Following the instructions on the spotify site to install on ubuntu/debian it says:
# 2. If you want to verify the downloaded packages,
# you will need to add our public key
sudo apt-key adv --keyserver hkp://keyserver.ubuntu.com:80 --recv-keys 94558F59
It's a reputable site so I did it and everything works ok.
Would this be a risky action at a less reputable site or is it more risky not to add the public key?
hi guys,
i understand the concept of a public and private key for ssh signing and encryption...i just dont get the implementation.
if you have a client and a server and you want two way communication do both have to have each others public keys in the .ssh/authorized_keys files on each respectively?
should you use a password? does it matter if you want to run say rsync from one to the other with a cron job or script?
does anybody just have a breakdown of exactly what you need to do and how it works in different situations...
i found this:
https://www.digitalocean.com/communi...up-ssh-keys--2
seemed to help...but im still not 100% clear...
I'm running kali linux. I'm having troubles installing pretty much anything, because when I add any ppa using the add-apt-repository command, I get an error message. I'll use simple screen recorder as an example
add-apt-repository ppa:maarten-baert/simplescreenrecorder
maarten-baert/simplescreenrecorder
Executing: gpg --ignore-time-conflict --no-options --no-default-keyring --secret-keyring /tmp/tmp.EQM7zzCyye --trustdb-name /etc/apt//trustdb.gpg --keyring /etc/apt/trusted.gpg --primary-keyring /etc/apt/trusted.gpg --keyring /etc/apt/trusted.gpg.d//debian-archive-jessie-automatic.gpg --keyring /etc/apt/trusted.gpg.d//debian-archive-jessie-security-automatic.gpg --keyring /etc/apt/trusted.gpg.d//debian-archive-jessie-stable.gpg --keyring /etc/apt/trusted.gpg.d//debian-archive-squeeze-automatic.gpg --keyring /etc/apt/trusted.gpg.d//debian-archive-squeeze-stable.gpg --keyring /etc/apt/trusted.gpg.d//debian-archive-wheezy-automatic.gpg --keyring /etc/apt/trusted.gpg.d//debian-archive-wheezy-stable.gpg --keyring /etc/apt/trusted.gpg.d//kali-archive-keyring.gpg --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com
Can someone please tell me what is going on? I have never been able to add a ppa before using kali linux.
I am running Ubuntu 14. in virtual box on a early 2008 imac. I have a shared folder on my imac and have the Ubuntu Public folder shared.
The problem is Ubuntu can not see the imac folder and the imac can not see the Ububtu\Public folder.
hi people,
i reinstalled my server with centos 7 to get familiar with it...
i have a laptop that im using cygwin on to ssh into the centos 7 server.
i ran ssh-keygen -t rsa on the server and now in .ssh i have a public and private key created.
i copied the public key from the server to my C:\cygwin64\home\Administrator\.ssh\known_hosts file
now when i input:
ssh userontheserver@serversip
it asks for the passphrase which i created when i did the keygen
on the server
when i put the passphrase in it says permission denied
and returns me to the command line
what am i doing wrong?
do i have the steps correct?
am i right in saying that you need to have the servers public key in your known_hosts file on the client computer to get communication working?
Hello Everyone,
I have a question about how to give sudo privileges to a user that log in via public key without password.
I created a normal user and I added this user to the "visudo" folder with ALL privileges.
when the user is logged in the system via public key and the user wants to become a root, a password is requested but i don't want to type the password.
Also to add the public key to the root it is not possible because i track the user log in in the system and if they log via root i cannot do that.
Thank you in advance.
Was running Windows 8.1 Pro till it got sick and died. I managed to install Ubuntu 14.04 on my sick computer over Windows wiping it out.
I first installed Linux Mint and downloaded Ubuntu. Somehow I was able to verify checksums or MD5Sums. I think my age is catching up with me and my mind doesn't work like it used to.
How do I find the MD5sum of a downloaded iso file. I've downloaded debian-7.8.0-amd64-DVD-1-3.iso's and both update DVD's as well. I've located the MD5Sum files on the Mirror. Now, how do I compare those numbers/letters with the iso's I've downloaded.
I know I need to run a program to compute the MD5 but can't find it in the menu. I see I need to read man pages and info pages, but can't find them either.
A brain is a terrible thing to waste, but mine needs help.
Thanks,
Stephen
I set up public key authentication between my MacBook and and VPS for added security and convenience when I SFTP things to my VPS.
Now I have some new clients who want me to manage their websites, and I want a similar set up for each client.
Do I need a public/private key pair for each client?
How can I be sure that whatever I do in my SFTP client doesn't put the other accounts - particularly my own VPS - at risk?
Thanks,
Rob

Unetbootin does not do it and nor does startup disk creator. I the forums are described other ways but too complicated for me. I did find this, with simple instructions
https://ifireball.wordpress.com/2011...tor-on-ubuntu/
sudo aptitude install python-parted isomd5sum python-pyisomd5sum python-urlgrabber extlinux python-qt4 python-qt4-dbus tar
That command should install these packages but all I get is sudo: aptitude: command not found.
isomd5sum
python-parted
python-pyisomd5sum
python-urlgrabber
extlinux
python-qt4
python-qt4-dbus
tar
Does anybody know a simple way to make a Fedora live USB using ubuntu. I was planing to try their Fedora Workstation 22
As you may know wubi has become thing of the past and will not work any more.
I tried to use it to reinstall Ubuntu on my Windows machine and it went thru the very 1st phase of install but gave an error which meant something like "the files are not on the ftp site"...and then quit.
I found out that there is no more WUBI support for UB 14.4 so now my question is:
Is there anyway I could install an Older version of Ubuntu (or even the new version)on my Windows machine without risk of destroying my partitions or Win OS?
I did search the site before posting this but most related subjects were from 2007 and so unrelated.
in a way I wished the heck it was 2007, life was much easier then! heh
Thanks!
P.S Frankly I am not impressed by discontinuation of WUBI and dont care for newer versions of Ubuntu. Seems like they did a lot of fixing on the things which were not broken in the 1st place!? Tell me if I am wrong...what's so good about newer versions except a lot more restrictions?
