Install Problems

Hello,
Tried to check other questions first, but didnt find any that were the same so here goes.....
Have an older pc with MSI motherboard: ms-7039 V 1.3. Other id's are N1996 and K9N6PGM2-V man. date 6/11/2008. Has bios v 9.1 simbios v 2.5 This is a 32bit.
Have formatted satas (plural because tried different drives to be sure not bad) in ntfs, partitioned according to instructions.
Have created 2 bootable usb's both 32bit, of ubuntu and mint. These both are fine as checked them on other machines so thats not the problem.
Can load win7 just fine, when go through install of these distros all goes well until says to reboot. Once reboot, loads up and either get 1. a fuzzy screen just with color 2. the screen with only icons on top right (ubuntu) sometimes mouse works sometimes not or 3. all icons top right and on left, but either mouse not work, moves in jerks and in both of these cases cannot click on icons.
Any ideas? Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks.

Aspect Ratio Problem Can't See Taskbar

I installed Linux Mint but I can't see the taskbar to open menus, firefox or anything. When I hover my mouse in the bottom right corner the date pops up, so I think everything is there but I just can't see or click on anything. The only icons on my desktop are the Home and computer icons and they are barely on the screen but still visible. I'm hoping there is a way to adjust the screen ratio to show the whole screen. Also on web pages the "close tab x" is off the screen and out of range for my mouse to click but I was able to drag the page down to get to it.
I was able to make the taskbar icons larger, now I can see the tops of the icons so I at least know they are there.

UEFI Problem, GRUB2 Problem, Blank Screen Problem, :(

Hi, So im quite new to linux and im not surprised as iv tried before to check it out and failed then (old computers problem) but i decided to have another go on a new comp recently.

UEFI mobo
Nvidia geforce 770 as output.

I need a duel boot of win7 & mint. Win7 is installed.

UEFI has caused me so many problems its just beyond me ! (i had never heard of it before i brought this comp)

booting Mint from a cd/dvd works fine.

booting from a USB fails with a blank or locked up screen at the first mint logo. (many tests with dif methods of creating live USB)

Installing mint with grub over the top of win boot loader fails , i get no options to choose between win & linux it boots straight to linux and then fails (same error as above)

I have a small SSD with win7 , there is not a lot of space on it so i want to install mint 17.1KDE on a different HDD.

After a month or so of reading testing reading testing etc i ended up getting mint installed on partitions i created on secondary HDD but i had to keep the windows boot loader in place and use easyBCD.

However now i get the choice of win7 or linux and windows still actually works (breakthrough ^^) BUT linux just crashes at boot (at the first logo) and then the monitor looses all signal?

I am soo frustrated. Mint will run of a CD but i can not get it to work in any other way , please help

Thx.

Lost My GUI In Ubuntu 14.04 After Video Card Change

Ten years on Linux and this has me stumped.
So I'm putting it in the Newbie thread.

I pulled an Nvidia card out of my box: I suspected a hardware failure with that.

The gear on the motherboard is Intel. An Intel driver is present, and it seems - judging from the logs - to be loading.

I commented out a lot of xorg.conf. There were things in there to help me get my resolution right.
Gone now, but I purged the Nvidia driver anyway.
( sudo apt-get remove --purge nvidia )

But I have no GUI.
The login screen appears as expected, mouse and keyboard work.
But when I log into the GUI I get only wallpaper, no menus nor bars nor buttons, nor anything on a right-click.

FWIW I had been using Metacity until now, rather than the latest Gnome desktop.

A CD-bootable Ubuntu still works fine in this box tonight: that makes me suppose I have eliminated any hardware problems.

Any tips would be gratefully accepted.

I think I have seen advice suggesting that a person should just delete lots of desktop config files in a situation such as this. But to me that seems wrong - or maybe hasty.

So I thought I'd ask first.

Many thanks for any help.

No Desktop Icons On Boot.

Hello, I have been using Petra for nearly a year.

I shut down every night, and the system has repeatedly functioned properly on every boot.

Recently and not always, the system boots and I have my desktop background but without any icons or any tray applets.

When this occurs, I can do nothing from the desktop and I must shutdown using the manual stop button.

When the unit shutsdown, I press the start button and the unit has booted normally, with desktop icons.

All of the desktop icons were created using Chrome.

Is there any way of curing this problem short of reloading the OS?

The machine is a HP-a1630n, with HDD and 2.4G of ram.

Thanks much,
Jim

Black Screen When Trying To Install Linux On Acer Aspire V5-573G

Hi folks,

after googling for a couple of days, I get the feeling, this is a common problem. But the usual fix doesn't seem to work for me.

I am trying to install Linux on a separate partition of my Acer Aspire V5-573G. I used the Lili USB Creator to make a bootable USB drive with Ubuntu 12.04 on it.

when I reach the installation menu, it doesn't matter what I choose (start live, install..), my notebook will always freeze on a black screen.

I figured out how to add 'nomodeset' to the grub line. This does bring me one step further (the Ubuntu start screen) but then I get this message:

Code:
ubuntu@ubuntu:^^$ [ 20.267422] mei 0000:00:16.0: init hw failure.
[ 20.267558] mei 0000:00:16.0: initialization failed.

After pressing enter I get a command line. From here I don't know what to do.

I've tried other distros (Lubuntu, Linux Mint), but then even 'nomodeset' didn't make a difference. I have also tried to add 'acpi=off' to the grub line after 'nomodeset', but again only black, even with Ubuntu.

Any suggestion or help will be greatly appreciated!

Linux Mint 17.1 Blurry Windows

I just started using Linux Mint 17.1 and so far I like it. I just have one small problem with it, all the print goes out of focus unless the mouse is hovering over it. This just started happening a couple days ago. I know it's my fault, as my 2 year old got hold of the keyboard for 10 minutes before I realized what it was she was playing with. It seems that all the icons, windows boarders, pictures, and such are not effected, just the text. Anyway to correct this blurriness?

Okay I found the problem is my nvidia driver from this link https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...s/+bug/1307236
What I have to do is delete .nvidia-settings-rc, but I cannot find it. Where is this file?

Unresponsive On Boot

I have loaded Ubuntu onto my laptop as dual boot and have setup the displays. I have used it to search the web and copy some files from the Windows partition and everything worked fine. I did not shut down over night and this morning, there is nothing on either screen except my wallpaper and mouse cursor: no lonch pad, no title bar, nothing. I rebooted with the same USB drive into "Try Ubuntu without loading" and everything worked just fine. Then shut down; removed the USB drive; and rebooted using the installed dual boot. Nothing except wallpaper and mouse. This happened once before and I reinstalled.

What am I not doing?
