Unable To Enter Command Because Of Daemon Job On Startup

Good day

I have a application that startup as a daemon when the system boot-up. My problem is that it display that this application is running and nothing else is happening then. I am unable to enter any commands. I have tried all kind off key presses but cannot get to the prompt.

First off all why will this happen and then is there a way to get to the prompt without accessing the system with the network?

Thank you.

?? How To Auto Mount Logical Volume Before Transmission-daemon Starts At Start Up

I have been using an old computer to download my torrents and this has been my usual routine:

1. Press the power button.
2. Connect to the computer through Putty
3. Log in
4. Gain su privileges

Startup Commands:
Code:
/etc/init.d/transmission-daemon stop
apt-get update
mount -t ext4 /dev/vgTransmission/lvTransmission /mnt/transmissionVault
/etc/init.d/transmission-daemon start

Shutdown Commands:
Code:
/etc/init.d/transmission-daemon stop
umount /dev/vgTransmission/lvTransmission
shutdown -h now

I was wondering if there is a way to configure a computer to automatically mount a logical volume “before” the transmission-daemon starts at boot up (note my first Startup Command).

I think the instructions here are related to what I want to do, but I want to get some advice before I attempt to do anything dangerous:
http://tille.garrels.be/training/tld...#sect_04_02_04

My perfect scenario would be:

Startup Routine:
1. Send WakeOnLan magic packet to computer to turn it on.
2. Computer boots up, mounts the transmissionVault logical volume
3. Wait 10 seconds to ensure that the logical volume has finished mounting
4. Start transmission-daemon

Shutdown Routine:
Send WakeOnLan magic packet to turn off computer, i.e.: Execute “shutdown -h now”
The shutdown command should include:
1. Stop transmission-daemon
2. Wait 10 seconds to ensure that transmission-daemon has finished shutting down
3. Umount transmissionVault logical volume

Recently the Ethernet port of my transmission box has stopped working, so I went ahead and swapped the motherboard with another old motherboard, added a few hard drives, installed a fresh copy of Debian, and re-created the LVM logical volume for transmissionVault. I pretty much have a fairly stock system running at the moment.

How To Return From Shell 'read' Command Passed In Expect Script?

I have a shell script that calls an expect script I wrote to ssh login to another host and get user input regarding that host's network configuration. I pass four arguments to the expect script: the remote host ip address, the username, the password, and the list of commands to run. My expect script is below:

#!/usr/bin/expect
# Usage: expectssh <host> <ssh user> <ssh password> <script>

set timeout 60
set prompt "(%|#|\\$) $"
set commands [lindex $argv 3];

spawn ssh [lindex $argv 1]@[lindex $argv 0]

expect {
"*assword:" {
send -- "[lindex $argv 2]\r"
expect -re "$prompt"
send -- "$commands\r"
}

"you sure you want to continue connecting" {
send -- "yes\r"
expect "*assword:"
send -- "[lindex $argv 2]\r"
expect -re "$prompt"
send -- "$commands\r"
}

timeout {
exit }

expect -re $prompt
send -- "exit\r"
}

The script runs well, except that if I send a command such as 'read' that requires user input, the script does not continue or exit after the user presses enter. It just hangs.

The commands I pass to the expect script and it's call are as follows:
SCRIPT='hostname > response.txt;netstat -rn;read net_card?"What is the network interface card number? " >> response.txt; read net_mask?"What is the subnet mask? " >> response.txt'

/usr/bin/expect ./expectssh.exp $hostip $usr $pswd "$SCRIPT"

Any suggestions on how I can pass a command to my expect script that requires user input without it hanging?

On a side note because I know it will come up - I am not allowed to do key-based automatic SSH login. I have to prompt for a username and password, which is done from my main shell script.

Thanks for any suggestions and help you can provide!

