Bash: Permission Denied Error

Linux Newbie here...running Ubuntu 14.04 LTS

Downloaded a couple of binaries/executables to the Downloads directory. ./command runs just fine but copying the binaries to /bin or /usr/bin says permission denied. I used chmol

After digging a bit more, realized that my FS is being mounted as read only!. Not sure why. /etc/fstab says UUID=8559f1a0-60e0-47e4-922d-9175f282fa8a / ext4 errors=remount-ro 0 1

Something is not right with the filesystem and I am not sure how to fix it.

Thanks
Raj

Cannot Get Root To Work

I have been getting permission denied issues when trying to log into as root. I have set my password and when I type su - root and enter in my password I keep getting either password incorrect when I know I am typing it in correctly or acess permission denied from su. Can anyone explain what I am doing wrong. I am trying to get into /etc/passwd for homework assignment and I get permission denied when logged in as my user. Any help will be great. I have in the past been able to logg in to root but now I cant seem to get into it. This is a new install of ubuntu 14

550 Permission Denied Vsftpd

Hi, I'm having trouble configuring my vsftpd version 2.2.2 on Centos 6.6. I successfully log in, but I cannot make any changes (creating files, directories, whatever):
ftp> mkdir t
550 Permission denied.
ftp>

This is how my vsftp.conf looks:
Code:
anonymous_enable=NO
local_enable=YES
local_umask=022
dirmessage_enable=YES
listen=YES
pam_service_name=virtual-ftp
userlist_enable=YES
userlist_file=/etc/vsftpd.user_list
userlist_deny=NO
tcp_wrappers=YES
write_enable=YES
guest_enable=YES
guest_username=ftp
local_root=/mnt/storage/ftp

All users are mapped to the ftp user. /mnt/storage/ftp is owned by ftp and there are no permission problems (the mount point is /mnt/storage). I use pam for authentication, which seems to be working fine from what I can tell from the logs and the fact that I can log in, of course.

/mnt/storage is a linux partition and it's mounted like this:
/dev/sdb5 /mnt/storage ext4 defaults 0 0

Which is really unimportant, because I tried to use the root partition also, and I get the same problem.

On some site someone suggested allow_writeable_chroot=YES, but this directive is not identified by vsftpd.

I kind of ran out of ideas. Any suggestions?

Permission Denied When Trying To Execute An Application On A SD Card

Hi,
I made some little applications with qt creator and i wanted to run them on an embedded linux board (linux 2.6.24). To transfer the files i use a SD card. If i move the applications to "/bin" after having mounted the SD card and then "chmod a+x" them then i have no problem running them.
But if i mount the SD card and try to run the applications directly in the folder where i mount it i have an error : "Permission denied". Also when using the command "ls" i notice that if i keep the files in the mounting folder and try to "chmod a+x" them, the modification don't happen. They stay "greyed" and don't go "green". (I don't know if this color code is a standart for linux terminal but maybe this could help you understand the problem).
When mounting the SD card i use the command :
Code:
mount -t vfat /dev/mmcblk0p1 /mnt/SD

So the files are located in /mnt/SD.

Am i missing something or is it not possible to run something like that ?

EDIT :
I tried "mount -t vfat -o umask=0000 /dev/mmcblk0p1 /mnt/SD" to chnage how i am mounting the SD card.

Still "Permission Denied".

With "ls -l" i can see that the permissions are staying :
-rw-rw-rw-

Even if i try something like "chmod 777".

It seems to be a problem related to the fact that the sd card is formated as fat32 but it must stay like that.

Rsync Copy Permission Denied

hi experts

I am rsyncing a user's home dir across the NFS and the local PC, but when it tries to copy over the hidden files it fails with permission denied. Both dir are owned by the proper user and I am root when I execute the script, so I am not sure what went wrong here.
For example: this is the content and permissions of the source:

-rw------- 1 user test 115 Nov 14 11:28 .bash_history

and here is my error:

rsync: send_files failed to open "/home/user/.bash_history": Permission denied (13)

Thanks

How To Remount Root Partition On System Booted From External Usb Drive

Hello,
I have a setup with arch linux installed on external ssd as normal (non-live) installation.
I had to do that after my main laptop was broken. I don't want to put my drive into the new hardware, so I run it as external one for until the main will be repaired.

It boots as usual, everything is working fine until the usb drive reconnects for some reason (may be the physical connection problem). It probably mounts itself as read-only, the system freaks out and dies slowly from I/O errors process by process. I cannot issue commands from shell, even reboot. I have to physically reset the machine.

Is there a way to change its behaviour to auto remount as rw after reconnecting the USB and just keep running as usual?

I think the fstab is the file that i should modify, but cannot find a way how to do it properly. Please correct me if I'm wrong. My current fstab:
Code:
#
# /etc/fstab: static file system information
#
# <file system>	<dir> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
# /dev/sdb2
UUID=145b3c51-6531-48f3-a79b-fb1ae238c7ee / ext4 rw,relatime,data=ordered 0 1

# /dev/sdb1
UUID=AFC4-6899 /boot vfat rw,relatime,fmask=0022,dmask=0022,codepage=437,iocharset=iso8859-1,shortname=mixed,errors=remount-ro 0 2

/swapfile none swap defaults 0 0

Using Find And Pipe To Tar

am trying to use tar in combination with find, the goal is to all files in /export that have been modified in the last 24 hours (back up purposes), then tar them so I can untar on the backup server, updating just the modified files.

Perhaps there is a better way, however, I have tried using cpio but the problem come in when I copy to the NAS drive (NTFS) I lose all my owner/group and permissions. I have found that if I tar the files, then copy them to the NAS, when I untar on the server, it will retain the owner/group and permissions.

