Possible Malware Infection On Mint 13 -- Need Help

When I went to check my email this morning, there was a new (gigantic) ad bar at the top of my gmail page. I tried to see if there was any mention of it on google, and noticed that an even more gigantic ad bar appeared at the top of each search result. The ad bar has "ad by: Media Player" in one corner, but no option to close it. I've restarted my computer, and checked to make sure my system updates were current. I've scanned my home directory with ClamTK, and nothing comes up. I've tried to download a free trial of Bitdefender (I thought this was free, but it isn't showing up in the package repository any more, so maybe not?) but whenever I try to access the Bitdefender home page or the home page of any other antivirus scanner, I get a giant malware-y looking ad page that says "YOUR COMPUTER MAY HAVE A VIRUS" with a phone number to call for help. I have not called the number. I'm very concerned now. I want to do a full system scan, but ClamTK doesn't appear to have that capability, and I don't know how to download another antivirus program safely with the ad blocking my access to the antivirus websites. Can someone help me please?

I'm running Mint 13 Maya/Cinnamon. I'm using Firefox as my browser. I did check to see if there were other reports of this problem with Firefox or Google, but couldn't find anything current.

Aspect Ratio Problem Can't See Taskbar

I installed Linux Mint but I can't see the taskbar to open menus, firefox or anything. When I hover my mouse in the bottom right corner the date pops up, so I think everything is there but I just can't see or click on anything. The only icons on my desktop are the Home and computer icons and they are barely on the screen but still visible. I'm hoping there is a way to adjust the screen ratio to show the whole screen. Also on web pages the "close tab x" is off the screen and out of range for my mouse to click but I was able to drag the page down to get to it.
I was able to make the taskbar icons larger, now I can see the tops of the icons so I at least know they are there.

Cannot Login As A Different User Than The One Created At Installation Time

I have created a new user with "useradd" than changed the password with "passwd" (logged in as an administrator). After that I tried to login as the new user but couldn't. Error message was: "call to lnusertemp failed (temporary directories full?). Check your installation".

I currently use Debian 8.

I checked the home directory and couldn't find a new created folder for the new user (wasn't supposed to be done automatically by useradd?) and I checked the etc/password and there was the new user name inside it though.

What should I do? I really need to have more than one user on this computer...

Linux Accepped Address Needed For My Charge Controllers .

The two charge controllers for my solar system are connected to my router allowing my computer to access them for data gathering. Using the address required in Windows is "tsmppt13190256/" for one of them ( tsmppt plus the serial number ). This address works with all browsers with windows .

Using the same browser on various Linux machines yields "web page not found" Morningstar ,who makes these excellent controllers , says they support only Windows. I've tried using the numbered ( 4 groups of 4 digits ) equal and even the "tiny URL" but nothing works .

I've tried adding ".,com " and HTTP:// "

How can I how can I get my Linux browsers to accept this address ?

Thanks a lot .

Phone-to-computer Data Transfer From Samsung Convoy 3 With Mint 13

I was recently given a Samsung Convoy 3 phone as an insurance replacement. One of the phone's features is that you are supposed to be able to transfer data directly from the phone to your computer using a USB cable, but the phone's data transfer program (Mass Storage) has been hanging at the step where it contacts the computer. I am running Linux Mint 13, and I've determined that the operating system recognizes the phone when I plug it in, but it doesn't mount automatically. Verizon and Samsung have not been helpful.

Today I figured out how to mount and unmount the phone manually using mtpfs, but I wasn't sure what program to assign to open it, and the one I chose didn't work. Now I can't figure out how to change the program assignment -- no "open with" option comes up when I right-click on the icon on my desktop -- and I'm also not sure what program to use.

I'm willing to do the whole data transfer via command line if someone can walk me through it. I'm not very experienced with command-line prompts yet, but I've loved the ones I've learned so far.

Thanks!

New Problem -- Amazon Prime Videos

Hello,
As of 2 days ago, I am having a new problem watching Amazon Prime videos with Flash Player. I'm running Linux Mint 13 on a Dell desktop, with Firefox 37.0.1 and Adobe Flash Player 11. I have a 7mbps internet connection.

The problem is that two days ago, the video quality on my Amazon Prime got stuck at 348 kbps. Prior to that, I was able to watch Prime videos in HD. Now, I can't.

