Ubuntu 14.04 Sudo Gparted: Command Not Found

I made the mistake of cloning over my cloning drive....reinstalled and updated to Ubuntu 14.04. I didn't setup the drive to begin with and I have no idea what's going on. After the reinstall and updates, I try to test the cloning instructions I was given and I get the line "sudo:gparted: command not find". Is there a step I missed in reinstallation or something I need to do to make this work?

Backing Up With Dd

hi guys,

i want to back up my centos server that has a few virtual machines on it...i read that some people were saying dd is a very good way to do this. but a lot of people dont cause of fear of the command line.

i would like to write a script that backus up the entire hard drive to a ext usb hard drive.

i have a couple of questions though.

1) am i better off using a cloning software like acronis or storage craft.

2) can dd also restore a system to a bootable state or is it really just a backup.

3) can you still use the system while it is backing up?

thanks...

Help With Live USB And Exfat Issue

Sorry, but I just have a terrible time getting started in Linux. What I want for the moment (having set up a partition on WinXP and ran a distro before) is a live MINT USB distro on a 64GB stick plugged into a Win7 machine. Since stick is 64GB, I am dealing with exfat. Found Gparted and seems to be okay, but gives an ominous warning about launching the win 32 formatter off of the stick drive and NOT windows (C:\). That part is understood. However I see the prompt "hit any key to format L" and when I look up at the colored title bar of the window, I read cmd: C:\ etc. that makes me wonder am in C: or L: (the USB drive letter). The Gparted iso in resident in L: but the drive needs C: for computing power etc. I know, I'm such a newbie it must be painful for many to read. I just don't want to screw up the MBR of C: In short. Unetbootin, MINT 17 and Gparted are all on L: and unzipped on a exfat USB thumbdrive. I want to fix the exfat to be readable by Unetbootin so I can make a live USB. I might be doing it correctly, but the top bar of the widow reading cmd: c:\etc etc scares me.

I Try To Install Ns2.33 On Ubuntu 10.10 In Order To Run ZRP Protocol

Hello every one
please I need your help to fix my problem to install ns2.33allinone on the ubuntu 10.10 in order to run ZRP protocol for security purpose.
before this time I install every thing correctly as follow
The steps I follow to run the ZRP on the Ubuntu 10.10 and Ns2-allinone-2.33
------------------------------------------------------------------
1. first install the Ubuntu 10.10 on VMwear and download the ns2.33 and exract it in the home directory

2.Ubuntu 10.10 - 32´ is old. you have to replace the text in /etc/apt/sources.list , to be able to install packages.
So you write
$ gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
After the file open remove all the text and past the following text instead it.
#
deb http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ maverick main restricted
deb http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ maverick multiverse universe
deb http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ maverick-updates main restricted
deb http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ maverick-updates multiverse universe
deb http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ maverick-backports main restricted
deb http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ maverick-backports multiverse universe
deb http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ maverick-security main restricted
deb http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ maverick-security multiverse universe
#

Then save the file and close.

3.Write the following command to update the system
$ sudo apt-get update

4.download the two files from the following link and save it in the home directory

gcc41-compat , `gcc41-compat-4.1.2_i386.deb' :
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B7S...it?usp=sharing
g++41-compat , `g++41-compat-4.1.2_i386.deb' :
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B7S...it?usp=sharing

5.write the following command to install
$ sudo dpkg -i g++41-compat-4.1.2_i386.deb gcc41-compat-4.1.2_i386.deb

6.write the following command to update the packages
$sudo apt-get install libx11-dev libxmu-dev libxmu-headers libxt-dev libtool make automake autoconf g++

7. Download the ZRP from the following link and put it in the ns-allinone-2.33 directory
The latest "patch package" is zrp-ns233-patching.tar.gz
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B7S...it?usp=sharing

8. After that you should follow the next steps
$ cd ns-allinone-2.33/
$ tar xvf zrp-ns233-patching.tar.gz
$ export CC=gcc41 CXX=g++41
$ ./install
$ cd ns-2.33/
$ sudo make install

9. Then you can download the example of the ZRP from the following link and run
ZRP examples : zrp-examples-2012.tar.bz2
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B7S...it?usp=sharing

but now when i try to install it again i got this error
after i run "./install" command

Flash Drive Read-only Half Solved

Lots of posts on internet about flash drives ending up read-only in Linux after using on a windows or mac systme. Gather it is a problem with incorrectly ejecting or the ejection being poorly done.

