Hi,
I am very new to linux, and frankly I do not know a whole lot about computers in general, as I'm entirely self taught, and that was all on windows. I really like the idea and concept of linux and ubuntu, and am in the process of learning. I have recently installed Ubuntu 8.04 LTS on an ex Vista computer at work (upon the urging by the boss). I can give more information on the system if needed. However, I think the problem may not be with the system. This is what I got. I installed the o/s and started downloading the updates from the list. As I tried to install Samba and Wine, all of a sudden things started to become complicated. As I'm doing this at work, and everyone is excited to 'play' with this new o/s, someone tried to download limewire as well, when I was away. I didn't see the error messages at that point, but they apparently had some message about java, and tried to shut everything down. Now when I came back, I get this message:
E: dpkg was interrupted you must manually run 'dpkg -- configure - a' to correct.
Problem E: _cache->open()failed
So, not knowing much about linux and even less about using the terminal, I did open the terminal, and typed in: dpkg--configure-a and hit enter. Then it tells me that that command is not found.
I have followed some other posts that deal with this problem, however, all the remedies that worked for them did not work for me. I could use some help, please. My other option is to just reinstall the o/s all over and start new. Thank you.
I'm trying to get MRTG set up on Ubuntu 14.04 and cannot get snmpd to install correctly. Every time I try to install I get this error
/usr/sbin/snmpd: error while loading shared libraries: libnetsnmpagent.so.30: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
invoke-rc.d: initscript snmpd, action "start" failed.
dpkg: error processing package snmpd (--configure):

Processing triggers for ureadahead (0.100.0-16) ...
Errors were encountered while processing:
snmpd
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)
I've tried numerous possible fixes for this and have not found anything that works. Any help is greatly appreciated.
What Is Linux Kernel?
Those who don't know what is the Linux Kernel they should know it because Linux kernel is the essential part of any Linux operating system. It is responsible for resource allocation, low-level hardware interfaces, security, simple communications, basic file system management, and more. Written from scratch by Linus Torvalds (with help from various developers), Linux is a clone of the UNIX operating system. It is geared towards POSIX and Single UNIX Specification compliances.
Latest Stable Linux Kernel Version 3.18.1
It's been a quiet week, and the patch from rc7 is tiny, so 3.18 is out.
I'd love to say that we've figured out the problem that plagues 3.17 for a couple of people, but we haven't. At the same time, there's absolutely no point in having everybody else twiddling their thumbs when a couple of people are actively trying to bisect an older issue, so holding up the release just didn't make sense. Especially since
that would just have then held things up entirely over the holiday break.
So the merge window for 3.19 is open, and DaveJ will hopefully get his bisection done (or at least narrow things down sufficiently that we have that "Ahaa" moment) over the next week. But in solidarity with Dave (and to make my life easier too let's try to avoid introducing any _new_ nasty issues, ok?]

I'm new to Linux but have a WD MyCloud 2TB NAS. I want to run Logitech Media Server (LMS) on it and have found instructions on Logitech Forums on how to do it. Unfortunately it does not work for me. I've downloaded the deb file and used dpkg -i on that file. This gives a load of lines like this
dpkg: warning: files list file for package 'libpam-winbind:armhf' missing; assuming package has no files currently installed
and in the end LS does not appear to be running. Would anyone know what these lines are telling me and any suggestions as to how to fix the problem.
I can get no response from the Logitech forums so any help here would be greatly appreciated.
PS:The version of Linux seems to be
Linux WDMyCloud 3.2.26 #1 SMP Tue Jun 17 15:53:22 PDT 2014 wd-2.2-rel armv7l
Thanks for any help

