Hi, I have a fresh install of Slack 14.1. My laptop has 1440x900 capability. When I set vga=869 (1440x900x32) in lilo I get black stripes across the top however when I set to vga=ask and select 39D (1440x900x32) from the list it fills the screen perfectly. Why the difference between 869 and 36D selections when both refer to the same resolution? And how do I correct this permanenetly in lilo so I do not need to manually select?
Slackware 14.1 on Macbook Pro 15" using VMware Fusion
I have dual-boot configuration, Windows and Linux Mint. I would like to replace Mint with Slackware. Problem is, Mint installed GRUB and Slackware uses LILO. At the moment I don't have second computer so I can't use help of internet if anything goes wrong, so I need first to make sure I know what to do.
Do I just proceed with installing Slackware and LILO will overwrite GRUB? Or how do I do it?
I am trying to boot Linux Mint from an 8gb Sandisk USB. I changed my boot settings and it boots into what I believe is called grub? I am given two options, Boot Linux Mint, Boot Linux Mint (compatibility mode). When I select either of them all I get is a black screen. I've tried many things to get around this, messing with my graphics card settings (within grub), different USB's (another 8gb and a 32gb), I tried Ubuntu and that just doesn't boot at all I go straight back to my UEFI settings. I'm very new to Linux and I don't just want to hop in, I just want to boot from my USB whenever I want to play around with it. Thank You
Note: I'm running windows 8.1 currently on a ASUS N550JV laptop. I've been using the UUI from Pen Drive Linux.
Hey, not sure if this is the best place however thought id ask my question ..
My while loop below doesnt return as id expect :
while [[ ! "$RES" =~ (1|2|3|4|5|6|7|8|9|x|10)$ ]]
do
read -p "Please select an above option : " RES || exit
done
if [[ "$RES" =~ 1 ]]
echo "Option 1 Selected"
and so on through all my results
This goes on and works all the way up to 10.
If i select option 10 it runs option 1.
Any idea how to make sure when i select option 10 it runs it not 1.
Hi All,
I recently decided to tryout Linux and dual booted my laptop (originally just had windows 8) with Xubuntu. Now I want to try out Kali Linux. So I downloaded Kali and made a bootable USB, the problem is that when I try to boot from the USB it just brings up the grub menu asking me to select Xubuntu, Windows etc. I've changed the boot menu in the BIOS but that has no effect.
I've tried booting into windows and the restarting by holding shift but when I select the usb option it just says:
"system doesn't have any USB boot option. Please select other boot option in Boot Manager Menu"
and then returns to the grub menu. I don't understand because I used a bootable usb to install xubunto?
I'd be really grateful if anyone can help me out with this!
Thanks
I have a Toshiba laptop that will not boot. I get to the grub menu which gives me the option to load Ubuntu, Ubuntu recovery mode, or a couple of memory tests.
If I select Ubuntu I get a black screen with a flashing cursor in the top left corner.
Selecting recovery mode gives me a lot of messages with the last one being "EDD information not available".
The memory test option does not return any errors.
If I try booting Mint from a bootable DVD I get the Mint screen and then it goes gray with a flashing cursor in the top left corner.
Any suggestions?
Hi there everybody,
I am getting really frustrated on a far to trivial problem. I am running ubuntu in virtual box on a windows 7 64bit machine. By default the screen has a resolution of 640x480 and thus only shows the upper left corner of the actual screen, meaning I can't see the entire screen. I was able to figure out, that I have to install guest additions but as soon as I go to devices -> install guest additions I get an error, that the medium couldn't be placed into the drive. It further asks me whether I want to force it to be mounted but if I say "yes" nothing else happens.
Any chance there is a simple way to solve this problem or is this really such a complicated issue?
Furthermore I would prevent linux from going into standby. Actually the settings say, that it will never go to suspend but it does so after it wasn't used for approx=. 5minutes or so.
Thank you guys very much for helping me getting rid of my newbeness :P
Hello,
I'm trying to install Linux computer brand Positive

Hi everyone,
I tried to install Elementary Freya and everything was good, though suddenly while using my laptop I get a black screen. I cannot use the mouse nor the keyboard. When I press the power button, to put the computer in sleep mode, and the open it again, I can see the desktop but cannot do anything.
I tried to use Mint 17.1 and then reinstalled Elementary again but I keep getting the same problem.
I use Linux next to windows 8.1
Thanks in advance, I would appreciate any help
Okay. I got a newer computer to replace one of my two computers. A friend helped me install Xubuntu 14.10. So now I'm trying to get all the software I had on the old one.
In my writing, I write on a laptop. So I have LO 4.2.3.3 on it. So I put 4.2.3.3 on the other two computers, figuring it would be best to have the same versions on all three machines.
Now I have the folder for LO 4.2.3.3 (see screenshot) but don't know how to install it on the newer computer. I have GDebi Package Installer but that only wants to install files. (Unless I open the Debs folder and do 'select all files" and "open" them with the GDebi installer.)
I went to the LO site and they don't offer 4.2.3.3 any more.
Any ideas?
