Hi. I am a noob to Red Hat but have previously used but am no expert with other linuxes such as Puppy and Ubuntu. Can anyone suggest a good music file player for Red Hat (or in general) ? I have many files that I have recorded from records and cassette tapes but Itunes/ Windows won't let me play them, saying that the ORIGINAL cannot be found, so I am switching back to Linux. Hello there! I'm completely new to linux; I've used ubuntu and other distributions but just at user level.
The problem is, I've got a Sony laptop with the inside H2O (3.9) BIOS, don't have the complete specs right now, but i can check them when i'm back at home. It has a NVIDIA 640M LE, 8gb ram, an Intel Core I7 processor, and a 750gb HD.
The screen, although working well enough, is broken, some plastic parts are broken also and it's not in good condition overall. It worked well in every aspect aside from those.
As i have a desktop, computer to work already, I don't need the laptop for working anymore, so I thought it could be a good idea to use it as an entertainment center in the living room, you know, for watching movies, playing some old-school games in local coop with and without emulators and so on.

I thought the still in beta SteamOS (Think it's a Debian-based distro) could be a nice option, so I've installed it. The installation process ran without issues till the first reboot; after that i only get "operating system not found" error and nothing else.
I unplugged the HD and made a complete installation from scrap with every reboot needed in my desktop computer and everything worked out fine: installing games, browsing the web, playing music, etc.
But, after plugging again the HD with the OS installed in the laptop I still get the same error; operating system not found.

Any ideas of how to solve it? Thank you in advance, and sorry about my english

I tried doing a search on this topic, but the only hit I got was my "Howdy" intro post from yesterday. So I thought I'd go ahead and toss out this question to the forum to see if there is a particular distribution I should be looking at.

Currently I have two PCs on my home network that share a monitor, mouse, and keyboard. One of them is my digital audio workstation (aka DAW), a computer that I use for music composition, production, and recording, and the other is the one I'm typing on at the moment, which until very recently has been just sitting around doing nothing -- through no fault of its own. It had a bad power supply which I just recently replaced. But now that I have it up and running again, I would like to use it for some experimentation. It has two drives installed, one of which is currently running Windows 7. The other has an older distribution of Ubuntu on it -- about three years old or so. Because it's such an old distribution, I'm thinking about replacing it with whatever will give me the best performance in terms of working with audio and MIDI.

I'm not very conversant at all with Linux. About all I did with this old Ubuntu distro was play around with it some. And then, when I installed Win7, it killed the Ubuntu boot sector, so it's been quite a while since I've even logged into the Linux side of things.

I don't suppose I even need to mention that I'll also be installing a boot manager so that I can go back and forth between the OSes. I've been playing around some with Grub2Win, but for some reason it doesn't find my Linux installation. I need to check into that a bit further.

SO getting back to the music production topic, is there even a significant difference in the way the various distributions would handle audio and MIDI?

I've done some googling on the subject of the best linux distributions and, what I've found is that "best" tends to vary a lot over a fairly narrow time period. Bodhi, Mint, Megeia, Ubuntu, Xubuntu, Lubunto (for laptops), OpenSUSE, etc., all of these and more make the "best of" list at one time or another over a relatively short period of time -- say three years or so in terms of a timeframe. I've got to admit that, just from a name perspective, I already have a bit of an attraction the Bodhi. Not only is its interface supposed to be beautiful, but apparently the Bodhi community are more visual-art-centric (in addition to being a musician and a whole lot of other things, I'm also a visual artist), plus my old Earthlink email address was bodhi at earthlint dot net. I closed my earthlink account some ten years ago or so, so it's naught but a fading memory. Someone else likely has it now. Anyway, I am for sure gonna give Bodhi a look-see. Right now, I'm reading through a "top seven for 2014" list put together by Carla Schroder over at linux.com.

I'm hoping I can reduce the size of this list some, not just to save time but also to save disks if I have to burn copies to disk to try them out.

