Hello all,
Is there any 'key' to save and continue editing in vim, just like there is :wq to save and quit (also ZZ )? Right now I use :w and i keys to save and continue. I keep saving file every other minute and wondering is there any short-cut for that. Not that :w + i are too many key-presses, just for curiosity i want to know.
Thanks
Hello - I admit to being new to Linux. I'm not sure if this problem should be re-routed to a more advanced level, though.
I downloaded Oracle Linux ver. 7 on my server with Server settings (and a Gnome GUI). After running through the terminal basics, I tried opening gedit to test out its capabilities. It wouldn't let me save to folder; it just grayed out and I had to quit the application.
I modified gedit to -rwxrwxrwx (chmod) and took ownership of the file (chown) under my user profile and group. When that didn't work, I re-logged in as root and modified gedit back to root ownership and group, and it still won't save changes to any file location.
One more thing: gksudo didn't work, either...
Any suggestions?

Firefox26 is the default browser.. but it is out of date and not supported by my Google Mail.. It also will not auto update.. and I keep getting warnings about Adobe Flash version being unsafe..
I have a lot of Bookmarks which I would like to save.. before doing anything radical.
Downloading the latest Firefox 34 for Linux from Mozilla [firefox-34.0.5(1).tar.bz2] does not help it only unpacks all the files but does not begin to install anything. Trying to execute [run-mozilla.sh] the only script file.. opens it in an editor?
How to save my bookmarks and update my browser..?
I have been trying to run linux on a fujitsu Lifebook t series, and have two questions. One may solve the other. First, the system settings option in the top right drop down menu does not respond. When I click it nothing happens. Second I can't seem to find the right combination of keys for "Magic Key". This Fujitsu tablet has a Insert/PrtSc key and a Delete/SysRq key. When I try the key combinations outlined in what I have read, I get a Save screen shot dialog box. This keyboard requires a Fn key to be depressed for the second half (first half/second half) of the two keys I mentioned. I have tried :
the Alt + Insert/PrtSc,
Alt + Delete/SysRq,
Alt + Fn + Insert/PrtSc,
Alt + Fn + Delete/SysRq,
All of those combinations trigger the "Save screen shot dialog".
Thanks for any insight!

So I created this big script and want to ask for username and set a variable, however if the username exist in the username variable then continue with script otherwise ask the user to enter his name.
Flow:
-- start script "Enter User Name"
-- ask user to input username
-- if username is blank or different value then put that username in $USERNAME variable
-- then continue with the rest of the script
-- next time this user runs the script it will have his name loaded so he just presses enter to continue with the script.
-- If it is NOT the same user then, new user can erase existing input and enter a new name.
Hope it makes sense...
Thanks in advance for the help.
I have a script which reads a controller ID and continues. I am trying to add some checks for user input "ctrl".
Valid responses would be whole number 1 thur 5. If value is between 1-5 (single numeric value) then continue with the rest of the script. If any other value then Exit script or continue to ask user input until valid.
I tried a couple of while loops do with esac, but can not seem to get a handle
Code:
read -p "Controller ID#: " ctrl
Any help would be greatly appreciated

Hi There
I am a newbie, of course, running Mate on Mint 17.1 Rebecca.
I seem to be having all sorts of glitches with this installation so will try and sort them one at a time.
All had been fine with Petra and Quina ( I know - so why update you ask?) but wanted the up to date version for the lasting support.
I updated through Mint 17 Quina rather than doing a new install.
The most important glitch to solve first is at the start and logon.
For some reason my password is not being saved and keeps showing as Error.
I then have to reboot and go into Setup and retype Password in both the Administrator and User boxes before clicking F10 to Save and Exit.
Am still trying to understand how to use the Terminal correctly but any help would be appreciated.
