New Chromebook C7 Acer

I'm looking at getting a laptop to install linux for use with audio recording software ardour. But I'm looking at chromebooks with their ssd drives and it seems like a better idea than a laptop. Am I missing the point? Is there some reason, either the processor, ram or anything else that would make a laptop a better choice than a chromebook? The chromebook is $200 and the laptop is about $700. Will the chromebook run everything a laptop will run?

I always wonder why many programs from these operating systems are not cross platform? I mean, all three are using a linux kernel.

Sometimes I would like to run a gnu/linux program on an android/chromebook device and an android/chromebook program on gnu/linux. There are a few cross platform programs that I can think of like: Firefox, google chrome browser, and Netflix.

I know very little about android's and the chromebook os's inner workings, but I do know that both have many close source apps and proprietary software and drivers.

What else is on android and the chromebook os that makes it different from gnu/linux? And why do certain companies prefer to port programs to android and the chromebook os over gnu/linux?

Hello, so for a good 6 months installing and using Linux on my HP Chromebook 2014 has worked perfectly. Then bam, one day I get on press ctrl+alt+T type in sudo startunity and it doesn't work! I am willing to reset my laptop and reinstall Linux if necessary but if its fixable please let me know! I've been looking around and haven't been able to find anything about this. Personally, I think its because my Chromebook automatically updated itself.

Just bought a chrome book and worked with my 10 year old to try to install minecraft through linux.

I followed the following instructions

to enter developer mode in chromeos. Successfully istalled linux. Using KDE. I downloaded minecraft for linux. but instructions say I should be able to click bottom left KDE kickstarted button and see "edit applications" but it isnt there.

SO i have linux up. I have minecraft in. But I am stuck. (And I still think I need java installed. Any advice/

My old computer which I am using at the moment and running Linux Mint 17.1 displays the message 'Running in Software Mode without video hardware acceleration'

'There could be a problem with your drivers'.

My old computer is running quite slowly.

I have a option to buy a Acer EEEPC so was wondering if I shouldnt replace my old old computer with the Acer.

i am using Centos 6. i want to disable boot log messages at the time of boot-up even after pressing any key like.. Esc,Alt+d,any arrow keys..

i tried to disable keys by using the command:
xmodmap -e "remove Escape = Escape" and all...
but its not working.

Hi - my name is Gavin and although not a complete Linux newbie having tried several distros in the past, Ubuntu, Zorin, Peppermint, plus a few others, I want to ask questions as if I'd never installed a distro before and start from scratch.

Before I start getting into what I want, I have to be honest to you in that I live with a condition called Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) that directly affects my everyday life including how I use technology. I lead a very simple life, stream films online (films are my big passion), watch tv shows from the States, read film magazines, and have a very basic mobile phone which I use every few months just to check for voicemails.
I am comfortable with what little I have but my goal is to one day own a device/use a linux distro just for access to the internet and nothing else.

I currently share a laptop with my mother which we both paid halves for. We have Windows 7, and use the Chrome Browser with which I have installed an app called Zenmate which allows me to overcome blocking restrictions - this is very useful because 99 of the time, I use one particular film streaming website that can't be accessed without it (Primewire.ag).

The desktop is minimal, black background with no icons, no notifications showing and all I do is the updates, security essentials then straight onto the web - nothing else. I don't really like the desktop environment, but the laptop really belongings more to my mum than me, so Windows 7 doesn't bother me because of that fact.

I must of taken back to the shops at least 3 tablets, and 9 or 10 laptops in the past few years to get a refund because I couldn't cope with the various distros I tried and felt happier just sharing with my mum. I didn't buy one then return one straightaway - it was more like trying a device out for a week or so, get frustrated, the OCD gets worse, returned the product for a refund, then use my mum's laptop, then getting something new 4 or 5 weeks later. I think the reason I have done this is because I don't actually need another laptop in the house but my compulsion sometimes takes over strongly. Last week I took back an Asus Chromebook to PCWorld after walking out of the store and realising I didn't actually need it.

