VNC - CentOS 7 Server Login Screen Refresh Preventing Authentication

TigerVNC 1.4.1 CentOS 7 Server on Intel 64 bit vncViewer is running on Windows 7 & 8.1 Using both TigerVNC and Tight VNC viewers The CentOS GUI login screen appears with the correct (su) user name. The screen refreshes ~ twice per second allowing only one character to be entered in the Authentication box before refreshing. I am unable to login remotely via VNC. PuTTY access, etc., works fine.

User Migration Issues

Hello, I'm sort of a novice Linux user and was running into an issue with user migration. I'm trying to migrate users and groups from a RHEL 5.11 install to a CentOS 6.6 install, both systems are 64 bit. Initially I tried to do an rsync of the passwd, shadow, group and gshadow files with no luck. When trying to login with an existing account on the new server I get access denied. I tried to change the password on the new server, but even then it doesn't seem to change the password and I still get access denied. I then tried to tar up the four above files and then extracted them on the new server, but the same issue existed. I also created a new account on the old server, copied all the necessary files over to the new server and still have the same issues. Any ideas what I may be doing wrong or what I can try next? This is getting frustrating!

Thanks!

Proftpd Userlist Creation With New Idea

Hello,

I just configured proftpd and it's working fine, but i had a doubt "How to create a new user list" and also how to create a new login form by that clients can create their own account without the knowledge of admin, and the information about the user need to store in server. Anyone tried the above scenario? If yes please let me know how!

Help With KDE

Hello, I am new to Linux and I am having difficulty setting up KDE. I have a vps with Debian 7 Wheezy on it and I need to get KDE working on it. The Linux installation from the vps company was very basic...I had to update the packages and install kde and kdm using the apt-get install kde and apt-get install kdm commands. When I type xstart to start the x server I get a message with the version number and other information so I am assuming that it is installed, but at the bottom of the message I have no cursor (I am able to type but when I hit the enter key after entering a command nothing happens) and the # is no longer there so I am unable to continue working. The only way i can get the command prompt and # back is to close Putty and reopen it (then I have to log into the vps all over again). From what I have read online, when I type startx, it should load KDE.

I was able to set the display by using the export DISPLAY=:0.0 command. But when I type startkde I get the message 'No protocol specified" and the next line says DISPLAY not set or unable to connect to xserver.

I have been using Putty to log into the vps, but yesterday I decided to use the web based login utility offered by the vps company. When connecting to the vps in this manner I am presented with a traditional looking login screen (I am assuming it is KDM). The user name that was provided to me from the vps company is 'root' ...well, when I try to login using KDM (the plasma setting) I get an error stating that 'root' logins are not allowed. Considering that the KDM is visible when logging in using the web based utility, I have a feeling that the KDE is also working...but I can't log into it because the user name is 'root' . However, when I use Putty I cant seem to get anything to load and start the way it is supposed to. I would appreciate any help in getting the KDE to work in Putty and the login via the web based utility to accept my username that the vps company gave me. Thank you.

Samba-Apache-Webdav Permission Problem With User Www-data

I'm not sure if this should be in the newbie section, but I am somewhat of a newbie, so here goes:

In a home network, I have an Xubuntu file server with a Samba share that has me as the owner and authorizes me to access the share.

On another computer, I have Mint running and providing various services, including webdav on Apache with SSL. In the var/www/webdav directory of the Mint computer, I have the Xubuntu Samba share mounted. This is supposed to allow me to access the Samba share from the public internet.

Everything works fine except for one big problem: Apache requires the owner of the webdav directory to be user "www-data," and I can't figure out how to give www-data access to the Samba share, since www-data is not a user on the Xubuntu computer, and moreover I don't know the password for user www-data.

Can anyone figure out how to get around this problem? In particular, is there a way to configure the Samba share on the Xubuntu computer so that user www-data on the Mint computer can have access to it?

(Incidentally, I have my reasons for using two computers, one as a file server and one as a web server. Also, I am thinking about switching to NFS instead of Samba, but I'm not sure if even that would solve my problem.)

Best Way To Manage Users And Accounts Etc

hi guys,

busy doing a small project with a centos7 server and virtualbox.
currently i have a login to the physical server called sninja

i have three partitions created for each of my virtual machines
sninja owns the directories for each vm...and root is the primary group...now lets say i wanted to have other users perform functions on my vm's ..ssh in,rsync data into the vm etc...

whats the best way to address security and user accounts etc?

what i was thinking:

create a group called Myusers1,then assign the users to that group and then make the group the primary group of the accessed directories etc

is this the right way to go about it? any ideas or help really appreciated...

Samba Configuration Not Letting Me Access Files?

Hey guys, I got samba working and I am able to access my files, however I am now trying to learn security with it. i am pretty much trying to allow certain groups access certain files. if you look at samba group you can see that I have @sambausers group to access sambagroup directory.

I have a user called sambatest01. the user can access "samba users only" but the user can access all of the other files as well. what is a correct set up on the other smb.conf to prevent users from accessing this? I cant seem to find a proper set up

[drivers]
path = /files/drivers
browseable = yes
read only = no
guest ok = no
guest only = no

[samba users only]
path = /files/sambagroup
browseable = yes
read only = no
guest ok = no
guest only = no
write list = @sambausers
valid users = @sambausers
