Stupid question, i know, but what is the correct path to run a script from root that is located in /home?

What Exactly Is PATH

books say that PATH variable contains the locations where the shell searches the commands to execute them.

I created a shell script and saved it in /home/user/Downloads directory and then i ran this script from the /home/user/Downloads directory. It did not execute.

however when i did set the path
export PATH=$PATH:/bin/sh within /home/user/Downloads directory, the shell script executed. Does it not mean that PATH variable is holding the locations of the shell program rather than the commands that are to be executed?

everytime i have to give the location of the shell i.e /bin/sh in the PATH variable no matter from where i am executing my script

Rsync Cronjob Question

hey guys, sorry for asking a dumb question, but some of the terminology online is not grasping me well, and still leaving me confused

in crontab -e

I have a shell script that contains

rsync /home/willc86 willc86@server02:/home/willc86/backup

the script works good by itself, however i have to put in a password which I understand. i know crontab works, because i used rsync script in the local machine. I am just having problems trying to sync it to another server

how do i get this rsync going in crontab to back it up to another server.

Is There A Way To Have A Script Called Source, That Can Be Run Without The Full Path?

Is there a way to have a script called source, that can be run without the full path?

Ex:
When I run:
export PATH=/home/user:$PATH
source

I get:
Code:
$ source
bash: source: filename argument required
source: usage: source filename [arguments]

However I want it to run my script called source:
Code:
$ cat source
#!/bin/bash
echo "Hello World"

Is there way to override a shell builtin in the PATH var or some other way?

How To Run A "sudo" Script Without Password

Hi all,
I have a script where every line needs to be prefixed with sudo.
I was advised to run it as $ sudo /path/to/file.sh

This script needs to be scheduled in crontab to run. If I run it as above, will I be prompted for a password?
Also, one of the lines in the script is;
scp -r root@rem_server:/source/dir /local/dir
Does that mean I will have to provide two passwords: one for sudo and one for root?

Thanks,

Rmdir -r

hi guys, im trying to get rid of a non empty directory. i have researched it online and it basically says that the command would be sudo rmdir -r filename
it keeps coming back with invalid option for r

what am i doing wrong?

the directory is in the home directory along with the documents, videos, download etc and i am in the home directory. i tried putting a text file there to make sure i am in the right path and it deleted it with rm so the path is correct.

i understand that i can do it with the gui but im trying to learn the terminal for the next forty years.

any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Bash Shell Scripting Need Help Figuring Out Process For Homework - JUST WANT DIRECTIO

Ok yes this is a homework assignment BUT I am NOT looking to have the answers given to me. I am in the 6th week of my first Linux class ever and we are in our few weeks of beginning scripting. I have some ideas of what to do or where to start but not many and no one to bounce any ideas off...we are using UNIX Bash shell so any others I have no clue. The scenario is that I need a script that searches all my users home directories for bad words. I need the script to report to the screen certain info like username and word found and path. It should ask a user if it is good or bad and if bad be put into a file of list of bad file names, if good remove from list and no longer flagged by the script. What I have so far is wanting to somehow do a loop. I do know that if I do a grep -r -e kill -e steal /home/* I get a list of what I need. I also know that the list is separated by delimiters which I can pipe to get a variable for the things I need. I also know that I can put it to a file with a > filename.txt

What I have no clue is how to start a loop that would do this...

for each line in filename.txt
UNAME=...
LOC=...
TXT=...
echo "Username: $UNAME, Line with bad word found: $TXT, and Path and file name: $LOC. Is this a BAD file? (Y)"
Read YORN

if ["$YORN" = "Y" ]; then
>> (line of text from grep) badfiles.txt
fi

Next or whatever goes there...sorry if this is crazy I just really need some direction. I am trying to learn so please don't give me the answer...that will do nothing for me and I will not be able to explain the code I came up with.

GloMoSim Installation In Linux Problem

hi everybody
I'm trying to install glomosim in fedora linux
I was following the guide to glomosim steps and I faced a problem in this step:

<< Now, you have to change some environmental parameters according to the destination folder which you put the Parsec.
You can create a file called “.bashrc” inside the root or home folder (if it does not already exist), and include the
following:
export PCC_DIRECTORY=/home/parsec
PATH=$PATH:$PCC_DIRECTORY/bin
export PATH
*Your PCC_DIRECTORY should be set to the targeted destination folder which you created earlier.
Now, type:
$ pcc >>

every time I tried to type pcc
this message appears : bash: pcc: command not found
anybody help me with this please

Rsync Script Problem

Hi all,

I am trying to write a script that syncs files from source to destination. I have one centralized server that can ssh to any servers without pw. Now when I run the script, it can ssh to source server perfectly fine, but you need to enter password for destination server. Was wondering how I can clean this up before I start using case statements

Below is a sample I wrote

#!/bin/bash

#This scripts syncs shit

echo "Type in ID: "
read ID

echo "Type in Server : " #source server
read S

echo "Type in Destination Server: "
read DS

if [ $S == 9 ]; then
ssh -t "root@"$S"webserver1" "rsync -av /home/rlui/"$ID "root@"$DS"webserver2:/home/rlui/";
ssh -t "root@"$S"webserver1" "rsync -av /home/rlui/tmp/"$ID "root@sl"$DS"webserver2:/home/rlui/tmp/"
exit 1

where S and DS are cluster numbers

I apologize in advance if I am not clear on anything

Automatically Starting A Python Script On Startup After Reboot...

I am running a headless Linux 17 media/NAS server. I have setup and tested the plexconnect script and it works. My only issue is that I can't figure out how to get the script to automatically run on startup. I tried using the GUI, but it doesn't seem to work.

To get it to work, I have to open terminal and navigate to the directory:

/usr/local/lib/PlexConnect/

Then run: sudo ./PlexConnect.py

The window has to remain open in order to keep running (which isn't an issue as it's headless). I'd just like to not have to login and start it each time the power goes out, or is rebooted.

I tried editing the crontab file and adding the following variations with no luck:
@reboot python /usr/local/lib/PlexConnect/PlexConnect.py
@reboot /usr/local/lib/PlexConnect/PlexConnect.py

Neither has worked. Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

Thanks!