Regular Expression In Expect Script To Prevent Printing To Screen

Hello, I have an expect script where I ssh to a remote host to determine the network configuration and get from the user the network interface card that should be used. From their response, I determine the subnet mask and save the information to a text file that is later transmitted back to my local host. This is all so that I can set up virtual IP aliasing and verify that the physical IP address of the local and remote host are on the same subnet prior to continuing with the setup. I am running the script on Linux, with expect version 5.45.

The code itelf works just fine, but I'm having some issues with how it displays on the screen. As you'll see below in the example, the default system prompt displays, as does the user input command that I'm sending to the shell from the expect script.

Is there a regular expression or something that I can write to prevent the prompt and command that I'm sending from printing to the screen? I know that it should be suppressed if I have an expect command following the Code:
send -s "\nread n_card?'Enter the network interface card number for this server (i.e. eth0): '\r

command, but everything I have tried for strings and regular expressions to expect causes the netstat -rn output to not show up all of a sudden. I'm new to expect, so I'm not really sure why this is happening.

I would really appreciate any help/suggestions. Thanks for your time!

Part of the Script Code:
Code:
expect {
   -re $prompt { ;# Send individual commands and get user input
        set timeout -1

        # Get partner hostname and put in vipsetup.txt file
        send -s "hostname > vipsetup.txt\r"
        expect -re $prompt

        # Display the network routing info for the user and prompt for
        # network interface card number
        send -s "print \"The network routing table for the $ptner server is displayed below:\n\" ; netstat -rn \r"

        expect -re "\r(.*):\r"
        send -s "\nread n_card?'Enter the network interface card number for this server (i.e. eth0): '\r"
        interact "\r" return ;# Wait for user input from read command
        send -- "\r"
        send -s "echo \$n_card >> vipsetup.txt\r"

        # Obtain subnet mask information for partner based on network
        # interface card number being used
        send -s "msk=\$(cat /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-\$n_card | grep NETMASK)\r"
        send -s "msk=\$(echo \${msk#NETMASK=})\r"
        send -s "echo \$msk >> vipsetup.txt\r"
    }
    timeout {
        send_user "Connection to host $hostip timed out."
        exit 6
    }
    eof {
        send_user "Connection to host $hostip failed."
        exit
    }
}

Script Output:
Code:
The network routing table for the PRIMARY server is displayed below:

How Can I Set A Ftp Daemon On Embedded Linux ?

Hi,

I am currently working on a Embedded system (linux 2.6.24) and need to set a ftp daemon on it.
I have the busybox v1.4.2 on it but it don't have ftpd on it.
After searching on internet i find tons of way to install a ftp daemon on normal linux computer but no explanation on how to do it on an Embedded devive.
I am not the one who installed the distro and busybox, i have no knowledge on how to make this. I have no sudo/apt-get/make command on my system.

Recurring Startup Application

Hi
Kindly refer to following post:
http://www.linuxforums.org/forum/pro...tml#post954718
Here, at post #4, solution given by "LSalab" worked for me. So I added it to startup applications in my cinnamon desktop. But the problem is that, it works only once after every login (when the battery gets lower than 10% so it informs me), and if I charge the battery and again it reaches that threshold point of 10%, the system does not inform me, which means that the startup script only executes once.
here is the script:
Code:
#!/bin/bash
while [[ `acpi | cut -d ' ' -f 4 | grep -Po '\d+'` -gt 10 ]]
do echo -ne "\r`acpi`"
sleep 5
done
notify-send -t 60000 'Low Battery' 'Battery charging of your system is below 10%. Kindly Plug charger. Thanks.'
echo ''
mplayer /usr/share/sounds/freedesktop/stereo/phone-outgoing-busy.oga -loop 0

So my question is that, how can I make this script recurring at every threshold level?

Dropbox Not Running At Startup

I'm running Debian wheezy. I have Dropbox installed, but it won't run on startup. I downloaded their CLI script dropbox.py, and if I use

Code:
python dropbox.py start

then it starts. I'm trying to use that to get it to run at startup. I have tried editing .profile, and crontab, but it doesn't work and I don't know what else to try. Is it a permissions issue? (I tried making dropbox.py executable and adding python to visudo) or do I need to have some other command to run it at startup?