So you can see I am caught between a rock and a hard place. I want my own device just for watching movies, but at the same time enjoy just having one laptop around. My 'dream' is to find a Linux distro that can boot directly to the Chrome browser. I understand that I do need an underlying os otherwise how would I access the internet and would want an os that does all the security updates in the background, while just providing me with what I need. An analogy would be something like: I want one scoop of chocolate ice cream in a cone, and the ice cream man says I can give you that but it comes with 2 scoops of strawberry and you have to eat those before you get to the chocolate. Basically, I have personally have no use for operating systems, just the internet.

When I first heard about Chromebooks, I got very very excited - wow, a boot straight to the Chrome browser, but then I realised that there was a desktop with icons that can't be removed, and that the Chrome os browser included a section on 'touchpad settings' with a little slider - there is something about sliders and volume/ brightness controls that sets off my OCD. I don't know if Chromium OS is set up differently than Chrome OS as I've never tried it but I know that it, along with other distros can be put onto Chromebooks

I have heard some distros have something called Web Kiosks which locks down the browser to the laptop and you see nothing else. Is that something you think I could look into? Or do you know of a Linux distro in which the user decides what they want on it rather than being forced to live with stuff that isn't needed? There was a distro called Webian which was just the browser, but I don't think it's being developed anymore. Unfortunately, it did't use the Chrome browser (it used it's own browser) and so Zenmate can't be installed on it.

So really to sum it up, I am looking for something that fits my lifestyle, simple, preferably no desktop, and just works the way I want it to work.

I enjoy looking at Linux distros, use Distrowatch to keep up with the latest developments, but above all, one day would like my 'dream version'!

Any thoughts or advice would be really appreciated from this community as I do want to use Linux eventually.

Hello, I am new to Linux and I am having difficulty setting up KDE. I have a vps with Debian 7 Wheezy on it and I need to get KDE working on it. The Linux installation from the vps company was very basic...I had to update the packages and install kde and kdm using the apt-get install kde and apt-get install kdm commands. When I type xstart to start the x server I get a message with the version number and other information so I am assuming that it is installed, but at the bottom of the message I have no cursor (I am able to type but when I hit the enter key after entering a command nothing happens) and the # is no longer there so I am unable to continue working. The only way i can get the command prompt and # back is to close Putty and reopen it (then I have to log into the vps all over again). From what I have read online, when I type startx, it should load KDE.

I was able to set the display by using the export DISPLAY=:0.0 command. But when I type startkde I get the message 'No protocol specified" and the next line says DISPLAY not set or unable to connect to xserver.

I have been using Putty to log into the vps, but yesterday I decided to use the web based login utility offered by the vps company. When connecting to the vps in this manner I am presented with a traditional looking login screen (I am assuming it is KDM). The user name that was provided to me from the vps company is 'root' ...well, when I try to login using KDM (the plasma setting) I get an error stating that 'root' logins are not allowed. Considering that the KDM is visible when logging in using the web based utility, I have a feeling that the KDE is also working...but I can't log into it because the user name is 'root' . However, when I use Putty I cant seem to get anything to load and start the way it is supposed to. I would appreciate any help in getting the KDE to work in Putty and the login via the web based utility to accept my username that the vps company gave me. Thank you.

A week ago, I realized that I could not boot live disks. At first, I thought that it was the optical drive not writing the disks correctly, but when I tried two live disks that I've used many times before nothing happened with those either.

I have CD/DVD drive listed first in my BIOS' boot order and I even tried selecting the optical drive in the menu when the computer started and it still does not boot a disk. Thankfully, my somewhat old hard drives are still chugging along but I need to be able to use a live disk, in case one or both die on me.

My question is, how can I know for sure what the problem is? Is there a way to test the optical drive (Samsung Super Writemaster - which has a bad rep)? Could it be my motherboard. It was bought new 2 years ago, and there are no other issues with it. Also, I have been able to create playable DVDs on my computer with the Optical drive that work perfectly on my Bluray player, yet I cannot play the movies or open a data disk in file manager on my computer. What does that mean?

I want to know that it's worth it to buy another burner, before shelling out the money when I'm already practically broke from Christmas gift purchases. Any suggestions on how to test the optical drive would be appreciated.
