Printer Problems Canon IP4500 And Ubuntu 109

Hi there. I'm new to Linux. My son installed it. First, I was pleased. Then I was angry: we have three printers in the house. It was incompatible with them all (when I connected the printer, it did not automatically install it. Now I'm frustrated. I have been to sites to find out what version of Linux I have. I am not a techie. I worked out how to get into the black terminal screen. I worked out how to write the command uname -a and got the answer Ubuntu 109. I don't know what this means but I then worked out how to put a command in $ sudo apt-get install cnijfilter-ip4500series to install the printer. It asked me for my password. I entered the password I use to open the user interface when I turn on the laptop. No dice. I need to distribute posters this pm. I will have to spend more money, going into town to get them from there. Not great. Any help appreciated. Advice, guidance, kind words of encouragement....

How To Install Printer On OpenOffice

Hi - I just installed KDE 3.2 and OpenOffice on my Debian PC. Both are great program but I can't print in OpenOffice. I configured my HP Laserjet printer in the Control Center & prints a test page with no problem. However, it's not in the list of printers in OpenOffice. There's two printers listed in the drop-down list - lp and Generic Printer - but not the LaserJet. How do I get my LaserJet to show up in the list of printers in OpenOffice? Thanks in advance for your help.

Command Line IP Printing

Hi Forum,

I have a network printer (HP) running on 192.168.85.24 and I wish to install something that enables me to just shoot pdf och ps files directly to it from the command line, however, it has been hard finding something that describes how to make a bare bones setup like that, the most info I find talk about user interfaces, clicking menues opening web browsers etc, I want things incredibly simple, then they are more robust.

Do you have a tutorial on how to just get an HP-printer to accept ps och or pdf files from the command line?

I run Debian with LXDE and have contact with the printer. (I tested with ping.)

Another question I have is for this forum, do you have a search function? If I had had a search function I would have searched for an answer to the question before posting it.

Kind regards
Johnny

I Didn't Enter A Password But It Is There.

I first did the "try it", running it from the CD. I had the option to install from there and did. I cannot download any thing. My user name is John and there are 5 dots in the password space? My version is: ubuntu 14.04 lts. I was not able to change the root to read-write so I could change the password. Nothing worked unbuntu does connect to my wifi.
I'm a real newbie but what I 've tried in ubuntu has impressed me.
Help please

Using The Teminal Command Line In Ubuntu 12.04 Lts

Stupid question i know. I am trying to install some brother printer drivers and following the instructions it states that i must change to the directory where the file is stored by using the following command line "cd /home/(loginname)/downloads"

this comes back with unkown directory. When i use DIR the directory is there but it will not allow me to access it?

This has worked before. I have been using linux now for a few years and never had this problem before. It must be something stupid that I am doing.

Trying To Use Zorin. Wrong Distro Choice? Advice Invited From Linux Experts

Hello Linux experts (because I suspect experts are what I need). Being a newbie I tried to choose a linux distro that I could use most like windows XP in particular, to include apps, maintenance and ease. To me it seemed like ZORIN fit the bill so I installed Zorin 9 on a 500 gb HD and configured a desktop with Cairo Dock (that dock being like the quick launch bar in Windows). So far so good.

Two main tasks I have is finding a back up (clone) utility I can use to clone the entire HD to an external USB HD so that I can simply plug in that clone and have the identical Zorin back exactly the way it was. Secondly I want to install my Canon printer (all in one print, copy, scan, and fax) so that I can use it the same way as with XP.

So far I've been disappointed for both because the clone apps I see available are "dd" (terminal) which does not seem to work and/or if it did the advice is that a clone could take days or weeks? Say what? Is that nuts or what. In windows I can clone my HD in 45 minutes, plug it in the computer and have an exact working copy of the source HD. Obviously days or weeks to obtain a HD clone is not good, and I'm not even sure that if I did it anyway that I would actually be able to plug it in (in place of the original HD),having an exact working copy of all files including boot, system, files and apps.

Next, installing my Canon printer seems unlikely if not impossible because I can't find drivers for that printer available for Zorin.

Did I make the wrong distro choice, and if so which Linux distro should I have installed? Ubuntu? Mint? Or maybe I'm looking for more in any Linux that can be had to date? Any advice please? Save me from having to go back to Windows which everyone knows (including M$oft MVP's)sucks.

Libreoffice Cannot Find Network Printer, Offers Only (non-existent) Generic Printer

Arch linux, lxdm/lxde, recent installation, feeling I must be doing something stupid, would be glad to be guided!

I have a Brother HL-2030 printer connected to a Raspberry Pi as a print server, CUPS setup, with sharing turned on. Other machines in the household, and indeed other OS's on the machine I'm writing on, print trouble-free to this printer.

On *this* desktop machine, (with libcups installed,) other programs print trouble-free. Firefox, Thunderbird, geany and evince all detect the presence of the network printer, and work as expected.

It's just Libreoffice that does not. This is true both of libreoffice-fresh and libreoffice-still, and it is true for all the components (write, draw, calc etc).

Libreoffice *does* find the network printer from other OS's that I play with; I have Puppy and Mint on the same machine, but those installs of Libreoffice are obviously different/earlier versions (nor do I feel like upgrading them in the circumstances!)

In this context, though, the Libreoffice "File>Printer settings..." menu offers me only a "Generic Printer" (whose properties and options I can edit). If I ask Libreoffice to print to this generic printer, it reports no failure, but that task just seems to disappear into thin air.

On the Pi server, /var/log/cups/ offers

Code:
# extract from /var/log/cups/access_log

I really think I must be doing something very stupid and newbie-ish!