Here are the things I have tried so far:
1. I restarted my computer and modem multiple times.
2. I ran multiple speed tests at speedtest.net to verify that my internet connection is working properly.
3. I went to YouTube and sampled a couple of 1080p videos to make sure I could view video properly on sites other than Amazon. I had no problem streaming the YouTube videos in HD.
4. I tried watching the same Amazon Prime video in Chrome with Pepperflash. This didn't work at all -- after the video finished loading, I got a black screen.
5. I cleared my Firefox and Adobe Flash caches. (For the Adobe Flash cashes, I first tried the Flash Player control panel. When that didn't work, I used the macromedia page he http://www.macromedia.com/support/do...manager06.html
6. I uninstalled and reinstalled Adobe Flash multiple times from the software repository.
7. I manually deleted the .adobe, .mozilla, and .macromedia files so they would be rebuilt.
8. I verified that HAL is installed.

Does anyone have other suggestions? I did call Amazon last night, and eventually got a tech support person who is a Linux user himself. He checked the log and verified that I was able to stream videos at HD speeds as recently as 2 days ago. He said that usually the steps I took would fix the problem, so it might be an Amazon issue, but also said that if he tried to report it it would probably get bounced because I am a Linux user and Amazon does not support Linux. I asked him please to try anyway, but thought I would check here in the meantime.

Thanks.

Samba-Apache-Webdav Permission Problem With User Www-data

I'm not sure if this should be in the newbie section, but I am somewhat of a newbie, so here goes:

In a home network, I have an Xubuntu file server with a Samba share that has me as the owner and authorizes me to access the share.

On another computer, I have Mint running and providing various services, including webdav on Apache with SSL. In the var/www/webdav directory of the Mint computer, I have the Xubuntu Samba share mounted. This is supposed to allow me to access the Samba share from the public internet.

Everything works fine except for one big problem: Apache requires the owner of the webdav directory to be user "www-data," and I can't figure out how to give www-data access to the Samba share, since www-data is not a user on the Xubuntu computer, and moreover I don't know the password for user www-data.

Can anyone figure out how to get around this problem? In particular, is there a way to configure the Samba share on the Xubuntu computer so that user www-data on the Mint computer can have access to it?

(Incidentally, I have my reasons for using two computers, one as a file server and one as a web server. Also, I am thinking about switching to NFS instead of Samba, but I'm not sure if even that would solve my problem.)

Firefox Security Best Practices

What are the recommended best security practices for using Firefox on a new Linux system (Centos 7 in my case)? I only access the web using Firefox using my regular, non-root, account. Other than that, what Firefox and/or system settings should I enable/disable in order to safeguard my system from malware scripts, viruses, etc? Also, are there similar Thunderbird settings that should be enabled/disabled?

Thanks in advance from a new Linux user

Installing Linux Alongside Windows 8 (For Now) Question

Good day everyone,

I'm currently a student and as far as I'm aware I still need windows for some program I need, but I am going over to Linux.
(Thus I'm running Windows 8 at this moment)

Today I was going to install Ubuntu 14.04.01 alongside Windows 8, everything went well till I hit the 4th step (Installation type page) of the installation:

A message like follows showed:
"This computer currently has Debian GNU/Linux (Kali Linux 1.0.7) on it. What would you like to do?"

There are then 3 options available:
1) Install Ubuntu alongside Debian GNU/Linux (Kali Linux 1.0.7)
2) Replace Debian GNU/Linux (Kali Linux 1.0.7) with Ubuntu
3 and 4 is greyed out.
5) Something else (You can create resize partitions yourself, or choose multiple partitions for Ubuntu.

I just want to make sure what option to choose, I cant afford to lose all my data and windows.

Problem: Showing Kali Linux as current OS and not Windows 8.

Possible reason for showing Kali Linux as current OS:
I have a live CD of Kali Linux and ran it a few times in the past, but according to my knowledge it shouldn't have changed anything.

Maybe the 1st option is still the right one even though the current OS isn't listed right? Or the 3rd option is like a manual setting I guess.

Thanks for the time reading and helping!

Complete Newbie - How To Install Skype/browser Updates, Etc

Hey
First of all I don't know what I'm doing with Linux. At all. Please help. And please speak very clearly and slowly.

I got this computer second hand and I don't know what version of Linux that is on it. I tried to find out, I was just told Meego. Meego is not an option on Skypes homepage for downloading Skype.

I don't really understand the different versions. I especially don't understand how to install programs and downoad updates. I want to download Skype and a more recent version of Firefox or another browser, but I dont know how.

Information online talks about, and tells me to open my Package Manager. I don't know what this is, and I can't find one on my computer. The closest thing I have is called 'Live Update' but I open that and there is nothing in it.

Please can someone take me through how all this is supposed to work please?!

Thanks
