Ok I'm really new at this . Not the old DOS I'm used to. I'm trying to setup my home server using Ubuntu 12.0.4, I've had no success. I have an actual raid sever I'm using. Loaded first HD with Ubuntu 12.0.4, now trying to setup so I can access from anywhere. Remember I'm a newbie so try and keep it simple until I learn Linux. I have my router setup for port forward using 192.168.100 port 21. everything I looked at so far is pretty complicated for a new user. Any help would be great.
Im looking for a distro for a web server (Apache).
Ive always used Ubuntu but I didnt think it was the best for the job so I looked around and found CentOS.
CentOS is great, really simple to use but I wanted the latest and greatest.
Im getting replies that CentOS is about stable and I cant put the latest so I see now that distro is not for me.
Im looking for a distro that is simple to setup to run a small website off of (no big traffic, if any) and with the latest possible to be installed. It will probably be Wordpress. What distros do you guys recommend that I can run cutting edge web server technology (talking Apache 2.4.12, MySQL 5.6.24, PHP 5.6.8, etc.) and upgrade as soon as a new version comes out.
Hi All,
Please can someone assist me on this, I enabled Selinux on Ubuntu 14.04 server and it's disabling ssh remote login for all users including root.
From the ssh terminal I get the following error:
ssh root@192.168.x.x
Last login: Wed Mar 25 12:39:02 2015 from 192.168.x.x
/bin/bash: Permission denied
Connection to 192.168.211.135 closed.
tail /var/log/auth.log
ubuntu sshd[1640]: Accepted password for root from 192.168.x.x port 51082 ssh2
ubuntu sshd[1642]: Accepted password for root from 192.168.x.x port 51089 ssh2
ubunt sshd[1640]: Received disconnect from 192.168.x.x: disconnected by user
audit2allow --all
sshd_t
This avc is a constraint violation. you would need to modify the attribute of either the source or target types to allow this access.
possible cause is the source user (system_u) and target user (unconfined_u) are different.
possible cause is the source role (system_r) and target role (unconfined_r) are different.
possible cause is the source level (s0) and target level (s0-s0:c0.c255) are different.
allow sshd_t unconfined_trocess transition.
Please how can I make this changes to take effect.
Thanks in advance.
Hello!
I'm pretty new to the world of Linux. Right now I use Ubuntu Desktop 14.04 Later down the road I plan to install LAMP to try to run a web server.
Generally speaking, I prefer GUI (as most people, I guess), though I have no problem with CLI (remember myself in 1990 with MS-DOS).
As a regular user I don't think I really need a firewall in Ubuntu. Sticking to installation defaults is fine by me. But as an admin of a web server, I would think that I'm gonna need something beyond the Desktop ed. defaults security-wise. I'm aware of IPtables, of course. But to me it seems a little bit too much to learn, too steep of a learning curve right now. Then there's ufw.
And a GUI front-end of it, which is Gufw. Here opinions vary. Some say, I must learn IPtables, others think that Gufw does its job fine.
So what I'm asking here is not just an OPINION, but also a reasoning behind it. Real life example maybe etc.
Thank you.
Hey Everyone,
I'm pretty new to linux, I'm a long time mac user, and have been using a Mac Mini as my Plex and wordpress server for some time. Looking at Apples latest generation of Mac Minis, it looks like they no longer are a great option for servers. So here's my setup and wants in a nut shell.
Currently my Mac Mini hosts 3 wordpress sites and is my Plex server. The machine is running OS 10.10.2 Yosemite with Server running, and has 2 Drobo Gen 2 devices attached via Firewire 800.
I use 1 Drobo for my Plex Media, and the other drobo is used for machine backup.
Reading online, Looks like the Drobo 1 and 2 Genereations only show up as 2TB max segments on Linux So I would scrap the Drobo cases and put all the drives internal into the linux server tower.
I want to build a new Linux server that can take over these tasks. So my wants would be, A linux server that can host more than 1 wordpress site, run plex, and would have a RAID setup similar to Drobo, where I can add more drives or replace smaller/failed drives easily enough (doesn't have to be automatic rebuild like the drobo, as long as its possible and not to tricky to do)
what Linux Server OS and other options should I be looking at?
thanks everyone in advance!!

I have refer too many document for that but I am unable to access share with ldap user's username and password. I have referred below link

How to troubleshoot for user authentication on samba share?
Hey All,
Is there a way to present a path or other block device to a USB port on a Linux server then have that port connected to a USB port of another device (ie USB to USB) and have it look like a flash disk?
I can plug a USB flash disk to a router just fine. But if I wanted a device to access a path off of another device int he absence of NFS or CIFS capability, that would be handy.
In other words, anyway to assign storage to a USB port in Linux? It would be akin to something like SAN with a target and source just with USB.
Cheers,
DH
Hi,
So, I am learning meteor.js and signed up for a (cheap, i.e no support) VPS to host my Meteor app. Everything is running fine but I am trying to understand better how Linux works so here is my question:
I am running CentOS 7 on the VPS but it still uses iptables for its firewall.
I had to enable port 80 to access the web server. However, if I reboot the server, it stops working until I do
Code:
iptables -F
Then everything works. But I am thinking that -F might not be the best thing. I have changed the default SSH port from 22 to something else and that also works but I don't think I ever added it to the iptables rules.
If I do a port scan, the new SSH port is indicated as open as well as port 80 but others are closed as they are supposed to be.
Any idea what is doing on behind the scenes that requires iptables -F for the web access to work properly and if I shouldn't be doing iptables -F (I have it in the rc.local file), what is the right way of doing it?
(BTW, I am computer literate but not that familiar with Linux, which I am trying to learn now.)

I have several computers connected to a D-Link DIR605L router, two with ethernet cables and two through wifi. The Windows XP computer can see itself and nobody else. The Ubuntu (trusty) desktop and Ubuntu (lucid) netbook computers see nobody (unable to retrieve file list from server) and the Windows Vista computer only sees itself. Clearly, I have failed to configure something or a set of somethings.
Do I have to have one of the computers always on, acting as some kind of file server or can the router do this job? This is a new router. My old one (whose power supply went phut) connected everybody without arguing about it and we could share files around, even with a mix of OSs.
Since this is a local network only, I have no firewalls enabled, as far as I know ...
All of the network set-up posts I've found rabbit on about how to get your internet connection working through your router, which is not an option for me. I have dial-up working on the XP computer and a mobile wireless USB dongle for internet access on the trusty desktop.
I've installed samba and a few other packages, but so far, none of them have solved my problem. Can someone please tell me where to start and which tutorials to read? If I have to set up a computer as a file server, I guess it will have to be the XP thing, as it's the only one that is always running, but I'd like to avoid that, if possible, as I speak XP worse than I speak Ubuntu.
BTW, D-Link are no help at all, two hours on the 'phone and they were still trying to get me to connect to an ADSL service I don't have ...
I am new to Linux and am trying to Install Ubuntu Server. The software loaded without a hitch but when I try to install, it stops at the following:
'Random: nonblocking pool is initalized' I don't know what this means or how to correct whatever is wrong. Any assistance would be very greatfully received. Thanks
