I'm New To Linux....questions Compiling A Small Source Code

Hi Everybody.....
I'm new to this site and new to Linux ( Ubuntu 12.04) generally. I am an old goat mechanical engineer with years of electronic instrumentation design experience. I am connecting several of my old HP digital oscilloscopes and logic analyzers to a Ubuntu box via GPIB (ieee 488) interface. I have the interface working well using the open source ( Sourceforge) "Linux-GPIB" kernel module. I can remotely control the instruments using "Linux-GPIB"'s "ibterm" terminal utility. However "ibterm" doesn't provide a means to do a scope screen dump to a file. A guy on EEBLOG published a short C language 30 line source code to perfome this function. Unfortunately it isn't a package with makefile.am, makefile .in, configure etc which I understand I could compile using the typical ./config, make, checkinstall procedure. It is just the c source code text. Soooo.....do I use gcc directly? If so, how do I run gcc in a manner to be able to uninstall all the various files it will make? Or ?? What is the procedure for automake in this situation ? Or....? I'm kind of lost. Your suggestions would be helpful.
Cheers.

.o: File Not Recognized: File Format Not Recognized When Compiling

Hello,

I am working on a board (sbc6000x with at91sam9261 micro, linux 2.6.24 to be precise) and having some fun making script i wanted to make real application.
The board is coming with a cross compilation toolchain. When trying to make a simple "hello world" executable to print on the terminal there is no problem.
I open my terminal, give the path of the compiler, cd into the folder where my .c file is and then i type :
Code:
arm-linux-gcc -o hello hello.c

Which create my executable "hello" and this one is working. But like i said, this program only played with the terminal.

The board is starting with a script calling another executable which use the lcd display, i have the source of this executable. My idea was to look at what was in the source of this application (lots of folders and files) in order to understand how it was working. I wanted to test the toolchain on the source (with the makefile) to see if i was able to generate an executable from a application with folderS/fileS but when i try to "make" it i have this error.

In my understanding this is an object file but aside from that i don't see why it would not works.

Thank you for your future answers !

Error In Running Leach_test In NS-2.34

Hi all,

I am trying to simulate leach on NS2 but I've had problems with running the leach_test. I've followed all steps from installing NS2 up to installing the LEACH patch (used the latest one from exidus). Here's the error message in the leach.err I found.

Need To Install The N53 PCI Network Card From Asus Without Installing Anything Before

Hi

I am new to kali linux and have got a fresh install with all the current updates (without any new repositories). I am really interested in aircrack and wifi exploitation. But before i can do any of that i need to install my second network adapter, the asus n53 pcie. I am able to type this because my motherboard came with its own intergrated wifi adapter, the aetheros (something). That was working out of the box as soon as kali linux was installed, however i need a proper network adapter (the n53) to make use of my 3rd party long range antenna (it can pick up networks over 600m away ).

I am attempting to install my asus n53 pcie network adapter but have had no success at all, most likely because i have no idea what to do once i have extracted the driver. Currently it is sitting in my home folder. It has a few folders and files in it, with these being the folders

(chips, common, include, os, rate_ctrl, sta and tools)

and these being the files

(iwpriv_usage.txt, makefile, readme_sta_pci, rt2860STA.dat, rt2860staCarddat, sta_ate_iwpriv_usage.txt.)

In the readme file it says this in the instructions:

1> $tar -xvzf DPB_RT2860_Linux_STA_x.x.x.x.tgz
go to "./DPB_RT2860_Linux_STA_x.x.x.x" directory.

2> In Makefile
set the "MODE = STA" in Makefile and chose the TARGET to Linux by set "TARGET = LINUX"
define the linux kernel source include file path LINUX_SRC
modify to meet your need.

3> In os/linux/config.mk
define the GCC and LD of the target machine
define the compiler flags CFLAGS
modify to meet your need.

4> $make

# $/sbin/ifconfig ra0 inet YOUR_IP up

#[kernel 2.6]
# $/sbin/insmod rt2860sta.ko
# $/sbin/ifconfig ra0 inet YOUR_IP up

7> unload driver
$/sbin/ifconfig ra0 down
$/sbin/rmmod rt2860sta

And this to me looks like another language. I would GREATLY APPRECIATE IT if someone could give me step by step instructions on how to install this, without skipping on anything. I will even pay 10000 dogecoin if someone helps me! I have been searching youtube tutorials for 3 hours (lol) for it and havent found anything. Please help me!

Thanks

Gfortran: Attribute That Requires Explicit Interface ???

Hi there,

Trying to compile a few Gfortran lines in Ubuntu 12.04 I get this error:

Quote:
lun = newunit(unit)
1
Error: Dummy argument 'unit' of procedure 'newunit' at (1) has an attribute that requires an explicit interface for this procedure
The number one in fact points to the word "unit" not "lun" in the terminal. It got left-shifted when posted.

