Hi
I'm a telecom/IT contractor and my work laptop died so instead of buying a new one, I decided to give my spare laptop a try. It's a cheap Lenovo G585 with only 2Gb ram and a AMD E1. Needless to say this is a real slow laptop. W8 was preinstalled and barely runs. Even for simple work related tasks its too slow.
Instead of wasting money on it, I am contemplating the idea of installing a Linux distro. I manage via ssh a few linux servers for my customers (centos, red hat, ubuntu server) but actually never used it as my main OS.
I just want something lighter than W8 so the laptop will be faster. Which distro should I get? I was thinking about LXLE but there's too much distros I can't choose.
Speed is the priority in this case. I also like a good looking UI.
Also, how's Microsoft Remote desktop from a Linux client? Is it fast and well optimized?
Thanks!
Hello,
I have recently installed Elementary OS on my HP 550 laptop. While everything is running as expected, I've run into a small problem when attempting to watch videos on Youtube using Chromium.
The video loads fine but displays little yellow rectangles all over the video. According to Youtube, Chromium uses HTML5 rather than Flash - maybe that is the issue - but I am thinking it maybe a graphics driver issue. The videos run absolutely fine on Firefox and will stick to that if necessary, but I would prefer to use Chromium.
I have tried using
Code:
gksu jockey-gtk
and it couldnt find any drivers to install.
This
Code:
lspci | grep VGA
says:
Code:
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile GME965/GLE960 Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 0c)
Many Thanks
Hello
As a learning experience, I want to jump from Windows 7 to Linux full time on my laptop. This isn't because of some antiWindows bullshit or because its free or anything like that. I just want to learn the ins and outs of Linux like I pretty much know on Windows.
I plan to go with Ubuntu. LTS or latest stable version? Thoughts?
First off, compatibility. I do need that all my hardware on my laptop be compatible. From shortcut keys to wifi. This is not a brand new laptop so there shouldn't be any problems. Its a Dell Vostro 1510.
Next, software. Basically on this laptop software I use in and out: uTorrent, Teamviewer, WMP, mIRC, Skype, vSphere Client, Microsoft Office......That's pretty much it IMO. Also Facebook and YouTube (Flash) are a must. I will run all this software in WINE. I don't want (most) of the Linux ports. Im not looking to replace programs I like and use daily. Just looking to replace the operating system.
Next, virtualization. Due to some things (like Office) cannot be ran in Linux, I use a VM. VMWare with its unity feature pretty much gives me what I want.
Next, streaming. I need to be able to stream media from a WS2012R2 to this Linux installation. Special setup?
Anything that is blowing over me, please mention.
Thank you
My lovely 2and 3 year old got onto our laptop and crashed the thing my boyfriend was able to do a reset on it however the flash player on it is now playing in fast forward he has just uninstalling and reinstalling flash as well as changing a number of setting so on and so forth ... Any suggestions?
when I boot Linux from a USB drive on my laptop, I am unable to connect to the internet through my wireless on my laptop.
Help Please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
im using the latest version of ubuntu on a 4 year old dell 780 optiplex and I am more than impressed with the speed and agility of the machine. Im so impressed that I have asked my friend for an old dell laptop so I can go mobile with this thing.
my question is.... do i install the same distro for a laptop as i am using on this desktop or is there a widely used laptop distro that the linux experts always use or at least on avarage use more than any other.
thanks guys
New to Linux. Run with either Ubuntu Linux on USB or installed on Aspire laptop.
Problem: Chromium and Eclipse act like they are starting but no window opens.
For Eclipse, icon comes up, workplace prompt answered, icon reappears and counts down but no window comes up.
pstree shows that both Chromium and Eclipse have threads running.
Booting with same USB to different computer and all works fine.
Have used both 32 bit and 64 bit USB boot on 64 bit Aspire with no success.
Firefox comes up and works fine
I keep my Music on a USB flash drive. I do not have room on my laptop to store my mp3 library so this is not an option. Whenever, I remove the flash drive (or restart my computer, i think) my music player (rhythmbox currently) forgets where the music is stored. I have to go through reimporting my whole music library which is time consuming and tedious. I imagine that my music player can't find the files because the flash drive gets mapped to a different mount point or something after restarting or removing the drive.
TL;DR
How can I setup my laptop so that my music player can find my music library on a usb flash drive without needing to constantly re-import my library?
Also, I have the same question to syncing to cloud storage. How can I automatically sync flash storage to the cloud?
Chromium browser in Mint 17.1 won't run videos. Message says need to update flash player. Can't seem to find the right update. Is there one out there?
I'm looking at getting a laptop to install linux for use with audio recording software ardour. But I'm looking at chromebooks with their ssd drives and it seems like a better idea than a laptop. Am I missing the point? Is there some reason, either the processor, ram or anything else that would make a laptop a better choice than a chromebook? The chromebook is $200 and the laptop is about $700. Will the chromebook run everything a laptop will run?