So… here is what I have tried:

First, I use the find command to see what files should be in the tar archive.
Code:
/export $ find . -depth -mtime 0 -print
./file4
./file3
.

Ok, that looks right, now I will try to pipe that in to tar
Code:
/export $ find . -depth -mtime 0 -print0 | tar -czvf backup.tar.gz --null -T -
./file4
./file3
./
./share/
./share/pdf/
./share/pdf/penny-2014-09-03-11:41.30.pdf
./share/pdf/penny-2014-09-03-14:25.17.pdf
./share/pdf/penny-2014-09-03-11:24.36.pdf
./share/pdf/penny-2014-09-03-14:37.12.pdf
tar: ./share/pdf/.directory: Cannot open: Permission denied
./share/pdf/penny-2014-09-02-14:52.06.pdf
./share/pdf/penny-2014-09-03-12:18.43.pdf
tar: ./share/PDF: Cannot open: Permission denied
./share/file3
tar: ./share/.directory: Cannot open: Permission denied
./dir1/
./dir1/file1
./file4
./file2
./file3
tar: ./.directory: Cannot open: Permission denied
./list
tar: Exiting with failure status due to previous errors

It seems that it is trying to tar all the files in that directory. When I view the files in backup.tar.gz all of the files from /export are in there not just the modified ones

Fuse Mount Point - Permission Denied

Hi everyone,

I created a fuse mountpoint. After mounting, the file permissions are all screwed up and it says I cannot ls or cd. Permission denied.

The file permissions look like this:
d????????? ? ? ? ? ? temp

and when i list the mounted devices I get:
/dev/fuse on /temp type fuse (rw,nosuid,nodev)

I used mono-fuse. I just created a new folder with permissions 777 and then did a mount. After unmounting I can do all operations, but when I mount, I get such error.

I used
HelloFS.exe that comes along with mono fuse for testing. Can someone shed some light on this weird behavior and what mistake ive done. Thank you !!

Help Mounting A CD-R/DVD-R, Then Using Dd To Write To Them.

I can't seem to mount a CD-R or DVD-R, doesn't matter if it is blank or not.
However, when I use a program such as Brasero, I am able to write to them. I cannot use dd to write to them.

This is the output of trying to mount/unmount.
Code:
root@delarocha-> mount /dev/sr0 /media/cd
mount: /dev/sr0 is write-protected, mounting read-only
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sr0,
       missing codepage or helper program, or other error
       In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
       dmesg | tail or so.

root@delarocha-> umount /dev/sr0
umount: /dev/sr0: not mounted
root@delarocha-> umount /media/cd
umount: /media/cd: not mounted
root@delarocha-> umount /media/cdrom
umount: /media/cdrom: not mounted

dmesg | tail
Code:
root@delarocha-> dmesg | tail
[ 1536.299777] sr 1:0:0:0: [sr0]
[ 1536.299804] Result: hostbyte=DID_OK driverbyte=DRIVER_SENSE
[ 1536.299809] sr 1:0:0:0: [sr0]
[ 1536.299814] Sense Key : Illegal Request [current]
[ 1536.299820] sr 1:0:0:0: [sr0]

[ 1536.299846] end_request: I/O error, dev sr0, sector 0
[ 1536.299915] EXT4-fs (sr0): unable to read superblock

I don't think it can be anything wrong with the disk, since it is a untouched disk.
Note: The results of everything(apart from dmesg I would assume), are the same for a CD-R and DVD-R

This is what I get while trying to dd a .iso and .mp4, respectively.

Code:
web@delarocha-> dd if=/dev/sr0 of=~/Downloads/xubuntu-14.04.1-desktop-amd64.iso
0+0 records in
0+0 records out
0 bytes (0 B) copied, 0.000377316 s, 0.0 kB/s

Code:
web@delarocha-> dd if=/dev/sr0 of=~/Videos/The\ Hobbit/The\ Hobbit\ The\ Desolation\ of\ Smaug.mp4
0+0 records in
0+0 records out
0 bytes (0 B) copied, 0.000377179 s, 0.0 kB/s

uname -a
Code:
Linux delarocha 3.16.0-4-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 3.16.7-ckt2-1 (2014-12-08) x86_64 GNU/Linux

When I used lsblk when I close the disk tray, it shows it mounted.
Code:
sr0                     11:0    1     2K  0 rom

But after I use the dd command to write the .iso, it disappears.

Here is my /etc/fstab
Code:
# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
# Use 'blkid' to print the universally unique identifier for a
# device; this may be used with UUID= as a more robust way to name devices
# that works even if disks are added and removed. See fstab(5).
#
# <file system> <mount point>   <type>  <options>       <dump>  <pass>
/dev/mapper/delarocha-root /               ext4    errors=remount-ro 0       1
# /boot was on /dev/sda1 during installation
UUID=5bbedec0-6e3d-4185-91e0-292a72585908 /boot           ext2    defaults        0       2
/dev/mapper/delarocha-swap_1 none            swap    sw              0       0
/dev/sr0        /media/cdrom0   udf,iso9660 user,noauto     0       0
/dev/sdb1       /media/usb0     auto    rw,user,noauto  0       0

I have also tried replacing /dev/sr0 in the above commands with /media/cdrom0.

To Install Different Ns2 Versions On My System

hello kudfl,

I was working on ns2.32 . But now i require ns2.34 also . I read some of threads and found it is possible to have two diffrent ns2 versions on the same machine.
Installed ns2.32 and ns2.34 in diffrent directories.
Installed successfully . when i type ns % sign appears . But i dont know which ns version it is running ?

i read ur thread 2 on the following link
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...ne-4175503576/

so i delete the path varibale for ns2.32 from bashrc file .
and did the following
ns-2.32/ : $ cp ns ns-orig
cp ns-orig /usr/local/bin/
but it is giving me error : permission denied .
