So I'm brand spanking new at this. I'm trying to teach myself about Linux and RPM-based distributions specifically because it's a requirement for a job that I really, really want (very tired of being a barista). Beyond that as someone who primarily uses my computer for gaming, I'm quite satisfied with using Windows 7.
I'm currently attempting, and so far failing, to install OpenMandriva on a completely blank 1TB external HDD. I've finally gotten the install to boot from the DVD disk properly, but now I'm running into this error:
"Partitioning failed: FAT resizing failed: ntfs resize failed: ntfsresize v2014.2.15 (libntfs-3g)
Error: device '/dec/sdd1' is mounted. You must 'unmount' it first."
What I've tried so far is this what this site has provided: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/w...#1TC=windows-7
Unfortunately, the same error pops up regardless. What am I missing? Also, pretend that you're trying to explain this to your grandpa. I probably won't understand what you're trying to tell me otherwise. Please help! I'm near the end of my rope over here.
Hello,
I am having issues connecting to my linux box (opensuse 11.3) from my Window 7 sytem. I am using FileZilla. When I attempt to connect I get this error message
Status: Connecting to 192.168.198.205...
Response: fzSftp started
Command: open "Mike@192.168.198.205" 22
Command: Trust new Hostkey: Once
Command: Pass: *********
Error: Authentication failed.
Error: Critical error
Error: Could not connect to server
I am thinking it is a setup on issue on my Linux box but not sure what to change at this point. I must have some settings correct, because I am able to remote into my Linux box using FreeNX. Any help would be appreciated

Could anyone help me???
I have a USB fax modem, and it logs the following errors when turned on.
I know it is impossible to know for sure, but think it is hardware related? Any chance to salvage?
Also, what are the steps to start troubleshooting?
Thanks

Hello everyone,
I just tried upgrading to Linux Mint 17 from version 16, and I obviously did something wrong since when I'm prompted for my password, I get an error message saying "failed to load session cinnamon."
Then there are some error logs which say failed to connect to virtual box kernel service for several lines, then below that "unable to find cinnamon-fullback-mount-helper."
I tried doing ctrl alt f2, but I get a whole bunch of gobbledy gook which I'm unable to copy and paste.
I also tried burning a new DVD-R with Mint 17, but my computer doesn't even read it when I power it on. Otherwise, I would have tried reinstalling the OS.
So any suggestions you have will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Any ideas what it is?
When I type
service apache2 start
I get a message saying:

The apache error log is blank and doesn't have any information.
Please help me.
Using a Kingston 4GB datatraveler for drive creation
Created using amd64 1.1.0a of the Kali ISO verified from Kali.org
Drive created using Ubuntu 14.04 on a Dell Latitude E5500
dd seems to create the drive with no errors. The drive boots to the error. Hard reboot into Ubuntu to search for solution has led me to a long series of issues that I have been trying to correct.
A possible fix for the failed to load error is to copy the file to the root of the USB drive (/dev/sdb1). Drive is created with a hidden HPFS/ NTFS fs. 0x17. Changed FS to HPFS/NTS (0x07). Drive now mounts, but when attempting to copy onto drive, I get an error that the file system is read only.
I try to correct the issue using nautilus and the properties menu. It does not allow me to change the view only to read/write even though it shows me as the owner.
I think maybe a command line thing would work, or who knows what else. Maybe an fstab entry? I am continuing to search the web, and hope to work this out.
Any help would be appreciated.
Ubuntu 14.10 runs great on my laptop but I think I have dependency problems because EVERY time I install or remove software I get the following error message. However everything seems to run just fine...
"Package operation failed"
"The installation or removal of a software package failed."
...and details shows a massive list of gobbledygook with a lot of:
"insserv: Starting vpnagentd_init depends on rc.local and therefore on system facility `$all' which can not be true!"
I can post the whole message but I'll wait for feedback first.
