Sharing Internet Through Data Cable From A Mobile That Is Already Sharing Via Wifi

Hello everybody,

I am seeking help regarding sharing internet connection. I would be greatful.

I have;
A Laptop : Samsung RV509, i3, 300GB HDD, 3GB Ram, Dual boot Windows7 & LM 17 cinnamon 32bit. WiFi & Bluetooth available. A Desktop PC : Celeron CPU 2.4GHZ, 40 GB HDD, 1GB RAM, LiveUSB-LM 17 cinnamon 32bit, No WiFi hardware available, No Bluetooth hardware available. A mobile phone : Nokia Asha 500, WiFi & Bluetooth available. An old USB data cable: with which the mobile phone can be connected to the computers. I have successfully connected and transfered data back & forth, and also shared/connected Mobile-Broadband-internet to both Laptop and Desktop.

What I have been doing now is; I have an internet connection to my Laptop with an external modem and Ethernet. Its working fine. I have an unlimited plan and so I want to share this internet connection on the mobile phone too; instead of incuring extra cost by connecting to the internet directly through the phone. I am successful at that. I can share this internet connection on my phone through WiFi.

Now, what I want to do is; without buying any extra hardware, to share this same internet connection on my Desktop PC, too.

What I tried is; I searched the web, but didn't find any solution. Now I am here. Please kindly help me.

Thank you & Regards

Anil

Not Able To Connect To Internet Via 3G Router From Linux

Hello, My issue is very common but, not able to resolve it.

Issue I am facing with my Linux (RHEL-5 32-bit) machine, where I am not able to connect to internet.

DWR-113 - D-Link Router is configured for 3G dongle (Vodafone India) - This setup is done via WiFi and not using the provided LAN cable from Win7 machine.

Internet is working absolutely fine in case of Wireless but, at same time when LAN cable is used internet is not working. [Able to ping to Router IP i.e. 192.168.0.1)

Similarly, from Linux box, ping to Router IP is working [LAN plugged] but, Internet not working. IP of linux machine: 192.168.0.60

Also, able to get the console connection of Linux from Windows box..[Windows connected to Router via WiFi and Linux connected to Router via LAN cable]

Please suggest how to get rid of this problem so that Internet will work on Linux via LAN cable.

Many Thanks,

Should I Post In The Software Or Hardware Section For This Problem?

To prevent spamming your awesome forum, and to most efficiently find an answer to my problem, should I post my problem in the hardware or software sub-forum?

I am having a problem with a new video card I installed: The nvidia driver for my GTX 570 will not load properly. Because it is a new video card and prevents me from using my monitor properly, I feel like it should go in 'hardware'. On the other hand, because it is a driver problem, I feel like it should go in 'software'.

Because I don't have much experience in this forum, I wasn't sure and thought it would be best to ask for now as well as future reference.

Thank you in advance!

Live Linux Distro With More Wifi Drivers

Hello,

I am looking for a live linux distro that is able to recognize more hardware by "default" without installation. For example, when I borrow a laptop/netbook, I want to be able to boot the live linux distro and be able to have wireless access to internet (at least most of the time).

I know how to get the wireless working if I have internet access to begin with, but sometimes I do not have a wired connection or am not allowed to install stuff.

I would like to try many live distros on different laptops, but it would be hard to convince other people to give me their laptops to do that; so I would really appreciate your help.

Thanks

Upgrading Hardware In Mandrake 9.2

Good Morning/Afternoon/Evening

As my subject line states I am trying to upgrade the MOBO/CPU/RAM on a system that has Mandrake 9.2 as the OS. Everything is terribly outdated on it, but unfortunately the OS is running a custom program that I did not develop and talking to the developer seems to be an impossible task. I have no working knowledge of any Linux based OS, so I am trying to get pointed in the right direction on possible troubleshooting that may occur. The system is not connected to the internet so it wont be able to automatically update the necessary drivers that I already know. I haven't gone forward with the upgrades as of yet, one because I am waiting on the CPU to arrive and two because my lack of knowledge makes me hesitant. I know that someone is thinking why not just upgrade the OS, the reason behind that is because I am unsure on if the custom software will even run on it. Any help would be appreciated.

tl;dr
Will I be able to just plug and play the new hardware as long I have the correct drivers?

Enlarged Desktop And Internet Browser

OK, this is probably something really basic, but my power went out for a minute yesterday. Later when I turned the computer back on, my desktop was enlarged and so is internet browser, and the resolution is bad (like if I use google maps). It's been like that ever since when I turn it on. This used to happen on my Windows XP when it would start up in safe mode. I went onto display settings and readjusted the size of the tool bar, but the screen and file icons and internet are still enlarged. Anyone know what I'm talking about, or what to do? It also says "display unknown" when I check the settings. Thanks.

Update Grub Command Not Working

I have made a change to GRUB2 bootloader in etc/default/grub.
Now I need to run 'update grub' for the change to take effect.
However, the 'update grub' command on the terminal is giving this error message:
Code:
root@debian:/# update grub
bash: update: command not found

Can someone please explain why this command is no longer working?

I've had to make a change to grub because I tried to install a new distro which meant I had to alter grub.
The install wasn't successful so I deleted the grub file and then re-installed it.
The re-installed grub needs a change so I can get sound on my pc.
However, I can't add these changes because the 'update grub' command doesn't work.

I've checked the grub file with another debian distro and they are both the same.
So now I don't know if I need to check if a different grub file is the problem or anything else.
Can someone help?

No Sound ALSA On Ubuntu 12.04

Hi I a running Ubunto 12.04 on a HP PC with an onboard intel analaog sound card

(ALC662) and a HDMI connection into my TV.
I use this PC for Mythtv and Kodi using the sound over HDMI which works a treat in MythTV however I cannot get the sound to work on Kodi, Firefox or any other app which I presume is down to misconfigured ALSA setup, I had this working previously but it stopped and I am not sure why, possible updates.
