Hi everyone,
I tried to install Elementary Freya and everything was good, though suddenly while using my laptop I get a black screen. I cannot use the mouse nor the keyboard. When I press the power button, to put the computer in sleep mode, and the open it again, I can see the desktop but cannot do anything.
I tried to use Mint 17.1 and then reinstalled Elementary again but I keep getting the same problem.
I use Linux next to windows 8.1
Thanks in advance, I would appreciate any help
Hi everyone.
Earlier I posted a reply on a thread about a problem with partitions while installing Elementary OS Freya as dual-boot, and yancek answered giving me a link with a tutorial (thank you!).
However, after I continue with the installation it stopped with an error saying that grub wasn't installed, something like that. But when I start my computer (with USB boot priority), pops a window with the option to 'Try Elementary..." and "Install Elementary..." and if I press Esc a grub console appears. Doesn't that mean grub is installed? What should I do to fix this?
Best regards,
a Linux amateur

Hey everybody!
I am (quite) new to the world of linux, but have been trying out a few of the most basic distros (ubuntu-based ones).
I am now using elementary os luna, and i have a problem with installing my nvidia drivers.
I have really been googling my ass off to find this on my own, but without any results that actually worked for me.
So, i have a HP Envy laptop, with a geforce gt 740m, and i have searched nvidias homepage to find out that the up-to-date driver for me would be the 346 driver. I tried it on Linux mint xfce, and i successfully installed it. I had to add the xorg ppa repository of course, and updated it as well, but when i do the same procedure here on my elementary os, i cant reach the login screen after my reboot.
When i use the lspci -vnn command in the terminal, i get this info on my graphics driver:
01:00.0 3D controller [0302]: NVIDIA Corporation GK208M [GeForce GT 740M] [10de:1292] (rev a1)
Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company Device [103c:1961]
Flags: fast devsel, IRQ 16
Memory at d2000000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16M]
Memory at a0000000 (64-bit, prefetchable) [size=256M]
Memory at b0000000 (64-bit, prefetchable) [size=32M]
I/O ports at 4000 [size=128]
Expansion ROM at b2000000 [disabled] [size=512K]
Capabilities: <access denied>
Kernel modules: nouveau, nvidiafb
I really hope someone knows how to fix my problem.
Thanks in advance!

After 2/3 mins screen turned black, covered in white U letters with Welcome to Linux in background
Then wide red and black horizontal bands
Then a more graphic screen with 2 Linux Mint logos on green and white bands, top one a bit fuzzy. Cursor has a red box around it. Icons for Computer, Mint Home and Install Linux mint 'ghosted' with background showing through
Firefox loads, again ghosted, but cannot access internet even though wifi light lit on computer.
Computer is Fujitsu Seimens Amilo L7320 1.7 GHz and 960 RAM
What is going wrong?
Want to try Linux as computer freezes in Windows XP after about 20 mins.

Hey,
My plan is to run some Linux distro's on an external USB HDD. So far I have been able to instal elementary OS, it thus far boots with the elementary OS logo and hangs for a while when it gives me the following message:
"Gave up waiting for boot device.
- Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline)
- Check root delay (Waiting long enough?)
- Check root (Waiting for the right device?)
- Missing modules (cat /proc/modules; 1s/dev)
ALERT! /dev/disk-uuid/*super long number* does not exist. Dropping to a shell!
BusyBox v1.21.1 (Ubuntu 1:1.21.0-1ubuntu1) build-in shell (ash)
Enter 'help' for a list of build-in commands."
To give you an idea of the external HDD partition:
60 GB: ext4 (elementary OS)
4GB: SWAP
Free Space
80 GB: NTFS (Random files)
The ext4 was given '/' for mounting point to keep it simple for now. The 'boot part' I've set to instal on sdc. Which is the external HDD. (I wasn't sure whether I should have chosen the ext4 partition or not.)
Please let me know if you need any addition information. I hope someone is familiar with the problem or knows a solution.
Thanks in advance.
Hi,
Xubuntu on an old Mac Mini.
I don't know how to do much so please give basic instructions.
I use my power button to put the computer to sleep. Only the power button wakes it up again. It used to wake if I jiggled my mouse or pressed any key.
Is there something I can do so the mouse or keyboard will wake it up?
I installed Linux Mint but I can't see the taskbar to open menus, firefox or anything. When I hover my mouse in the bottom right corner the date pops up, so I think everything is there but I just can't see or click on anything. The only icons on my desktop are the Home and computer icons and they are barely on the screen but still visible. I'm hoping there is a way to adjust the screen ratio to show the whole screen. Also on web pages the "close tab x" is off the screen and out of range for my mouse to click but I was able to drag the page down to get to it.
I was able to make the taskbar icons larger, now I can see the tops of the icons so I at least know they are there.