So I've got 14.04 installed on a new computer I just built. All new hardware, new install, everything new. I had it all up and running for a few days. I got the nvidia drivers installed, installed steam and was even able to play some games. The last time I had it up it loaded fine, I played 'The Talos Principle', then rebooted to go back to windows. Now when I boot into linux it hangs after the login screen. You can look at my post history as I had this issue before. I was able to fix it that time, but I think it was a different cause.
Some things I've tried to date:
The most common suggestion I've found from googling this issue is to restart lightdm. I've done that to no avail.
I've tried simply entering tty from the frozen screen and then coming back out with Ctrl+Alt+F7. No dice there either.
I've also seen that some people needed to reset their graphics drivers when using nvidia. I tried to do that and I don't think it worked. When I try to purge all nvidia packages it always says "0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 16 not upgraded".
Results of dpkg:
Code:
$ dpkg -l nvidia*
Desired=Unknown/Install/Remove/Purge/Hold
| Status=Not/Inst/Conf-files/Unpacked/halF-conf/Half-inst/trig-aWait-Trig-pend
|/ Err?=(none)/Reinst-required (Status,Err: uppercase=bad)
||/ Name Version Architecture Description
+++-==============-============-============-===================
un nvidia-common <none> <none> (no description available)
un nvidia-prime <none> <none> (no description available)
I'm gonna keep googling around in case I find something useful, but I fear I'm treading into water deeper than I know how to swim in and I'm worried that I'll screw something up if I start experimenting. I know just enough about linux to be dangerous. Any advice on what the results of dpkg above mean or suggestions about the problem would be much appreciated.
edit: Forgot to mention that the last time it was working I didn't make any changes to anything. I played a game and rebooted. Suddenly things are broken.
Hi Guys,
I just installed Ubuntu 14.0 LTS...I get the following message:
"Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/)"
When I issue the following command:
"sudo apt-get install openssh-server"
Hi,
Could anyone please explain as understandable as possible how could I on my Windows 8 open either single file or install (and use) entire software which is supposted to work on Linux and/or Ubuntu? I have absolutelly NO experience with Linux and have never used it. Honestly, I don't know if there is any difference between Linux and Ubuntu. I want to be inside my Windows 8 while using Linux files/sofware. The only solution I could think of are actually two but neither of them is useful for me:
1. Vmware (i don't know how to use it)
2. Rent remote computer (vps/rdp) with linux OS installed (this would let me be in Windows 8 while being able to use Linux file/software [on remote computer] but sooner or later I would want to have Windows installed there too)
Tried program Linux Reader but didn't work on my Windows 8. Although I would need solution for installation/usage of software (that can be used only on linux/ubuntu), regardless of details***, the current problem is basically related to single files only: I have two files, both in IMG extension. Don't know how to open them because Deamon Tools doesn't handle IMG. The problem is that filesystem in one of them is "Linux" and filesystem in another is "142". The error I am getting when I try to open them is:
"File with harddrive/disc snapshot is corrupted."
But this is most likely because they are supposted to be used in linux environment, hence such question.
*** when i said "details" I was referring to basically anything: type of software, size, purpose, whether or not it needs network connection, whether or not it contains logging in (username password, etc) requirement, etc.
The following solution for current situation (quoted error above) works only partially:
http://www.sysprobs.com/simple-tip-h...thout-software
I am able to open/run/mount IMG if I do what is described on this link (im basically opening iso in this case - see the website) but when opening the virtual drive, the following error message proves that the file can be used in linux/ubuntu only:
"Windows cannot access that drive. Drive could be corrupted. Make sure the drive is in condition that can be recognized by Windows. If drive isn't formatted then format it before usage."
Would need detailed instructions, for total beginner, who has never used linux/ubuntu, what to do in such case: how to use in win8 files/software that are supposted to be used in linux/ubuntu. Also answer on how to open IMG would be highly appreciated.
Kindest regards and thank you a million in advance.
I have several computers connected to a D-Link DIR605L router, two with ethernet cables and two through wifi. The Windows XP computer can see itself and nobody else. The Ubuntu (trusty) desktop and Ubuntu (lucid) netbook computers see nobody (unable to retrieve file list from server) and the Windows Vista computer only sees itself. Clearly, I have failed to configure something or a set of somethings.
Do I have to have one of the computers always on, acting as some kind of file server or can the router do this job? This is a new router. My old one (whose power supply went phut) connected everybody without arguing about it and we could share files around, even with a mix of OSs.
Since this is a local network only, I have no firewalls enabled, as far as I know ...
All of the network set-up posts I've found rabbit on about how to get your internet connection working through your router, which is not an option for me. I have dial-up working on the XP computer and a mobile wireless USB dongle for internet access on the trusty desktop.
I've installed samba and a few other packages, but so far, none of them have solved my problem. Can someone please tell me where to start and which tutorials to read? If I have to set up a computer as a file server, I guess it will have to be the XP thing, as it's the only one that is always running, but I'd like to avoid that, if possible, as I speak XP worse than I speak Ubuntu.
BTW, D-Link are no help at all, two hours on the 'phone and they were still trying to get me to connect to an ADSL service I don't have ...
Hello all,
I'm having real trouble trying to get SVN 1.8.9 installed on a linux box which is now my responsibility to look after, I think it is centos or scientific linux.
EDIT: it is Scientific Linux release 6.4 (Carbon)
What I've done so far:
SVN 1.6 was installed and working fine.
I installed smartsvn so that I had a 'nice' GUI to look at the repos on the machine.
Smartsvn then upgraded my repos.
The svn client on the command line does not work with the upgraded repos.
I tried yum install svn but the latest svn is already installed (1.6).
I then installed 1.7 from source and still that version was too old.
I then installed 1.8.9 from source - yey this worked locally fine.
There are cron jobs that run and use the svn client to push to an svn server
The SVN I installed from source does not commit properly and gives this error:
svn: E170000: Unrecognized URL scheme for 'http://.....'
I googled around and found I need to install svn with configure --with-serf option.
This fails as the SVN install needs serf 1.2.1 or newer.
So I install serf 1.3.something from an rpm.
That installs fine and I retry the configure step but it fails giving the same error.
rpm -ql serf returns: /usr/lib/libserf-1.so
/usr/lib/libserf-1.so.1
/usr/lib/libserf-1.so.1.3.0
So I think 1.3 is installed...?
Does anyone know how to make the configure step of svn know where serf is? --with-serf=/usr/lib/ did not work at all for me.
Thanks for any help and I'm happy to post more information.
Cheers
Okay so I am having major issues getting python to work on Ubuntu 12.04 and other programs I want to run exclusively on this system. Just so you all know - I do not understand computer lingo much so I have a million definitions and how to's . I've kind of been thrown in the deep end on something and the I.T. guru (sorry for the frustration - but effectively this boso worked for MY company) belittled me basically calling me stupid & incapable of being able to configure a basic desktop system.
Anyways my ex from years ago also worked in I.T and played with different operating systems at 1 point so I had used Linux before and remembered it was geared to what I needed. I have installed 12.04 (trialled the latest 14 version as well but opted for the older one for more guidance. So I have everything I need for what I am doing except for 1 minor detail. I am so confused on entering the command lines
can anyone guide me to where there's a really simple straight forward guide to getting 2 programs to run and python to work? I know it's just entering command prompts so to speak but I can't get them to work or know the file directories for the locations of the programs.
ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED!!!!!!
