What Should I Do So That I Can Access My Notes From Anywhere

Hi all,

I'm aspiring new Linux Administrator and I have been given tasks of looking at various Linux servers and clients. As a newbie, I often forget/confuse about the series of steps I should take to accomplish certain tasks against various types of Linux distro. So I have some large no of notes in text file format, which i often refer to.

Earlier I used Microsoft OneNote, which can be used to view/update/create notes from my home PC, my Android phone or through various web browsers at client's site. But now, I am not able to access notes simply because, (1) MS SkyDrive is too slow, (2) Many of Linux machines have no GUI, (3) I'm not allowed to carry my Android phone inside server rooms, etc.

Long story short, I should be able to access my text notes in terminal from any machine which has internet connection. And also if I may extend, also in my android phone.

What I have with me is one .com domain with hosting space for next 1 year.

Any Idea on how I should proceed will be really appreciated.

Many thanks.

Trouble Configuring Vsftp

Using a Raspberry Pi w/ Debian

Read the manual and several "how-to"s and am getting nowhere

vsftp is running and making a log file. I can get to the Pi with putty or SAMBA

Ultimately want to be able to both(I) ftp in under the "pi" user to access files remotely and (II) have people sending me huge files ftp them in anonymously

Have tried (I) the ftp client in Windows 7 Internet explorer 11, (ii) the ftp client in the Windows 7 "map network drive" UI, and (iii) ES file explorer on my Android phone.

The android phone tells me there is no server there. Windows 7 gets no password challenge, gives no error indication, but does nothing useful. The vsftpd log file shows some attempt by the Windows machine, nothing for the Android.

Config file and log file attached.

The Android is trying to use port 21, the config file mentions something about port 20. Which ports do I need to forward in my router to enable remote access?

Any help appreciated.

Thanks. Jonathan

Transferring Audio Files From A Media Player To An Android Phone

Hi all,

I'm not quite a newbie having been using Linux for around a year now and think I know some of the basics at least. In the main it does what I want, some things better than they ever did on Window while some things frustratingly more awkward!

I have a load of music files that I'd like to search through and transfer some to the external sd card of my android phone. This was something that was a doddle during my Windows days but seems unbelievably difficult now. Back then I used a media player I loved, Mediamonkey, and could simply drag and drop whichever tracks I wanted, or right click and move to a device that way. Sadly this doesn't work too well with WINE though so is fine on XP through Virtualbox, apart from a lack of USB function.

I'm using Linux Mint 17.1 with a KDE desktop.

When I plug my phone into a USB port, it is recognised straight away as an android phone and I can navigate around it with no problems in Dolphin. I could look for each individual file and transfer them that way but with around 30,000 mp3s the task would take quite some time!

None of the media players I've tried so far recognise the phone or the storage on it.

I've installed Windows XP on Virtualbox and have Mediamonkey on there with all my audio files. I can't seem to get Virtualbox to recognise any USB devices so I can't transfer files that way either.

I find it annoying that, in effect, Android is a variety of Linux yet connectivity between the two is so complicated. Airdroid has been the best way that I've found but that's not an option.

I've been trying for 4 hours now and have got nowhere. If anyone can help I'd be grateful Thanks

How To Escape A FS In A CSV Text And Help With Formatting

Hi Linux Experts,

I have the following problem to solve:

-Below is the CSV file give

firstname,lastname,password,username,notes,city,phonenumber
fred, smith, notgood1, fredsmith, this user\, is the first in this file, Brighton,345698
Peter, Bloggs, anotherbad,peterbloggs,,London,987123
Jo, cooper, notmuch, jcooper, this user is Jo, Brighton, 456987
john, carter, nearlyempty, jcarter,This note is actually very long\, but really doesn't say anything very useful,,345777
sam, jones, passing, samjones, Not much of a note really, Manchester, 135790

- capitalise the first letter of the two name fields
- sanitise the formatting
- move the username column to the beginning of each line
- the phone number is missing the area code - look up the city in the following table, and add it to the beginning of the phone number column:

City, Area Code
London, 5
Brighton, 6
Manchester, 7

Provide the corrected CSV file.