So, if you happen to use Linux for making music, do you have a favorite? If so, I'd like to learn about it and why you like it.

I keep my Music on a USB flash drive. I do not have room on my laptop to store my mp3 library so this is not an option. Whenever, I remove the flash drive (or restart my computer, i think) my music player (rhythmbox currently) forgets where the music is stored. I have to go through reimporting my whole music library which is time consuming and tedious. I imagine that my music player can't find the files because the flash drive gets mapped to a different mount point or something after restarting or removing the drive.

TL;DR
How can I setup my laptop so that my music player can find my music library on a usb flash drive without needing to constantly re-import my library?

Also, I have the same question to syncing to cloud storage. How can I automatically sync flash storage to the cloud?

I'm just getting into Bash scripting, and would appreciate some help with this question. My music collection is split into a smaller, "active" set, kept on my laptop, and a much larger collection on an external hard drive. I've just converted some of the larger filetypes on my "active" set to *.mp3, and now want to move all the original files (*.flac) to the external hard drive. I need some help putting together a command or script that will recursively search my active music set for *.flac and then move them, but keeping the source directory structure. Some or all of these subdirectories may not exist on the destination.

eg. On the active music set, I may have:

/Music/artist1/album1/(a mix of *.mp3 and *.flac files)
/Music/artist2/album1/(a mix of *.mp3 and *.flac files)

and on the hard drive

/Music 2/artist1/album2/(the contents of the album)

So when copying, it'll need to create "/album1/" in "artist1" on the destination, and also "/artist2/album1/"

Hello everyone.
The sound isn't working on my debian live usb.
I've installed pavucontrol hoping that this would turn on the sound somehow. But it hasn't.

The program is showing RS880 HDMI audio [Radeon HD 4200] as my output device.
The play back bar moves when I play video on youtube but there is no sound.
On the configuration tab, I've tried all the options under 'built-in audio' - but none of these seem to work.

Not sure why there appears to be two sound cards...

On a Ubuntu site about a similar problem with the same sound card, they suggest creating /etc/asound.conf and adding code to it http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1647400
However, at this point, I'm a bit lost.
Can someone help please?

I try to install ubuntu 9 on woindows 7.The ubuntu is working quite fine.I try to see where my bin files are located.Its in folder FILE SYSTEM.
My commands ip addr,ls are working.

The command sudo cd/usr/bin is not working.

Please let me know where problem is.

I have recently upgrade my distribution, everything worked fine except for the sound system.

The audio stops working after a while. I lose the sound after several minutes of Skype use or while watching videos in my browser, it just happens....

But not only Skype or video audio stops, all sounds stop as well. I need to reboot the system to get the sound back, and then the same, at certain point all sounds disappear.

I tried many things that I found (reinstall alsa, kill and restart pulseaudio, install pavucontrol) but none of them seems to work.

This is the result of aplay -l

The weird thing is that the audio meter of the output sound from pavucontrol shows signal. The bar moves when receiving sound but no sound can be listened.

Typing pulseaudio with or without sound gives me:

E: [pulseaudio] pid.c: Daemon already running.
E: [pulseaudio] main.c: pa_pid_file_create() failed.

I though the second line was telling that something went wrong, but the sound works at the beginning even with that message.

I do not know what else to do. Any help would be more than welcome since I'm really frustrated.

Hi there folks, first post and been using Linux for roughly a week, not an expert but getting the feel for it.

So....my question is: I am in the process of building a studio-rig for music, and previoulsy I used Windows, and managed to get the x64 drivers for my audio card the Delta 1010LT and got it working etc. It came with the control panel as well.

I tried googling for the drivers for Ubuntu Studio (64), but to be honest, like I said being a newbie, I'm not entirely sure I have to download them? Most things I can just request download and install from the terminal in Ubuntu. Does this apply for these drivers or if not does anyone know the location of these drivers?
