDAP and stuff but thats just basic authentication password and shit, but do you have something like GPOS for Linux ?

I'm hoping someone can help me out a bit

Grtz

What Why And Where?

Hey guys, im a long time Mac user but I want to have a Linux computer in my office for web based stuff and fixing hard drives.... I'm going to buy a used computer from eBay to install my Linux software as I believe that Linux is a lot faster than Mac or windows and doesnt need the latest hardware to compete.

In order to be at least as fast as a windows computer but no more than $100. What range of computer should I be looking at? What specs should I look for? And once I get it should I run Ubuntu or mint for web based things and hard drive repair? As you no doubt know, the Linux lingo is a bit difficult sometimes so please bear with me. I'm doing the best I can.

Weird question I know, but I'm sure you know what I mean.

Swapping Distros

Hey guys, what's the best way to try out distros? Do I completely reinstall each time I want to change a distro and if so, would nt that wipe all my data? Or does my personal data , text files etc etc stay on the system and only the distro changes?

My Linux computer comes today and it has Ubuntu installed which I believe is a very popular and stable system but I really want to check out the so evolve distro because it looks fantastic and the reviews were very favorable. BUT I was warned on this forum not to get involved with beta distros until I know what I'm doing.

Does swapping distros erase all data ?

Which Linux System?

I have a Dell Inspiron Mini 1012, which came with a Windows XP operating system. I would like to change to a Linux operating system. Which one would be best for such limited--small capacity--hardware?
