PXE Booting System Rescue CD 3.8.0

Hi,

Just downloaded the "systemrescuecd-x86-4.5.2". I then mounted it, created a bootable USB stick. I then copied the source to it. I also copied the source to my PXE server. However, all though the program works brilliantly when booting it from USB, I cannot get it to load completely via the PXE method - basically via PXE boot, I do not see the selection menu.

I hope somebody with more experience can shed some light on this matter, as Linux is not one of my strong points.

The following is my PXE servers config:
LABEL rescue32_3
MENU LABEL ^System Rescue CD 32 bit
KERNEL sysresccd/isolinux/rescue32
APPEND initrd=/sysresccd/isolinux/initram.igz,/sysresccd/sysrcd.dat

Using the above config, PXE Linux appears to find and load the following on the client:
Loading sysresccd/isolinux/rescue32... ok
Loading sysresccd/isolinux/initram.igz... ok
Loading sysresccd/sysrcd.dat... ok

The first sign of the issue during PXE boot is when the program starts to load from RAM on the client:
Reading all physical volumes. This may take a while...
Searching for /sysrcd.dat on devices...
Attempting to mount device: /dev/sda...

Various other attempts to mount volumes and then:
!Cannot find device with /sysrcd.dat. Retrying...

This issue then propagates for other volumes and then displays:
!Cannot find device with /sysrcd.dat on devices.
Running a mini shell (cannot complete the boot process)
bin/sh: can't access tty: job control turned off

Any help would be very much appreciated, as it would be a shame not to be able to use this fantastic resource via PXE.

Kind regards,
proliant800

Triple Boot Problem: Unable To Add 3rd System With Bootable USB

Hi All,

I recently decided to tryout Linux and dual booted my laptop (originally just had windows 8) with Xubuntu. Now I want to try out Kali Linux. So I downloaded Kali and made a bootable USB, the problem is that when I try to boot from the USB it just brings up the grub menu asking me to select Xubuntu, Windows etc. I've changed the boot menu in the BIOS but that has no effect.

I've tried booting into windows and the restarting by holding shift but when I select the usb option it just says:

"system doesn't have any USB boot option. Please select other boot option in Boot Manager Menu"

and then returns to the grub menu. I don't understand because I used a bootable usb to install xubunto?

I'd be really grateful if anyone can help me out with this!

Thanks

Recovering After Windows 7 Install: Rescue Cannot Mount Root

I have a dual boot laptop with debian stable & Windows 7.

The HD partitions a
sda1: NTFS for W7
sda2: FAT32 (currently unused)
sda3: linux /boot
sda4: linux ext4, which is LVM with encryption

I've re-installed W7 and now need to recover the MBR & grub menu.

I've booted with the netinst usb in rescue mode, but it fails to mount the root partition /sda4:
"An error occured while mounting the device you entered for your root file system (/dev/sda4) on /target"

and /var/syslog shows:
Code:
rescue-mode: selected root device '/dev/sda4'
umount: cant umount /target: Invalid argument
isofs_fill_super: bread failed, dev=sda4, iso_blknum=16, block=32
EXT2-fs (sda4): error: unable to readsuperblock
EXT3-fs (sda4): error: unable to readsuperblock
rescue: mount: mounting /dev/sda4 on /target failed: Invalid argument

So it seems like something is wrong with the mount command?

Would appreciate suggestions how to solve this.

Thanks

Booting To Linux On A Win8 UEFI PC

Booting to CentOS Linux problem. I have an HP desktop PC with an AMD CPU and win8.1 installed on it with UEFI as the boot process. The CentOS7 DVD indicates that I have installed the CentOS successfully. When I boot the PC it does take me to a menu offering CentOS and Win8. Win 8 will boot correctly. However, when I try to boot to CentOS I get a screen that says “Kernel not found”. The boot loading process continues until it ultimately brings up a terminal login screen. When I try to login with my password and usr name it tells me that they are wrong. I suspect the Kernel not found is the real problem but I can't get into the CentOS program to see if GRUB or any of the other programs are missing or defective. So far I have not disabled the UEFI since I didn't think I needed to. Any suggestions?

How To Start Legacy-OS-2 From USB? Which Boot Codes In Syslinux?

Hello,

I loaded the legacy OS 2 files from the ISO (vmlinuz, initrd.gz and pup_214.sfs) into a CF card (on an IDE adapter in my old PC). This CF card can be mounted on an USB adapter later for booting diverse PCs.

It boots..
and stop later with an error.
... looking for Puppy in .. (diverse devices) DONE
... looking for pup_save.2fs in .. (diverse devices) DONE
... (STOP TO PROMPT) cannot find Puppy in idehd.

Question: what is the reason of stop? should I perhaps use a specific boot code?

my syslinux.cfg has
label puppy
kernel vmlinuz
append initrd=initrd.gz PMEDIA=usbflash

"Invalid Magic Number" When Loading Initrd Into GRUB Prompt Bootloader

Hi, I'm pretty new to Linux.

I'm currently working on a project in my Linux Administration class, but have run into a bit of a bump.

I'm tasked with booting Linux (currently using CentOS 7) through the GRUB prompt. I've loaded the kernel, but I'm having an issue with the initrd.

I've tried both of these commands:
"linux /boot/initrd-plymouth.img"
"linux /boot/initramfs-3.10.0-123.el7.x86_64.img"

Neither of these commands have worked. It only returns the message "invalid magic number" for both of the commands. Any ideas on how I can fix this?

Thanks for any help in advance. It should help me understand Linux better!

Linux Fails To Boot After Refind Install

Hello all,
I'm having an issue booting my linux installation after installing refind. I googled the issue but nothing seems relevant to fixing it.
Refind starts up fine and I can see linux (vmlinuz...) but when I select it to boot it says

Failed to open file: install\initrd.gz
Trying to load files to higher address
Failed to open file: install\initrd.gz

It is a dual boot system with Win8. It is an encrypted installation if that makes any difference. Both systems are efi.
How might i go about fixing this? Any pointers and/or relevant threads appreciated

Grub-mkconfig Menu Changes

I want to change the menu on a Suse 12 Enterprise system.
I edit the /etc/default zip12grub.conf file execure grug2-mkconfig. Then reboot the system and no changes occur. The zip12grub.conf seems like the correct file to update so I am at a loss as to what the correct process would be.

Asus Eee PC Netbook - Booting From A USB Stick

Hi all. I'm trying to set up a netbook with Ubuntu for my computer-challenged Mother. I downloaded the image file to the download section of the new netbook, created a USB stick to boot from and then restarted the computer, pressing F2 in order to change the boot order. Using the "+" key I was able to put [Removable Dev.] on top: "1st Boot Device", but, and here's the thing, it is disabled: "A devince enclosed in the parenthesis has been disab led in the corresponding type menu." I do not understand this, nor do I know what to do. Help please....