Usually I can go back to the box and re-eject and all is well. This time even GParted and the resident fedora 21 Disk Utility programs did not even see the drive (which Was visible under "files").

Using disk utility on the "offending" machine, it seems there were many files that were truncated (due to some eject issue? Note the ejection was done "according to Hoyle" ); regardless the flash drive was still read-only. Howeverk, re-trying GParted, which now recognized the drive, the drive was unmounted checked. Some repair was necessary. Currently, I can read, write and copy within the drive.

However, the drive itself is still only read-only for all but the owner (which is not even root). I cannot copy any file to the flash drive. Chmod does nothing (no matter if root or other user tries). I suppose I should be satisfied for the access there is, but if anyone has any more suggestions, it would be great.

Thanks in advance for any info/interest

Ubuntu Directories

Hi there. I have Ubuntu 14.04 installed. Actually I have been doing a lot of work in this OS for about a year. The thing I cannot still comprehend is how to find files I installed. In this particular case I need glut.h for g++ compiler. So I go here, do this command;

Code:
sudo apt-get install freeglut3-dev

And find out that I already have the newest version (which I have suspected since I recall installing it).

So, the next step is to find the glut.h file and reference it with #include command. I cannot find it anywhere. This website says it has to be he

Code:
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libglut*

Why's the asterisk? Is it a footnote or part of the code?

I don't seem to have /usr/ directory. I cannot find it anywhere.

How does Ubuntu directory work?

Thanks, - A.

I Am Trying To Create A Fedora Live USB Using Ubuntu 14.04 But It's Not So Easy

Unetbootin does not do it and nor does startup disk creator. I the forums are described other ways but too complicated for me. I did find this, with simple instructions

https://ifireball.wordpress.com/2011...tor-on-ubuntu/

sudo aptitude install python-parted isomd5sum python-pyisomd5sum python-urlgrabber extlinux python-qt4 python-qt4-dbus tar

That command should install these packages but all I get is sudo: aptitude: command not found.

isomd5sum
python-parted
python-pyisomd5sum
python-urlgrabber
extlinux
python-qt4
python-qt4-dbus
tar

Does anybody know a simple way to make a Fedora live USB using ubuntu. I was planing to try their Fedora Workstation 22

Clone A Bootable CF Card With Multiple Partitions And Copy To Bigger Drive

Hi, all, I am new to the forum and quite new to Linux, I am running Mint and Kali from a USB drive, all is going well with with the software and I am starting to find my way around it.

So, now to my question, I have 15 machines which all run from a CF card and the card has multiple partitions and is a Windows Embedded XP, not that the operating system makes any difference, I need to upgrade all the CF cards from 2gb to 4gb, so unfortunately Windows isn't an option to use to copy the drives as it doesn't recognise multiple partitions on a removable drive, so I cant just remove the drive, clone it and fit the new one.

What I need is a method of cloning the drive completely with both partitions, I have read about dd but cant seem to see anything about doing this with multiple partitions, as Linux sees it as two drives when I plug it in, how can I use dd or anything else to clone the drive which is bootable and has two partitions?

At some point I would like to automate the process as I could have many of these machines/drives to upgrade, is there a way to write a program that will automatically back up the drives from a USB drive and then reinstall it, I have seen this done before but I am not sure if this method did the whole drive, just the main drive or all partitions?

Dual-Booting: Grub Rescue Mode Woes - Help Please :)

Hello!

TL;DR: Deleted Linux partition from Windows. Stuck at Grub rescue prompt.

I'm sorry to trouble you guys, because I'm an idiot.

So I'm wanting to dual-boot Kalilinux and Windows 8.
I went through the steps such as creating a bootable USB, changing the
boot order and so on. I get into Kali, start Gparted and try to partition stuff.

I'm far from an expert, so I wasn't sure what to do. Long-story short, I
didn't seem to get Kali installed correctly, due to something with an EFI
drive being required. So I boot into windows and then stupidly, because it said in the guide,try to "uninstall" Kali by removing it's partition, inside Win8 haha... So I did.

Now I simply get the Grub rescue command prompt when I boot from the same
USB and I have no idea how to fix it. I've run bootrec.exe/fixmbr in Windows haha,
for what it's worth. However Grub can't find any partition it says.

In windows, I have like... 2-3 Recovery partitions. Does anyone know how to remove
them??? I've tried to clear as much as I can, besides the C drive and Auxillary D drive.

Any advice would be very appreciated.