The code itself:

Code:
program main
  INTEGER*4 counter,lun,unit
  REAL*8, parameter :: pi = 3.141592653589793
  unit = 10
  lun = newunit(unit)
  ...................
end program main

What does it all mean and how shall I change the code to compile it without an error?

Thanks, - A.

GRUB2 Scripts To Use Labels For Friendly Names

I am using linux mint and the grub menu gets configured automatically using scripts in /etc/grub.d. The menuentry that gets created is something like Code:
"linux mint (on /dev/sda1)"

. I use external drives sometimes and also have linux on my harddrive which I also switch between computers. It gets confusing when it says /dev/sda2 when it means something else. It boots fine because that actual boot command uses uuid. How can I change the text of the (script generated) description to also use partition labels or uuid (or the first few chars) just so I know which install will actually boot. like this: Code:
"Linux Mint (OFFICESSD)"
"Linux Mint (HOMEHDD)"
"Ubuntu (SANDISK)"
"Ubuntu (IMATION)"

I realise (maybe its the best way) I can change the "GRUB_TITLE=Linux Mint 17 Cinnamon 64-bit" in /etc/linuxmint/info but would rather a smoother way.

The Problem Of Learning Linux

They say there are no secrets in Linux. I am finding that learning about Linux is becoming a life long experience. I have just started using a Debian distribution that is behind the Raspberry pi. My first problem was that the display would go to sleep after about 15 mins when not used. I wanted to turn this feature off. That is I wanted the display to be on all the time.
After some web searching I came across a way to do this. It involved a file in the root area called "lightdm" which stands for light display manager (I think).
Then under this as a file called the lightdm.conf file. Just one line in the config file gets modified. Now doing this via the monkey see monkey do method works. But trying to find out how this works and exactly what the cryptic commands do, ends up being a frustrating endless search. I tried to find the source code for lightdm buts its documentation is certainly not for beginners.
I tried finding out what a "greeter" was once again huge amounts of time spent trying to make sense of endless terminology.

It seems that nowadays trying to learn about the details of any software system is just so hard. Like try and find good documentation on drivers.
Don't get me wrong I love the fact that at least Linux is open source but I wish there was an easy way to learn about it.

Problem With (instalation Of?) Mysql.h On C

Hi, I've just recently installed MySQL connector/c from source code on my Slackware 14.1 x64

I read the official instructions of the connector but I felt a bit disorientated when I read:
Code:
1 -Change location to the top-level directory of the source distribution.

I interpreted that I have to go to the "highest" directory Code:
/

So I wrote: Code:

        # cd /

root@- /# tar xzvf /home/normal/Downloads/mysql-connector-c-6.1.6-src.tar.gz

root@- /# cd /mysql-connector-c-6.1.6-src/

root@- /mysql-connector-c-6.1.6-src# cmake -G "Unix Makefiles"

root@- /mysql-connector-c-6.1.6-src# make

root@- /mysql-connector-c-6.1.6-src# make install

Then I did:
Code:
ln -s /usr/local/mysql-5.6.25/include /usr/include

But when I try to compile a program in c with #include <mysql.h> i get this error:
Code:
# gcc ctemp.c
In file included from ctemp.c:2:0:
/usr/include/mysql.h:57:27: fatal error: mysql_version.h: No such file or directory
 #include "mysql_version.h"
                           ^

What can I do? Thanks a lot and sorry for poor english

PD: If you need the official instructions I paste here the link: https://dev.mysql.com/doc/connector-...on-source.html

Permission Denied When Trying To Execute An Application On A SD Card

Hi,
I made some little applications with qt creator and i wanted to run them on an embedded linux board (linux 2.6.24). To transfer the files i use a SD card. If i move the applications to "/bin" after having mounted the SD card and then "chmod a+x" them then i have no problem running them.
But if i mount the SD card and try to run the applications directly in the folder where i mount it i have an error : "Permission denied". Also when using the command "ls" i notice that if i keep the files in the mounting folder and try to "chmod a+x" them, the modification don't happen. They stay "greyed" and don't go "green". (I don't know if this color code is a standart for linux terminal but maybe this could help you understand the problem).
When mounting the SD card i use the command :
Code:
mount -t vfat /dev/mmcblk0p1 /mnt/SD

So the files are located in /mnt/SD.

Am i missing something or is it not possible to run something like that ?

EDIT :
I tried "mount -t vfat -o umask=0000 /dev/mmcblk0p1 /mnt/SD" to chnage how i am mounting the SD card.

Still "Permission Denied".

With "ls -l" i can see that the permissions are staying :
-rw-rw-rw-

Even if i try something like "chmod 777".

It seems to be a problem related to the fact that the sd card is formated as fat32 but it must stay like that.
