What Is The Best Way To Trap An Error In A Script

Hi All.

I am running a script that copies files to a USB disk.

What I would like to do is run another script if the USB disk get disconnected before the copying is done.

TIA.

Is LFS The Right Way To Build A Software Update Disk?

I'm very used to working on a linux machine, programing in Unix terminals all through college. That said, I have never needed to work with linux distributions or doing more than some apt-get software installation.

I need to make a CD. I need a machine to be able to boot from this CD. I would like there to be a unix terminal that runs a script automatically. This script must be able to mount an NFS drive, do simple networking (TCP/IP), and update the software on the machine running it through deleting/adding files.

I guess I need an .iso for a linux distro that has files and a script already on it that can be used to update a bunch of these specific machines?

Should I go through the LFS project in order to learn how to do this?

I'm pretty lost and need some help. Thanks!

OpenSuSE 12.3 Auto Mount USB

Hi
First post, hope this is in the right forum.

When I plug a USB key into my PC it appears in dolphin but isn't mounted until I click on it.

Running df at the command line doesn't show the USB key until I've clicked it in dolphin then I can access it via the command line.

I'm trying to find a way to automatically mount the key when I boot up.

I found a script that scans /dev/disk/by-label and mounts any disks it finds in to the correct location. This works great from the command line.

I tried adding it to /etc/init.d/boot.local but on a reboot it failed as the USB disk hadn't been detected when boot.local ran.

So where do I need to put this script so it will run when the machine has booted and the USB key has been detected by the OS?

The PC is unattended so I need to be sure that if its remotely rebooted the script is run so the key is mounted.

Thanks

Disk Is Not Getting Detected After Run The Scsi Command

Hi

RHEL 6.4 (64 Bit) is running as a Virutal Machine in a VCenter Server 5.5
As per our request, Vmware team added 500GB of disk space to this VM. Disk is not visible in "fdisk -l" after run the following command/script, but the new disk could be seen from the "multipath -l" command.

for i in `ls -ld /sys/class/scsi_host/host* | awk '{print $9}' `
do
echo "- - -" > $i/scan
done

Could someone clarify why it is not visible in "fdisk -l" output?

Can't Determine Error

sed: -e expression #1, char 31: unterminated `s' command

Does anyone know what might be causing this error message? It seems to also cause some strange empty files like sedTlU3nF and sedCrMjXk to be created. I get this error after adding some code to a script that is correct. The script runs ok even with the errors.

Cygwin Rsync Script Copying File Incorrectly

I am trying to write a simple test script that executes a single rsync call. Once I get the syntax right, the script will be expanded to incorporate several rsync instructions to save me time.

I'm using a Cygwin Terminal on Windows 7 to run Rsync.

The script is called "backup" and I call it from the cygwin terminal using "./backup". Have used chmod to make it executable.

When I execute the rsync instruction as a standalone instruction at terminal prompt, the file copies to the target folder perfectly.

However, when I try and drop the same instruction into a script, it copies the file over from it's original file name "mvi_1840.mov" to a file with the name "." -- literally a single period. I can rename the file to a .mov file and it works fine but naturally, I don't want to have to do this.

The one other thing I will mention is that the file is located in the /home/"username" directory in cygwin vs /bin. But I would not think that this would make a difference.

I have pasted the contents of the script file below:
Code:
#!/bin/bash
rsync.exe -rltDvP --exclude "System Volume Information" --exclude
 "RECYCLER" --exclude=\$RECYCLE.BIN --delete "/cygdrive/c/users/<USERNAME>
/desktop/mvi_1840.mov" "/cygdrive/c/users/<USERNAME>/desktop/test/"

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

How To Get Around Tar'ing Up Files You Don't Have Permissions?

I would like to tar up some system logs with core files as a normal user through a script. However these core files are owned by root.

Of course I get "cannot read directory ...: Permission denied"

Is there a good way to grab these core files through a script? From searching around, I get that the best way is to modify the sudoers file, then run the script with sudo. Is this considered the safest and best way?

Thanks!

First Time After Install, Run Configuration Script

Hello,

My job is having me get back into Linux. It has been awhile since I messed with it. My company releases Software that runs on Linux. As such, when we release a new version of the software, we have it packaged with the entire Linux OS. As such, when it is sent to our clients, they install, and then have to reconfigure, the Host Name, IP Address, Netmask, and Gateway. Our test environment consists of over ten different Linux boxes and configurations. To make life easier for me, I have written a shell script allowing me a menu to change all of these and to also enable or disable the gateway and how to set/change the localadm password.

I want the script available to users to be able to run it anytime they need to. It works great. I would like to add one more thing to this. I want to be able to run the script automatically on the very first boot after the installation. The script is set up where you have to log in as root to run it. So here is the process I want to happen:

Install Disk
System starts up for very first time after install
Automatically logs in as root and runs script
Exits as root.

I realize Linux will only do what I tell it to. How do I tell it to do this?

Perl Script Not Running Via Cron

Hi All,

I have perl script which I am trying to run on 1st Monday via cron job.
So I scheduled it as follows:

0 0 1-7 * * root ["$(date '+%a')" = "Mon"] && /usr/bin/perl script.pl

But then it didn't run so checked cron log and it seemed like its missing the command. so added a \ in front of %a and then it picked up the whole command as per cron log.

But still it didnt ran the script. I then change the script to just && echo "test">/tmp/test

Still nothing. if I run it as /usr/bin/perl script.pl it runs though

Thanks in advance.

Querying Up Jobs In A Multi-core Environment, Via A Shell Script

Hi!

I am running a script per nohup ./script.sh:
#!/bin/bash
Do.stuff -some_parameters &
Do.stuff -some_parameters

I have 64 cores at my disposal, so i start a script with 60 lines (ignoring 4 cores to be free for allday-jobs). I have to do this for ~800 jobs. A job is done within 20 hours, so each morning i come in, start a script with 60 lines, and come back the other morning.

Today i was thinking...would it be possible to query my jobs? So, whenever a core is free, start the next job from the list given in the script?

I know, i am expected to have already tried things out. But seriously, i cant. This is way beyond my skill level. I am just asking to avoid coming to the lab this weekend
