Jumping From Windows 7 To Linux: Home User

Hello

As a learning experience, I want to jump from Windows 7 to Linux full time on my laptop. This isn't because of some antiWindows bullshit or because its free or anything like that. I just want to learn the ins and outs of Linux like I pretty much know on Windows.

I plan to go with Ubuntu. LTS or latest stable version? Thoughts?

First off, compatibility. I do need that all my hardware on my laptop be compatible. From shortcut keys to wifi. This is not a brand new laptop so there shouldn't be any problems. Its a Dell Vostro 1510.

Next, software. Basically on this laptop software I use in and out: uTorrent, Teamviewer, WMP, mIRC, Skype, vSphere Client, Microsoft Office......That's pretty much it IMO. Also Facebook and YouTube (Flash) are a must. I will run all this software in WINE. I don't want (most) of the Linux ports. Im not looking to replace programs I like and use daily. Just looking to replace the operating system.

Next, virtualization. Due to some things (like Office) cannot be ran in Linux, I use a VM. VMWare with its unity feature pretty much gives me what I want.

Next, streaming. I need to be able to stream media from a WS2012R2 to this Linux installation. Special setup?

Anything that is blowing over me, please mention.

Thank you

Add Files To A PXE Image

Hello,

I am new to Linux images (pxe, livecd). I would like to add files to a linux image, like something under etc or var, and have the files be available on the client.
The server I am working on was already configured with a pxe image, and only 2 files are present under the pxe client folder: initrd and vmlinuz. So I am wondering if either of these files contain the dirs /etc, /var, etc..., and how I could add files to them.

To give some background, I have done the same thing in Windows. An image in Windows is typically either boot.img or install.img. You can mount either of these to a folder using the Windows SDK tool imagex.exe /mountrw <img file> 1 <mount point>. From here you can add/remove/modify any files you want. Then commit the changes with imagex.exe /unmount <mountpoint> /commit.

Can someone provide insight to the linux image creation process, which of the files (initrd, vmlinuz/vmlinux, etc...) contain what for the client boot, or something similar to the Windows Image editing process?

I know I'm asking for a range of info, but pointers to any material to help my understanding will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Jon

To Rotate An Image With Minimum Changes In Its Pixels

I am doing a project on Image Watermarking using Discrete Wavelet Transform. I have done with watermarked image,Now I am attacking image with attack like rotation. My question is that when I apply function imrotate to the watermarked image, all the pixels that are not included in the rotated image becomes zero as it is property of imrotate. Due to this I got very low PSNR between Original Image and rotated Watermarked image.

My question is-I want to rotate the image but also need to have high value of PSNR after rotation. Is there any method that after rotation all or most pixels of rotated image resembles with pixels of original image.

Shortcoming of imrotate ie zero value of pixels outside rotated area can be removed by which method???????????????

Installing Software On 100 Computers At Once

A real newbie question he

Suppose you must install new software (let's say Microsoft Office) on 100 computers. Must you go from computer to computer to install this new software or is there a faster (centralized?) way to do this?

Skype 4.3 Not Listing Microphone From Microsoft LifeCam

CrossOver Or Wine (or Other Interface)

Sorry in advance, I first posted the question in the Software Forum, considering there were no replies I thought maybe it was a newb error.

So here goes..

HI everyone,

I am trying to find a way to ditch MS OS's, however, at the present time I Need MS Office, without using a VM, is there a piece of software that you would recommend I install that would enable me to keep my Linux OS (MInt-Mate), and install Office 2010+ (I know WIne works well with older Office versions).

Any and all ideas are greatly appreciated.

ps. Trial and error is fine, for that reason alone I have a laptop-labrat I Use.

Thanks again.

File Manager Folder Properties

In Windows, when a folder is right clicked, I can see the number of files and folders in that folder and the detailed size of the total of files and folders down to the byte. In Linux Mint when I do the same thing in the default file manager, it gives me a total nunber of "Items" and a size rounded to xx.x GB. Is there a file manager that will give me the same information as Windows does, or another way to get that information?

Please Help Me Develop My Laptop Into Something Better.

I have a Dell Latitude E5440. It currently is Running Windows 7 pro. I want to change this machine into a customized Linux Workstation. In order to that right I need to get all my device drivers copied from Dells Website I want to then figure out if these drivers would work for linux.
I then want to create a virtual windows desktop to run all and not limited to:

Microsoft visual Studio
Ableton live (DAW)
Auto Desk Inventor
Mentor Graphics PAD
Adobe Photoshop
Adobe Premier
Red Giant Special Effects suites (various)
Quark Express
ICOM Radio Programming software
Microsoft Office
Just to name a few programs I want to run on my windows virtual desktop.
I wont ever take the virtual desktop online. I also want to have a highly secured system where permissions have to be signed for anything. Meaning that my windows desktop is virtually helpless in screwing with the rest of my system.

SO I will need a good open source O.S. and many links for the device drivers I need and how to change them to work.

Please explain things clearly with precise directions and links. I haven't flashed my bios yet and installed DBAN. I will when I feel I have all my ducks in a Row and I am ready to create a monster laptop. please email me directly