One of the problems I have is that whenever I use the comma as FS the output for column 5 is the following

cat Test.csv | awk 'BEGIN { FS = "," } {print $5 }'
notes
this user\

this user is Jo
This note is actually very long\
Not much of a note really

It stops in the middle of the entry because it sees the comma but what I am trying to achieve is to produce the full entry for column 5 like this:

this user\, is the first in this file
This note is actually very long\, but really doesn't say anything very useful

I have to probably escape somehow the FS in the text but so far no joy with completing this task. Also can you kindly help out for the rest of the requirements.
I really appreciate your help in advance.

Ivan

Why Chromebook, Android And GNU/Linux Not Cross Platform Operating Systems.

hey folks,

I always wonder why many programs from these operating systems are not cross platform? I mean, all three are using a linux kernel.

Sometimes I would like to run a gnu/linux program on an android/chromebook device and an android/chromebook program on gnu/linux. There are a few cross platform programs that I can think of like: Firefox, google chrome browser, and Netflix.

I know very little about android's and the chromebook os's inner workings, but I do know that both have many close source apps and proprietary software and drivers.

What else is on android and the chromebook os that makes it different from gnu/linux? And why do certain companies prefer to port programs to android and the chromebook os over gnu/linux?

Best Distro For A Cheap Recent Laptop?

Hi

I'm a telecom/IT contractor and my work laptop died so instead of buying a new one, I decided to give my spare laptop a try. It's a cheap Lenovo G585 with only 2Gb ram and a AMD E1. Needless to say this is a real slow laptop. W8 was preinstalled and barely runs. Even for simple work related tasks its too slow.

Instead of wasting money on it, I am contemplating the idea of installing a Linux distro. I manage via ssh a few linux servers for my customers (centos, red hat, ubuntu server) but actually never used it as my main OS.

I just want something lighter than W8 so the laptop will be faster. Which distro should I get? I was thinking about LXLE but there's too much distros I can't choose.

Speed is the priority in this case. I also like a good looking UI.

Also, how's Microsoft Remote desktop from a Linux client? Is it fast and well optimized?

Thanks!

Android Emulator ADT Problem

I am having a problem when trying to start my Android emulator (versions 2.2 or 2.1 or 4.3).

It says this:
"Starting emulator for AVD 'Android4-3'
ERROR: 32-bit Linux Android emulator binaries are DEPRECATED, to use them
you will have to do at least one of the following:
- Use the '-force-32bit' option when invoking 'emulator'.
- Set ANDROID_EMULATOR_FORCE_32BIT to 'true' in your environment.
Either one will allow you to use the 32-bit binaries, but please be
aware that these will disappear in a future Android SDK release.
Consider moving to a 64-bit Linux system before that happens."

Now, I am launching this Android Virtual Device from a GUI, and I'm actually somewhat confused as to how I'm supposed to find what command to use to to launch the emulator and not the GUI (and more generally, how to find what commands to use in a GUI situation).

Sorry if I missed some important information, I am pretty new to Linux.

Live Linux Distro With More Wifi Drivers

Hello,

I am looking for a live linux distro that is able to recognize more hardware by "default" without installation. For example, when I borrow a laptop/netbook, I want to be able to boot the live linux distro and be able to have wireless access to internet (at least most of the time).

I know how to get the wireless working if I have internet access to begin with, but sometimes I do not have a wired connection or am not allowed to install stuff.

I would like to try many live distros on different laptops, but it would be hard to convince other people to give me their laptops to do that; so I would really appreciate your help.

Thanks

Bootable Text Editor

I'm looking for a distraction-free environment to write down study notes (darn ADHD!), and my penmanship is terrible (and can't be searched).

I have an old HP laptop that can boot from USB, and an old thumb drive.

Ideally, I'd like...
- Fast boot
- Boot right into text editor (can be command line editor)
- Save out (back onto USB drive or HDD, accessible by Windows to copy over into evernote for later)

I'm not a total idiot, but am a linux noobie, so any instructions would be helpful.

I appreciate your time! Thank you!