I appreciate the help!

No Network At Startup, But Network After Restart

Hi Folks,
Installed Mint-mate 17.
It gives message:You are now disconnected" after logging in.
I restart, the network connection comes.
It is not "networking restart", but system restart.

Tried five more times. The behaviour is every time the same.
After booting the system, no network connection. But from there I restart the system, then network connection is on.

Very irritating to always boot it second time to get the network connection up.

The computer is a desktop Dell Optiplex 9010.
On the same computer, Windows 7 runs without any problem.

Any idea how to fix it?

Thanks

Good Command Prompt Linux For Beginners, But Power Users?

Hi, please excuse any misunderstanding about the title.

I'm an experienced computer user, but not with Linux. As a matter of fact, even with Windows, I only do so much at the command prompt.

I am looking for a very fast (boot and etc.) Linux system, that has nothing more than a command prompt. No X-Windows. However, I would like to configure X-Windows immediately after an installation.

I noticed the LFS project. Very cool, but way too complex for me. It is exactly what I'm looking for, except, I would like the basic system to already be proven, maybe even with security updates.

The biggest most important thing is (ONLY WHAT I WANT). I don't want dozens of browsers, a hundred text editors, or any other cool or stupid open source or commercial software. I simply am looking for what Dos 6.22 was in Linux.

There are many distros. Can you guys help me pick one out that is light, secure and ready to be configured to run X windows or X-Free or Xorg, I'm not sure what the best is right now.

PS: I'm a linux noob, but I have had several decent installations of Ubuntu, and some experience with the command line, including compiling software, but still a beginner.

An Error Occurred During The File System Check

Hi all!! Im new in this forum and also new at linux !!

I am installing an application that includes automatically the instalation of CentOS 6.3.

The server that hosts this application and OS had a power outage and then when i turn on the server again i get the error that you can see in this pictu http://postimg.org/image/7opm0xzel/

I have 2 disks in the system, 1 for the application and SO and other to store call recordings (thats what the application do, record calls!).

If I re-install the system it has no problem!! But i dont want to re-install the system every time i have a power outage because i lost too much and important information.

I have installed this application in other server and had no problem with power outage. In this server the diference is that it originally had raid and i "remove it" frome the BIOS. Maybe here is the problem??

Anyone can help me?? Remember im really new in linux !!

Help With KDE

Hello, I am new to Linux and I am having difficulty setting up KDE. I have a vps with Debian 7 Wheezy on it and I need to get KDE working on it. The Linux installation from the vps company was very basic...I had to update the packages and install kde and kdm using the apt-get install kde and apt-get install kdm commands. When I type xstart to start the x server I get a message with the version number and other information so I am assuming that it is installed, but at the bottom of the message I have no cursor (I am able to type but when I hit the enter key after entering a command nothing happens) and the # is no longer there so I am unable to continue working. The only way i can get the command prompt and # back is to close Putty and reopen it (then I have to log into the vps all over again). From what I have read online, when I type startx, it should load KDE.

I was able to set the display by using the export DISPLAY=:0.0 command. But when I type startkde I get the message 'No protocol specified" and the next line says DISPLAY not set or unable to connect to xserver.

I have been using Putty to log into the vps, but yesterday I decided to use the web based login utility offered by the vps company. When connecting to the vps in this manner I am presented with a traditional looking login screen (I am assuming it is KDM). The user name that was provided to me from the vps company is 'root' ...well, when I try to login using KDM (the plasma setting) I get an error stating that 'root' logins are not allowed. Considering that the KDM is visible when logging in using the web based utility, I have a feeling that the KDE is also working...but I can't log into it because the user name is 'root' . However, when I use Putty I cant seem to get anything to load and start the way it is supposed to. I would appreciate any help in getting the KDE to work in Putty and the login via the web based utility to accept my username that the vps company gave me. Thank you.
