Which Linux Ibooks Do You Recommend ?

I just bought a refurb computer at the recommendation of a forum member and now I need a manual. Which is the best online ebook to learn Linux for very very beginners! Like ' how to knock the computer on' beginners! A book that doesn't presume I know what a distro is! I'm joining the Linux community and very excited to steep myself in all things Linux but I need to start at the very beginning otherwise I'll end up getting disillusioned by the scale of the Linux dictionary.

Of course I am very Mac competant and not a complete computer unsavvy guy but I believe in order to really know something you have to go back to the basics. Please recommend a basic online books preferably in iBooks.

I look forward to driving you all crazy over the next six months with my ABC questions.

Thanks guys

What Is Context Switching

I'm currently reading Brian Wards book: How Linux Works: What Every Superuser Should Know 2nd edition and I'm confused about step 3 in the context of the other steps:
1. The CPU (the actual hardware) interrupts the current process based on an internal timer, switches into kernel mode, and hands control back to the kernel.

2. The kernel records the current state of the CPU and memory, which will be essential to resuming the process that was just interrupted.

3. The kernel performs any tasks that might have come up during the preceding time slice (such as collecting data from input and output, or I/O, operations).

4. The kernel is now ready to let another process run. The kernel analyzes the list of processes that are ready to run and chooses one.

5. The kernel prepares the memory for this new process, and then prepares the CPU.

6. The kernel tells the CPU how long the time slice for the new process will last.

7. The kernel switches the CPU into user mode and hands control of the CPU to the process.

What does he mean preceding time slice as surely the tasks have been completed during the time slice in steps 1-2?

Command Line IP Printing

Hi Forum,

I have a network printer (HP) running on 192.168.85.24 and I wish to install something that enables me to just shoot pdf och ps files directly to it from the command line, however, it has been hard finding something that describes how to make a bare bones setup like that, the most info I find talk about user interfaces, clicking menues opening web browsers etc, I want things incredibly simple, then they are more robust.

Do you have a tutorial on how to just get an HP-printer to accept ps och or pdf files from the command line?

I run Debian with LXDE and have contact with the printer. (I tested with ping.)

Another question I have is for this forum, do you have a search function? If I had had a search function I would have searched for an answer to the question before posting it.

Kind regards
Johnny

Is It OK To Include Linux Man Pages In Commercial Book?

Hi everyone,

The title of the question pretty much describes it.

I am writing a commercial book and would like to know whether it is OK (as far as licensing is concerned) to include in an appendix the man pages of programs used in the book (none of which is proprietary).

The book itself will NOT be released under the GPL, but assuming I can include the man pages I understand I will need to add a copy of the GPL to the appendix as well.

Any clarification will be more than appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Firefox Assumes My Language Of Choice For E-mail Is French

Whenever I log into Hotmail (and usually when I log into Gmail) as I begin writing everything is marked as mispelled, and when I click on Language, I find it has defaulted to French.

I do occasionally work in French, and I am used to the system fefulting to whichever language I have used more recently, but since the last upgrade to 34.0, it always defaults to French. If I have started with Hotmail, it almost always taks two or three tries to change the default; with Gmail it usually catches on the first try.

I am relatively sure this is a Firefox bug, as it does not occur if I open with Opera.

Any ideas? Or should I just be passing a bug report to Mozilla?

How To Write Other Language, [i.e. 'Kannada'] Word Documents In Linux Mint 17

Hello everybody,

My system specifications: Samsung RV509, i3, 300GB HDD, 3GB Ram, Dual boot Windows7 & LM 17 cinnamon 32bit.

I have OpenOffice preinstalled on my system. I would like to create 'kannada' language word documents and be able to save them as windows .doc type file and/or .pdf file. [Kannada is the language of a state in south India.]

In case of windows; some 'kannada' language softwares called as 'Baraha' and 'Nudi' are available, that can be installed on a windows pc and 'kannada' language word documents can be created there.

These 'kannada' language softwares are not available for Linux.

However I want to be able to create 'kannada' language word documents on my Linux machine.

Is this possible? Could someone please kindly help me in this regard? I would be greatfull.

Thanks & Regards

Anil
