Audio Output Source Changes

Not sure if I should be posting this here or the arch board (I dont think there is a manjaro board but arch is close enough) but I'm still learning the in and outs of all this and this board has been really helpful with ambiguous problems.

The Laptop:
Hardwa Lenovo Thinkpad W530
OS: Manjaro 0.8.12 Ascella
Kernel: x86_64 Linux 3.19.3-1-MANJARO
Shell: bash 4.3.33
Resolution: 1600x900
DE: XFCE4
WM: Xfwm4
WM Theme: Menda
GTK Theme: Xfce-dusk [GTK2], Not Found [GTK3]
Icon Theme: Menda-Square
Font: Cantarell 11
CPU: Intel Core i7-3630QM CPU @ 3.4GHz
GPU: Quadro K1000M
RAM: 1112MB / 15871MB

Problem: Audio will randomly stop, only after waking up or logging in. It never happens during playback. It seems once I get it working again it doesn't happen.

Oddly enough, I cannot recreate the problem it's pretty inconsistent but its happening fairly regularly

What happened when it started: I was trying to connect headphones by bluetooth. Beats headphones (if this is relevent). It connected right up, but it took a little bit of troubleshooting before I realized I had to manually switch the output source to be the headphones. The problem started shortly after this so I am guessing this is what started it.

Troubleshooting: Here is what I am noticing, simply plugging an audio cable in and then out resets playback to the speakers. I took at look at the 'audio mixer' and saw this, whe nthe headphones are plugged in, speakers switch to "muted", masters level drops slightly, and 'mic boost' turns up a bit. Unplugging them unmutes the speakers, puts master back to maximum, and turns mic boost down.

I haven't seen the audio mixer while the problem is still happening because It's become a kneejerk reaction to just quickly stick the headphones jack in to fix it.

I've seen this thread:
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...put%27-798325/
and this following article:
http://ubuntugeek.com/forum/index.php?topic=21.0

These seem more applicable to ubuntu and the problem itself seems different.

Any thoughts?

No Sound After New Install Ubuntu 14.04

I just installed Ubuntu 14.04 on my Aspire E11 laptop. Everything works except sound. Nothing is muted. Alsamixer is in strange condition with no bars. Normally I find fixes by googling a question then finding then pasting commands into the terminal but all to no avail. I still have no sound. Any feedback would be appreciated.

Pulse audio controls show everything as normal with nothing muted.

No Sound On Debian Live Usb Using Pavucontrol And ATI RS880 [Radeon HD 4200] Audio

Hello everyone.
The sound isn't working on my debian live usb.
I've installed pavucontrol hoping that this would turn on the sound somehow. But it hasn't.

The program is showing RS880 HDMI audio [Radeon HD 4200] as my output device.
The play back bar moves when I play video on youtube but there is no sound.
On the configuration tab, I've tried all the options under 'built-in audio' - but none of these seem to work.

Not sure why there appears to be two sound cards...

On a Ubuntu site about a similar problem with the same sound card, they suggest creating /etc/asound.conf and adding code to it http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1647400
However, at this point, I'm a bit lost.
Can someone help please?

No Sound ALSA On Ubuntu 12.04

Hi I a running Ubunto 12.04 on a HP PC with an onboard intel analaog sound card

(ALC662) and a HDMI connection into my TV.
I use this PC for Mythtv and Kodi using the sound over HDMI which works a treat in MythTV however I cannot get the sound to work on Kodi, Firefox or any other app which I presume is down to misconfigured ALSA setup, I had this working previously but it stopped and I am not sure why, possible updates.

Sourround Sound Not Working On Linux Mint 17.1

Hello

I have linux mint 17.1 cinnamon installed on my computer, but the surround sound is not working (I only get stereo from two speakers)

When I run lspci I can see that my card is called

C-Media Electronics Inc CMI8738/CMI8768 PCI Audio (rev 10)

there is another embeded card that came with my computer called

[AMD/ATI] Trinity HDMI Audio Controller

but I have my speakers hooked up to the first one and I have selected this card in the "output device" option on the lower right hand side of the screen, and I have selected the sound setting "analgog 4.0 surround".

My surround sound used to work when I had windows xp and xubuntu installed on an older computer with the same surround sound card attached. So I can't understand why it is not working now.

Can anyone help me with this?

when I run

aplay -l

I get:

HDMI Audio Not Working

I have just switched over from DVI to HDMI on a new monitor. I would like to feed the audio out over HDMI. Currently I get no audio over HDMI. Is there a setting to enable this? I am running Debian Wheezy with XFCE.

An Open Question

Hey,

When you have decided to multi-boot several distros and have space to do so. Is there a preferred sequential order for those distros?

Let me see if I can make it even more confusing. I presently have two Linux distros on my PC, PClinuxOS and Manjaro 0.8.12 XFCE. My PCLOS was installed first then came Manjaro.

If I am able to install a third distro would I do it from when I am using Manjaro, or would it be better sequentially to do when I am using PCLinuxOS? Or does it not make a hill of Garbanzos which distro I happen to be using at the time of the third installation?

How does 'GRUB' feature in to this equation?

The Grub screen (I think it's called) shows 'Manjaro' at the top, then Manjaro Advanced. Then below it is, PCLinuxOS followed by PCLinuxOS Advanced. Last is the MEMTest.

Would this hypothetical third distro and there is no problem with installation or with 'GRUB', appear at the top of the list when booting into it?

"XXX.distro
XXX.distro advanced
manjaro
manjaro adcanced
pclos
pclos advanced
MemTest"

Just for elucidation the third Linux distro I am considering adding is; Ubuntu 15.04 Mate Edition.

Thanking All in Advance.

Can Ffmpeg, Mencoder, Handbrake Fix Fluctuating Audio Like VLC Can?

Hi

I have some video files where audio dialogue is low but action scenes are loud. I was searching the web on how I can fix this and I found this link http://lifehacker.com/5920290/how-to...en-really-loud

It is an excellent tutorial from lifehacker.

I was wondering if ffmpeg, mplayer/mencoder, handbrake or other commandline program can do the same of increasing the low audio dialogue while keeping the loud action scenes the same audio level? Thanks

Using Ffmpeg To Fade In Audio, BUT Original Audio From Video Is Gone

Hi

I am trying to fade in audio at 39 seconds into the video with existing audio.

It did work, the mp3 file fades in at 39 seconds, however the original audio from the video is silence or removed.

Here is the code I've use.

Code:
ffmpeg -i audio.mp3 -i test.mp4 -c:v copy -strict experimental -shortest -af 'afade=t=in:st=39' test.mp4

How can I fix this? Thanks

New Graphic Card Installed: The Sound Is Now Gone. How To Solve?

hello,
I installed an ATI card into my pc, now the sound is gone. I suppose this is due to the position of that new card which is now "0" (when I start alsamixer, I see the sound default is "HD-Audio Generic" with "Chip: ATI R6xx HDMI". I dont have a screen on the HDMI. I just want to take the "Intel ICH6" with "Chip: Analog Devices AD1981B" as the default card as per previous installation.

What should I do?

cat /proc/asound/cards
Code:
 0 [Generic ]: HDA-Intel - HD-Audio Generic
                      HD-Audio Generic at 0xf0620000 irq 42
 1 [ICH6 ]: ICH4 - Intel ICH6
                      Intel ICH6 with AD1981B at irq 21

Thanks.
