How Can I Recompile PHP With ./configure?

Hello,

I am trying to install OCI8. I'm pretty sure the last thing I need to do is run the "./configure" command, but no matter where I try to run it, it gives me back a "file not found" or "command not found" error. I have tried this on CentOS and Fedora and always install PHP with yum. I have done many GUI searches looking through the file system for "php" and have tried to run ./configure in every php folder I can find but the command never runs. Any suggestions are very much appreciated. Thanks so much!

-Matt

P.S. Do I even need to do this if I already edited the "php.ini" file and installed OCI8 with PECL? Thanks!

Problem In Installing The Software Using The Command Line

Hi all,
i am new to linux, i am using Centos 6. There is some problem in the network settings as i am able to browse internet from a browser but when i am trying to use the terminal (using ping command) for any of the website (say www.google.com) nothing is happening. suppose i want to install some software (like hdf5), when i am using "sudo yum install hdf5" it shows large number of error massages like "error could not connect to the host". It would be a great help if someone provide the solution.
Thanks in advance.

Using The Teminal Command Line In Ubuntu 12.04 Lts

Stupid question i know. I am trying to install some brother printer drivers and following the instructions it states that i must change to the directory where the file is stored by using the following command line "cd /home/(loginname)/downloads"

this comes back with unkown directory. When i use DIR the directory is there but it will not allow me to access it?

This has worked before. I have been using linux now for a few years and never had this problem before. It must be something stupid that I am doing.

Debian Now Only Booting To Command Line

Hi all,

I'm once more trying my hand at Linux, but it's been so long that I've forgotten everything I learned last time and going back in again as a total newbie.

I tried out SteamOS first, but found it much too clunky for my tastes and, despite being based on Debian, seemed to have had a lot of functionality removed and inability to install some packages even after adding in Debian repos to the sources.list, so I ended up switching to vanilla 64-bit Debian 8 using KDE as my desktop. At first things were going good, managed to install the AMD Graphics Drivers and get Steam itself installed, along with downloading/installing a few games.
I then downloaded a game from gog.com but was getting an error message, which on looking it up appeared to be due to my only having 64-bit libraries for my graphics drivers and no 32-bit ones. I did some more Googling, ran some commands and did some apt-get installs (though sadly I can't recall exactly what they were) and eventually, the game launched fine and all appeared well.

The next time I started up my laptop though, Debian just boots straight to a full screen command line, not the desktop GUI that I want, and I have absolutely no idea how to either switch back to the GUI, or make it the default again. I'm not sure if I've somehow removed KDE, the xserver (I think?), somehow disabled one of them or just changed the startup preferences.
I'd really rather not have to reinstall the whole system again, so any suggestions will be very much appreciated!

Borked Ubuntu With Putty SSH Cmd Line

I am not sure what happened here, and I find it oddly disturbing that a Putty session from Window could do this, but here is what I did -

I was attempting to open a ssh redirect session from Putty command line on my W7 work PC to my home PC running Ubuntu 14.04. I've done this before with the Putty GUI and had no issues at all, but this time I was using cmd line and it never did connect. I ran this command:
Code:
putty -ssh -D 1080 -P 22 domain.com

The Putty window opened but never connected. I tried twice and when it didn't connect, I gave up and went back to the GUI. I connected with the GUI just fine, but after connecting an SSH session to my Ubuntu server at home, I noticed it was acting odd.

Long story short: It was in a "read-only" mode, saying the file system was read-only. I couldn't run apt-get update or even create a new folder in my Home folder or desktop. I remotely rebooted the machine and it never came back online.

When I got home I checked it, and it told me that Ubuntu had found some errors, and was asking if I wanted to correct them. I said yes and it took a short while, but then finally let me log back in.

After this, the box is about 90-95% back to normal except for a couple of odd things that I don't understand.

The main issue is that my Samba shared drives are no longer working. The fstab file looks the same and can connect to other machines, but nothing can connect back to the Ubuntu box. The folder permissions are correct also. I have a CentOS7 box, a Fedora laptop and a W7 box - none of them can connect to my Ubuntu box. I only run Samba and connect with it, even from Linux boxes, just to make it simple (since Windows is stupid and can't use NFS) - this has always worked in the past. Now for the life of me, I can't figure out why nothing will connect.

Is there a logfile or trouble-shooter I could look at it see what happened? It should be in /var/log somewhere, but I don't know where to start. SSH? Samba? The entire filesystem was read-only for a short while, so is there a FS or System log in /var/log?

I am kinda confused on this one, any help is appreciated.

Equivalent Command For "time -v" In Centos

I want to know the approximate maximum memory usage by my process. If I start the process using "time -v <myprocess>", I get the output after it terminates. This works fine in RedHat Enterprise Linux, but not in Centos. There does not seem to be an option "-v" for time. Do I miss anything ? What is the equivalent in Centos to know the peak memory usage by a process ?
