i am new to this site. And this is my first question .I am having one one unusual doubt as i am using the linux for the first time which flavor would be better to use. somehow i managed to get a mint flavor .
I just tried Mint again and its still not up to what I need. So, can I install another linux to replace Mint and not loose my win7?
2, 3, and 5 years ago, I tried linux and once I realized it did not do what i needed, I tried to remove it (taking advice from the forums) and I lost access to win7. I dont want that to happen again.
How should I proceed?

Hey guys, im a long time Mac user but I want to have a Linux computer in my office for web based stuff and fixing hard drives.... I'm going to buy a used computer from eBay to install my Linux software as I believe that Linux is a lot faster than Mac or windows and doesnt need the latest hardware to compete.
In order to be at least as fast as a windows computer but no more than $100. What range of computer should I be looking at? What specs should I look for? And once I get it should I run Ubuntu or mint for web based things and hard drive repair? As you no doubt know, the Linux lingo is a bit difficult sometimes so please bear with me. I'm doing the best I can.
Weird question I know, but I'm sure you know what I mean.
First time Linux Mint user and fist time poster to this forum. Need to install a Linux distro on my family member's HP Mini 1000, an older netbook with minimal hardware (1 GB memory stick, Intel Atom N270 processor, 80 GB ATA HDD, and it runs XP SP3. . I advised her to uninstall XP and buy Windows 7, but she doesn't want to spend the $93. So ...
I have been testing different Linux distros from flash drive on my HP Probook 4530S laptop. Have tried Ubuntu 14x and now Mint, which I prefer. Ubuntu wouldn't boot to desktop on the netbook after choosing "Use without installing." Mint runs OK on it, but I can't configure the wireless connection. I suspect that either the network hardware isn't compatible or I am missing something when trying to manually configure the settings. I read some info from the Mint web site about this issue, but not sure about whether the Mini's wireless card is compatible: Broadcom 802.11b/g WLAN. Does updating Windows drivers help with this?
TIA,
Don
Since I have not found a solution to my intermittent boot problem I'm thinking of reinstalling Linux Mint, switching to a different Linux distribution, or turning back to the dark side, i.e. Windows. This was my first Linux install and I was really impressed with the OS and the applications. I like Linux Mint but I want a reliable computer and if I cannot even get it to boot properly then that's a long-term concern.
The problem with a reinstall of Linux Mint is that I don't know what to do differently. I don't know what, if anything, I did wrong the first time. Of course, switching to a different distribution is also a crap shoot since I don't know what went wrong with Mint. I don't really want to go back to Windows but it's been a stable, reliable OS for me for years.
Anyone have any advice?
When I run update manager in linux Mint Mate why does it give me updates for other desktops in Linux Mint? Is it necessary to download these in Mate? Some are listed as 1 priority. Thanks for any answers to this question.

hi All,
i tried to make a bootable linux mint usb. i thought i succeeded but when i pull out the usb and try to boot back into windows i still boot into linux mint. this is probably a stupid question but have installed linux mint over my windows mistakenly.
help....please
I am trying to boot Linux Mint from an 8gb Sandisk USB. I changed my boot settings and it boots into what I believe is called grub? I am given two options, Boot Linux Mint, Boot Linux Mint (compatibility mode). When I select either of them all I get is a black screen. I've tried many things to get around this, messing with my graphics card settings (within grub), different USB's (another 8gb and a 32gb), I tried Ubuntu and that just doesn't boot at all I go straight back to my UEFI settings. I'm very new to Linux and I don't just want to hop in, I just want to boot from my USB whenever I want to play around with it. Thank You
Note: I'm running windows 8.1 currently on a ASUS N550JV laptop. I've been using the UUI from Pen Drive Linux.
Hello all.
I have been using Linux OS's of and on since 1996. I completely gave up on MS in 2006. I change out a hard drive in my PC and MS thought I should purchase a new site license, I did not agree with that train of thought.
I found that popping in a disk and getting Linux up and running was easy to the belief that "Nothing could be this easy". It really was. The learning curve was encountered when trying to make Linux Fly. I recommend that everyone new to Linux or anyone with a desire to do a bit more than e-mail, catalog some photos or music get your hands on a Linux command reference guide and learn the terminal. There is so much to understand and do With Free Open Source Software and there are so many ways to access, install and configure the available software. There are so many resources for help and trouble shooting all things Linux however, here's the caveat; I really had to learn how to ask the question to get an answer that worked for me. General question will get you general answers and rarely ever was the answer I sought found the hodgepodge of generalities found in forums or Google searches and the like. I learn to be very specific in my question and the answers were discerned with less difficulty. There are really answers or fixes for the questions I have had concerning Linux.
I am the webmaster of a site dedicated to the travel to the southwest of France. The site is hosted by Hostpapa (in Canada).
The site URL is: http://southweststory.com
The site is 3 yeas old and worked fine until 1 week ago when it became unaccessible to people who use the French company "Free" as an ISP. (the site is available via all other French or International ISP providers as far as I know).
I have contacted Free tech support but they are completely incompetent - I even got answers like "If we cannot see the site we cannot do anything for you" and they surely could not see it because it is THEIR company that blocks it etc.
Frankly I am at my wits end and not sure what to do next. Free is a popular company in France due to their cut prices so it is a pity to lose so many potential customers.
My question is: is there anything that Free could have changed (not sure what) that would prompt me to change any settings in the for example .htaccess file or anything like this? Any ideas would be very much appreciated. Thank you
