CrossOver Or Wine (or Other Interface)

As a learning experience, I want to jump from Windows 7 to Linux full time on my laptop. This isn't because of some antiWindows bullshit or because its free or anything like that. I just want to learn the ins and outs of Linux like I pretty much know on Windows.

I plan to go with Ubuntu. LTS or latest stable version? Thoughts?

First off, compatibility. I do need that all my hardware on my laptop be compatible. From shortcut keys to wifi. This is not a brand new laptop so there shouldn't be any problems. Its a Dell Vostro 1510.

Next, software. Basically on this laptop software I use in and out: uTorrent, Teamviewer, WMP, mIRC, Skype, vSphere Client, Microsoft Office......That's pretty much it IMO. Also Facebook and YouTube (Flash) are a must. I will run all this software in WINE. I don't want (most) of the Linux ports. Im not looking to replace programs I like and use daily. Just looking to replace the operating system.

Next, virtualization. Due to some things (like Office) cannot be ran in Linux, I use a VM. VMWare with its unity feature pretty much gives me what I want.

Next, streaming. I need to be able to stream media from a WS2012R2 to this Linux installation. Special setup?

Anything that is blowing over me, please mention.

Suppose you must install new software (let's say Microsoft Office) on 100 computers. Must you go from computer to computer to install this new software or is there a faster (centralized?) way to do this?

Having read about the latest LibreOffice version, I felt tempted to try it out. I uninstalled the default version on my Ubuntu machine and downloaded the .deb from the LibreOffice site and installed it. The new office has since worked without any trouble.

A few days later I decided to dump Unity and go back to Gnome. So I installed Ubuntu-Gnome-Desktop.

It was then that I noticed two versions of LibreOffice on the application dash (I think, because there are two sets of icons for each office application- see the attached screenshot).

Did Gnome install its own version of LibreOffice with it? Does it really have one? I don't know.

Whichever icon I use to launch the app, the office however always brings up the latest version. So, there's no problem in terms of application errors. As I thought there's no need to have an extra version of an app and eat up my space, I tried to uninstall through Aptitude, but it doesn't 'remove' LibreOffice.

Okay. I got a newer computer to replace one of my two computers. A friend helped me install Xubuntu 14.10. So now I'm trying to get all the software I had on the old one.

In my writing, I write on a laptop. So I have LO 4.2.3.3 on it. So I put 4.2.3.3 on the other two computers, figuring it would be best to have the same versions on all three machines.

Now I have the folder for LO 4.2.3.3 (see screenshot) but don't know how to install it on the newer computer. I have GDebi Package Installer but that only wants to install files. (Unless I open the Debs folder and do 'select all files" and "open" them with the GDebi installer.)

I went to the LO site and they don't offer 4.2.3.3 any more.

Any ideas?

I get kernel panics and computer shut down when trying to install and run Linux Mint 17 Mate and Linux Mint 17.1 on an older HP laptop. The laptop is a Pavilion dv 5140 with 2.0GHz AMD Turion chip, 2.0 Gigs ram and 120GB hard drive. Linux is the only software installed on the computer. Yet, I think my problem is probably related to the hardware? Does anyone have any suggestions or experience with this situation? Thank you.

I recently switched from windows to linux, but am still having some problems adapting. What bothers me the most is that I cant use my headset properly. When I plug it in without having installed the driver software necessary to run the surround sound, it only sends part of my sound to my headset, the rest gets played by my laptop's speakers. I have tried installing the driver software while working with wine windows program loader, but each time I get the 'sorry, this software is not compatible with your OS'. Does anyone have an idea how I could solve this so I can use my headset properly again? I am running the xUbuntu version.

Hey guys, im a long time Mac user but I want to have a Linux computer in my office for web based stuff and fixing hard drives.... I'm going to buy a used computer from eBay to install my Linux software as I believe that Linux is a lot faster than Mac or windows and doesnt need the latest hardware to compete.

In order to be at least as fast as a windows computer but no more than $100. What range of computer should I be looking at? What specs should I look for? And once I get it should I run Ubuntu or mint for web based things and hard drive repair? As you no doubt know, the Linux lingo is a bit difficult sometimes so please bear with me. I'm doing the best I can.

I'm a new Linux user (Mint 17.1 Rebecca Mate) going through the learning curve. It's a challenege. Dual boot with Windows 8.1, which provides the motivation!

I have an older Dell Dimension PC with XP. It's old and cranky, but I do love my XP. I want to wipe the hard drive and install a user friendly simple version of Linux that I can reinstall XP into as VM.
I am clueless where to even begin to figure out which version of Linux is best for this aside from the two mentioned below. The PC operatest 2.17 GHz, has 1.25 GB RAM, and a 156 GB Hard Drive.

I tried installing Zorin, both by DVD and USB, but could not get it to install or even work live. Just kept getting the F1 to retry boot, F2 for setup ingfinte loop. Spent a week trying every which way, short of a format, to install Zorin but I just refused to work, despite their excellent suopport.

Also tried every which way to install Robolinux ( all three versions), and again could not get it to install, although I was able to do the Xfce and KLDE versions live. Just went to them for support and it requires a $5 donation per case. Knowing how much supoport I could need, that could really add up.

Any advise is greatly appreciated.

Hi. Sorry to be so stupid, but I just managed to load and install this Linux (which I really like a lot) on my previously windows <--(bad) system.
But now I need to upgrade some software (like Adobe flash), and I have no clue how to do this. I understand I should go to my original linux distrubutor, and select software thru them (my "Linux distro").
But actually, it's been awhile since I did the install, and I dont exactly remember where I even got this distribution. (I know, I'm dumb--sorry).
Is there a way I can look at my linux system files and see who my distribution is thru, and where is their website. Or would it be easier if I just went thru the whole download and install of linux again <--(not really looking forward to that).
Or even, am I wrong about going thru the distro to do installs/upgrades?
Anything you can tell me will be greatly appreciated.

I work in a company where job security isnt too great at the moment, so I'd like to learn new things, the main one being Linux.

Talking to a tech guy at work he says the best bet to replicate an office environment would be Red Hat, so I would like to install Red Hat Linux Enterprise V7 but am finding it difficult to find an open source website offering a free download for it.
Does anyone have a particular website they get their Linux from at all please?

Also, excuse this very ignorant question, but I'd like to set up a server within my Vmware Workstation 10 environment, plus 3 desktops - would that need Linux Red Hat server plus Linus Red Hat desktop software?

If the above has already been answered then I will happily follow a thread that you could point me too please instead?
