Chgrp Not Changing A File?

Hello,

OS: CentOS 6.3

Background:
I'm trying to set up a situation where my FTP account is in a group where my phpbb forums were created. This will allow me to upload changes as I customize my forums (ie: .css files). However, right now, my problem is that I'm running into invalid permissions and the only way to move the files is to upload the file to a directory my FTP account has access too and then sudo cp the file over. Upon closer inspection of my files, it appears the groups the files have been made under are not the correct group.

Problem:
I am trying to use chgrp on a specific file to change the group owner to the group my FTP account is a member of but it does not seem to be working. Here is a snippet of what I'm doing:

Code:
zzz@aaaa:/var/www/html/yyy/forums/styles/GlossyBlack/theme]$ sudo chgrp apache colours.css -v
group of `colours.css' retained as apache
zzz@aaaa:/var/www/html/yyy/forums/styles/GlossyBlack/theme]$ ls
total 164
drwxr-xr-x 3 5645316 apache 4096 Mar 27 15:11 .
drwxr-xr-x 6 5645316 apache 4096 Nov 18 2012 ..
-rw-r--r-- 1 root apache 23480 Mar 27 19:05 colours.css

I'm not sure why it still says root so I suspect I am doing something incorrect. When looking around, at first it seemed chgrp could change group owner on files but as I dug more, it seemed it can also change groups themselves. So I'm a little confused and require some clarity of experts.

I hope changing the group owner of this file will give access to my FTP account so I can apply this change to all needed locations.

Thanks.

Upgrade From 12.04 To 14.04 Freezes Mid-install

Hi.

I've just bought this spanking new Dell with Ubuntu Linux on it, but when I'm trying to upgrade from 12.02 to 14.04, it just freezes during installation when it's unpacking adium ubuntu theme.

What should I do?

Should I restore factory settings and try again? or should I just leave it at 12.02?

I've searched online already, but it's been fruitless.

EDIT: Of course, I've updated everything else before I did the switch.

Can Anyone Suggest A Good Themr And Some Settings Pointer For Irssi ?

Hello Guys. I stumbled upon this forum doing a google search and I had an error which some user in this forum help solve and everyone seemed friendly and no questions really seemed dumb to ask. So, I decided to join and ask questions and take part in this community.

I recently got a small VPS and I am running Debian 7 64Bit i believe. I installed irssi and i am hoping to get familiar with the software as I love irc and chatting and staying in touch with people over irc.

I have come across many people who had irssi installed with a theme and showed exactly how they set it up but that was like a year or 2 old. I tried using the same setup and i kept running into issues or not the same thing i saw in the screenshots or the videos.

I was hoping someone to show me how their setup is or if they have a custom theme, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks.

Update Grub Command Not Working

I have made a change to GRUB2 bootloader in etc/default/grub.
Now I need to run 'update grub' for the change to take effect.
However, the 'update grub' command on the terminal is giving this error message:
Code:
root@debian:/# update grub
bash: update: command not found

Can someone please explain why this command is no longer working?

I've had to make a change to grub because I tried to install a new distro which meant I had to alter grub.
The install wasn't successful so I deleted the grub file and then re-installed it.
The re-installed grub needs a change so I can get sound on my pc.
However, I can't add these changes because the 'update grub' command doesn't work.

I've checked the grub file with another debian distro and they are both the same.
So now I don't know if I need to check if a different grub file is the problem or anything else.
Can someone help?

Editing "Main Menu" In Debian. Can't Change.

I've just installed Debian 8 with Gnome and I can't change the icons that appear in my desktop. I had some problems with my old Wheezy 7.8 but now, with Jessie, is imposible.

When I select Main Menu one Window is opened but when I make a change this change is lost when I close the Window and always I see the same icons in Desktop.

Can anybody help me?

Vsftpd - How To Change A Virtual User Password?

Hi, I'm really a newbie when it comes to Linux, so please bear with me.

We have a working FTP using vsftpd with a pam.d database (by the looks of it).

I've found the list of users/password in the /etc/vsftpd/ folder called passwd, but they are all encrypted.

How can I change the password for a single user? I'm sorry I've been looking for over 3 hourw, still don't understand how to do this.

Thank you very much for whomever can help.

Trying To Change The IP Address And The Hostname

I have two servers, “ServerA” and “ServerB”. Using SLES SP3.

ServerA is the main server with LTSP running

I have used DD to image the drives from ServerA to ServerB. ServerB now boots and is identical to ServerA,and all is well. I want to use ServerB as a backup server, so if ServerA goes down I can bring server online. Obviously in order to put them both on the same network (to keep the user files updated on a daily basis) I need to change the IP address and the host name of serverB (currently is the same as ServerA).

I have done the following (copied from my notes):
Code:
The following file, binds the ethernet MAC address to ETH0 or ETH1 etc.. We need to delete this file so that a new one is automatically created during reboot with the correct MAC address bound to ETH0
  Delete this file:
      /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules

make sure to change the static IP address in the following files
    /etc/dhcp.d
    /etc/hosts
    /etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg-eth0
    /opt/ltsp/i386/etc/ltsp.conf

give the system a different host name in:
    /etc/HOSTNAME

Reboot the system

When I change the HOSTNAME, the server will boot, bring me to a log in screen and then after I log in it will just sit there with the green background and a cursor. What files am I forgetting to change..

Audio Output Source Changes

Not sure if I should be posting this here or the arch board (I dont think there is a manjaro board but arch is close enough) but I'm still learning the in and outs of all this and this board has been really helpful with ambiguous problems.

The Laptop:
Hardwa Lenovo Thinkpad W530
OS: Manjaro 0.8.12 Ascella
Kernel: x86_64 Linux 3.19.3-1-MANJARO
Shell: bash 4.3.33
Resolution: 1600x900
DE: XFCE4
WM: Xfwm4
WM Theme: Menda
GTK Theme: Xfce-dusk [GTK2], Not Found [GTK3]
Icon Theme: Menda-Square
Font: Cantarell 11
CPU: Intel Core i7-3630QM CPU @ 3.4GHz
GPU: Quadro K1000M
RAM: 1112MB / 15871MB

Problem: Audio will randomly stop, only after waking up or logging in. It never happens during playback. It seems once I get it working again it doesn't happen.

Oddly enough, I cannot recreate the problem it's pretty inconsistent but its happening fairly regularly

What happened when it started: I was trying to connect headphones by bluetooth. Beats headphones (if this is relevent). It connected right up, but it took a little bit of troubleshooting before I realized I had to manually switch the output source to be the headphones. The problem started shortly after this so I am guessing this is what started it.

Troubleshooting: Here is what I am noticing, simply plugging an audio cable in and then out resets playback to the speakers. I took at look at the 'audio mixer' and saw this, whe nthe headphones are plugged in, speakers switch to "muted", masters level drops slightly, and 'mic boost' turns up a bit. Unplugging them unmutes the speakers, puts master back to maximum, and turns mic boost down.

I haven't seen the audio mixer while the problem is still happening because It's become a kneejerk reaction to just quickly stick the headphones jack in to fix it.

I've seen this thread:
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...put%27-798325/
and this following article:
http://ubuntugeek.com/forum/index.php?topic=21.0

These seem more applicable to ubuntu and the problem itself seems different.

Any thoughts?
